What a Google Home Factory Reset Erases—and What It Doesn’t

A Google Home or Nest factory reset clears device data and disconnects it from home members, but it is not the same as deleting Google Account activity.

A factory reset clears data from a Google Home or Nest speaker or display, returns it to factory settings, and disconnects it from everyone in the home. Google says associated device data—such as video history—is deleted, but some basic device data may remain connected to the home. A reset cannot be undone, and it does not by itself promise to erase your Google Account activity or every record in Google’s privacy controls.

What a factory reset removes

Google describes a factory reset as clearing data from the speaker or display and returning it to its default settings. It also disconnects the device from all members of the home. Google says data associated with the device, including video history, is deleted. Google’s reset instructions do not list every category of device data removed.

Google also cautions that some basic device data may remain connected to the home. Its help page does not identify every field covered by that exception, so it is not possible to say from that guidance exactly what may remain.

What a factory reset does not necessarily erase

Resetting the hardware is different from deleting your Google Account or managing activity saved to it. The reset instructions do not say that a reset clears all Google Home search history, voice recordings, or Google Assistant interactions. Google provides separate controls for Google Home search history and voice recordings and for Google Assistant activity.

  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.

  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Google says Assistant audio recordings are not retained on its servers by default, though users can opt to save audio. Assistant interactions can be reviewed or deleted through Assistant activity controls. Check those account-level controls separately if your goal is to manage saved activity; resetting the speaker or display is not a substitute.

Review these data before resetting specific devices

  • Nest Hub Max: Save any footage you want to keep from device video history and remove the Hub Max from the Google Home app before resetting.
  • Nest Hub (2nd gen): Review Sleep Sensing data before resetting. Google links to separate steps for turning Sleep Sensing off and deleting sleep data; its reset instructions do not say that the reset alone removes all Sleep Sensing records.

Reset, reboot, or change Wi-Fi?

Choose the least destructive action that solves the problem. Google says rebooting is distinct from factory reset: it restarts the device rather than returning it to factory defaults. For Wi-Fi changes, Google recommends trying the app’s network options before resetting.

Action Use it for Data and reversibility
Reboot Restarting a device that needs a fresh start. Not a factory reset. Google documents unplugging the device for one minute and plugging it back in, or rebooting through the Google Home app. Google’s reboot instructions.
Change Wi-Fi Moving the device to a different network. Try forgetting the current network in the Google Home app, then add or set up the device on the new network. A reset may be needed if those steps fail, the app cannot forget the network, or Google’s listed setup or network errors occur. Google’s Wi-Fi guidance.
Factory reset Returning the device to default settings, for example before setting it up again. Clears data from the device, disconnects it from home members, and cannot be undone. It is not a general deletion control for Google Account activity. Google’s reset instructions.

How to reset a Google Home or Nest speaker or display

The physical reset control depends on the model. Google says these speakers and displays cannot be factory reset by voice or through the Google Home app. Its current instructions include holding both rear volume buttons on Nest Hub displays for about 10 seconds; model-specific touch controls on Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen) after switching off the microphone; and a reset button on the base of the first-generation Google Home Mini.

  1. Identify the exact model. Check Google’s model-by-model reset instructions and follow the steps for your device; controls differ across products.
  2. Review device-specific data first. For a Nest Hub Max, save wanted video clips and remove the device from the Google Home app. For a Nest Hub (2nd gen), review Sleep Sensing data and use its separate controls if you want to turn the feature off or delete sleep data.
  3. Use the physical control specified for that model. For example, Google’s instructions say to hold both rear volume buttons on a Nest Hub display for about 10 seconds. Do not assume another model uses the same buttons or timing.
  4. Set the device up again if you still want to use it. A factory reset returns it to default settings and disconnects it from household members, so expect to configure it again.

Google’s documentation states: “This action clears your data from the device and can’t be undone.”

  • Save Nest Hub Max footage you want to keep and review Nest Hub (2nd gen) Sleep Sensing data before resetting.
  • If you also want to manage search history, saved audio, or Assistant interactions, review the separate Google Account activity controls.
