What a Passing Server Test Actually Proves After Deletion

A green test does not prove that the server you deleted was the one it contacted. Trace the dependency, request URL, listener identity, and assertion to find out what actually ran.

A test that still passes after you delete “the server” has not necessarily contacted that server at all. It may be using a mock, an in-memory test host, a test-managed container, or a different process that stayed alive. The way to find out is to trace the dependency and request the assertion actually used, then compare that target with the process or container you removed.

What a passing test actually proves

A green test proves that its assertion succeeded for the code and dependencies it exercised. It does not, by itself, prove that a separately launched production server was running. The phrase “the server” can refer to several different things: an external service, a test host inside the test process, a container started by the test framework, or a mock standing in for infrastructure.

For example, Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core integration testing guidance says unit tests can use “fabricated components, known as fakes or mock objects,” instead of infrastructure components. The same guidance describes test clients and an in-memory TestServer. In either case, removing a separately started server may not affect the test’s result.

Identify what the test used

Dependency in the test Who owns its lifecycle? What the assertion may observe What to check
Fake or mock Test setup or fixture A configured return value or behavior, rather than a network response Dependency registration and the object passed to the code under test
In-memory test host The test host or fixture A response from an application running within test infrastructure How the host and client are created, and the client’s base address
Test-managed container Test framework or container module A response from a container reached through a configured connection Container ID, mapped port, and final client URL
External service or separate process A separate process manager or service operator A response from whichever listener the client reached Request destination and the PID, node, or container listening there

Mocks and fakes

Follow the dependency from the test’s setup into the code being tested. If the request path resolves to a fake or mock, deleting another server is irrelevant unless the test also makes a real request to it. Check service registration, fixture setup, and the concrete dependency supplied to the code under test.

In-memory hosts

A test client can target a host created specifically for the test rather than a server launched separately. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core guidance describes this test-host approach and the use of TestServer. Inspect how the host is constructed and record the client’s base address; do not assume that a familiar port or server startup message identifies the target.

Containers and surviving processes

MockServer’s Testcontainers documentation describes modules that start the official container, wait for readiness, provide connection helpers, and stop the container automatically when the test run completes. That container can be separate from a process you removed manually. Compare the test’s configured URL and mapped port with the container ID and the process you deleted.

Frameworks can also manage more than one node or process. The Erlang/OTP version 17 test_server reference distinguishes independent peer nodes from slave nodes with a master relationship, and documents {cleanup, false} as an option that prevents the test server from killing a node that remains alive after a case. This is a specific example from that version of OTP, not a rule for all test frameworks.

Trace the test to the process it contacted

  1. Trace the assertion’s input. Read the test arrangement and follow the client or dependency used by the assertion. Establish whether it is a fake, an in-memory host, a container connection, or a separately managed service.
  2. Record the effective destination. Inspect or log the final request URL and port, along with relevant environment variables and service registration. Use the resolved runtime values, not just a default in a configuration file.
  3. Identify the listener. Immediately before the request, determine which PID, container ID, framework host, or node is listening on the destination port. Record that identity.
  4. Compare identities. Check whether the listener is the same process or container you deleted. Look for a second instance, a reused fixture, an in-memory host, or a port mapped by a container module.
  5. Inspect setup and teardown. Check fixture scope, startup hooks, and cleanup behavior to see what starts the dependency and what stops it. Framework-specific cleanup settings can leave a node alive, as the OTP example shows.
  6. Use a negative control. Make the intended endpoint unavailable, then run a test that must receive a real response from it. If the test still passes, either it does not depend on that service or its assertion does not observe the service failure.

Check what the assertion observes

A startup log line establishes that something reported starting; it does not establish that the test’s request reached the intended endpoint. Likewise, a mocked success, cached result, or assertion over an unrelated value can pass without showing that the server responded. Microsoft’s integration-testing guidance describes the assertion step as validating the actual response against an expected response. For a test meant to verify an external service, make the assertion depend on an observable response from that service and verify that taking the service away makes the test fail.
