A museum-material test pass means only that the tested sample did not show the specified effect under the method’s stated conditions. It is not a universal certificate that a material is compatible with every collection object, and it does not establish that the material is harmless to people. To interpret a result, check what was tested, what the method measures, and how the material will actually be used.
What does a test result actually say?
A laboratory result is bounded by its target, sample, method and test conditions. A pass can support a decision about that defined test; it cannot automatically answer broader questions about every substance in a material, every object it may contact, or every route of human exposure.

The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that “a passing score from a standardized test may not guarantee that the material is completely harmless.” In practical terms, interpret a pass as evidence about the tested sample and effect—not as an all-purpose safety label. What an Oddy test can—and cannot—show
What the test screens for
The Oddy test is an accelerated corrosion screen used for materials intended for museum contexts. It exposes metal coupons to emissions from a sample and assesses the coupons after aging. The Swedish National Heritage Board describes a setup in which the sample, water and coupons of copper, silver and lead are sealed in a tube, held at 60°C for 28 days with elevated humidity, and then assessed visually. Its categories are Pass (no effect), Temporary (minor effect) and Fail (major effect). Laboratories may use protocol variants, so check the method actually used for a particular result. What it does not identify
An Oddy result is qualitative: it records an observed effect on the specified metals. By itself, it does not identify which substance caused corrosion or how much of it was present. If cause or concentration matters, additional analytical methods are needed. Nor does a result on copper, silver and lead establish compatibility with other materials or surfaces, such as paper, photographs, plastics, coatings or an object’s finish.
The Swedish National Heritage Board puts the contextual limitation plainly: “The result of the test must always be interpreted in light of how the material is intended to be used.” A material’s proximity, contact, enclosure, duration of use and the sensitivity of the particular object all matter.

Does a negative contaminant result mean an item is hazard-free?
No. A negative result means the test did not detect its target in the tested sample under the protocol used. It does not prove that all hazardous substances are absent. The U.S. Department of the Interior explains that tests may target commonly used preservation chemicals rather than every possible chemical, and a substance can be present below the method’s limit of detection. Sampling also covers only the material actually submitted, not necessarily an entire heterogeneous object. The department’s FAQ, last revised February 13, 2006, is useful for these interpretation cautions, not as current regulatory advice. U.S. Department of the Interior FAQ on testing museum objects
“Safe” is relative to the question being asked. A test intended to detect a contaminant or screen for corrosion does not, by itself, measure every possible health risk from handling, inhalation or other exposure. Collection compatibility and worker health are separate questions; a result addressing one should not be presented as proof about the other.

How to judge whether a result applies to your use
Before relying on a report, check the following:
- Target: Which effect or substance did the method assess—corrosion, a particular contaminant, or something else?
- Sample and coverage: What material was sampled, how representative is it, and what could the sampling or method miss?
- Conditions and duration: What temperature, humidity, exposure arrangement and incubation period were used?
- Outcome type: Is the result a visual, qualitative screen or an instrument-derived measurement? Does it report a detection limit?
- Object compatibility: Which metals, papers, photographs, plastics, coatings or surfaces are relevant to the actual object?
- Use context: Will the material touch the object, sit inside an enclosure, be nearby in open space, or be used temporarily or long-term?
- Human exposure: Is the decision about collection damage, staff exposure, or both? What separate assessment addresses each?
- Next step: Does the test merely show an effect, or can it establish the cause and amount? If those details matter, ask whether further analysis is needed.
For testing options, the Canadian Conservation Institute describes a range from simple screens—including pH strips with glycerol, A-D strips and lead acetate tests—to intermediate methods such as Oddy testing and photographic activity testing, and specialized laboratory measurements. Its guidance says Oddy and photographic activity tests require four weeks of incubation. That is a pathway to discuss with conservation expertise, not a universal protocol for every material or hazard. Canadian Conservation Institute testing overview

When a result affects collection handling or worker safety, consult a qualified conservator or conservation scientist and, for exposure questions, an industrial hygienist. The Department of the Interior FAQ specifically recommends expert input when risk interpretation is needed or a laboratory is unfamiliar with museum-object samples. Follow your institution’s current safety procedures; do not treat an old FAQ as a substitute for current institutional or regulatory guidance.
