A four-day workweek can mean fewer total hours, or it can mean fitting a standard 40-hour week into four longer days. The label alone does not determine your pay, workload, or overtime rights: check the written schedule, actual hours worked, your worker classification, and the rules where you work.
First, find out which kind of four-day week you have
Two arrangements can both be called a four-day workweek while producing different results.

When comparing a job offer or workplace policy, look beyond the number of workdays. Check weekly hours, daily shift length, whether pay is protected, output targets, expected availability, overtime treatment, leave and holiday rules, coverage arrangements, and the employer’s definition of its workweek.

Does a four-day week mean the same pay?
No. Pay depends on the employer’s agreement with you and applicable law, not on the phrase “four-day workweek.” Some reduced-hours pilots have kept pay unchanged, but that does not establish what an individual employer will do. Ask whether your guaranteed weekly or annual compensation changes, and get the answer in writing.

Also clarify whether the arrangement changes your hourly rate, your scheduled hours, or both. If you are hourly, confirm how scheduled and extra hours are paid. If you are salaried, do not assume the salary determines whether overtime is due; classification and exemption rules matter.
How U.S. federal overtime works
This section describes the general U.S. federal rule, not a determination for every worker. The U.S. Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act generally requires covered, nonexempt employees to receive at least one-and-one-half times their regular rate after 40 hours of work in a workweek. The Department’s overtime overview notes that state law may set a higher standard; when federal and state rules both apply, the higher standard governs.

The workweek matters, not just the schedule
Under federal rules, a workweek is a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours. It does not have to begin on Monday or match the calendar week. Overtime is calculated separately for each workweek; an employer generally cannot average hours across two or more weeks to avoid the threshold. The Department of Labor’s overtime pay guidance also explains that working Saturday, Sunday, a holiday, or a regular rest day does not by itself require federal overtime if the weekly overtime threshold is not crossed.

Four 10-hour days total 40 hours. Under the general federal rule, a covered nonexempt employee does not earn federal overtime solely because a shift lasted 10 hours if total hours stay at 40 or less for that workweek. But state daily-overtime rules can change the calculation, and special rules or a valid alternative work schedule may apply in some settings. Check the law for your location rather than treating the federal weekly threshold as the only rule.

A salary does not automatically remove overtime rights
A fixed salary alone does not make an employee exempt from overtime. The Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #23, revised October 2019, explains that overtime for a nonexempt employee can depend on total includable compensation and actual hours. A salary intended to cover a workweek longer than 40 hours does not by itself discharge statutory overtime obligations, and employees cannot waive those obligations by agreement. Whether a particular worker is covered or exempt depends on the applicable rules and the actual arrangement.
State and local law, occupation-specific provisions, public-sector rules, collective bargaining terms, and exemption status can all affect a specific case. Identify your work location and the employer’s fixed workweek before relying on a threshold or estimating overtime pay.

Does the workload actually get lighter?
Fewer scheduled hours do not necessarily mean less work. An employer might remove low-value tasks, shorten or reduce meetings, change priorities, add staffing, or reset output targets. Alternatively, it might expect the same volume in less time, making each workday more intense. Ask what changes to tasks, staffing, deadlines, output measures, and after-hours availability accompany the schedule.
Reported pilot results offer examples, not a forecast for every workplace. In a 2023 announcement about its six-month UK pilot, 4 Day Week Global said more than 60 companies and nearly 3,000 workers participated with no loss of pay. The organizer reported that 91% of participating organizations definitely continued or planned to continue, with another 4% leaning toward continuing. It also reported revenue 35% higher than in comparable periods in the previous year and improvements in measures including stress, burnout, fatigue, sleep, and life and job satisfaction. These are outcomes reported for the participating pilot organizations and workers, not proof that every employer will get the same results. Read the UK pilot results announcement.

Professor Juliet Schor of Boston College, identified in the announcement as the pilot’s lead researcher, said: “Results are largely steady across workplaces of varying sizes, demonstrating that this is an innovation which works for many types of organisations.” That is her interpretation of the trial, not a guarantee about a different employer.
In a separate 2023 summary of a long-term U.S./Canada pilot, 4 Day Week Global reported a 15% increase in revenue over the trial and a 69% reduction in employee burnout. Those organization-reported metrics come from a different pilot and should not be treated as directly comparable with the UK figures or as typical results. Read the U.S./Canada pilot summary.
What to confirm before you agree
- Hours: Is this a reduced-hours schedule or 40 hours compressed into four days? What are the daily start and finish times?
- Pay: What compensation is guaranteed, and will it change? How are additional hours paid?
- Workload: Which tasks, goals, deadlines, or meetings will change? Is the same output expected in less time?
- Availability: Are you expected to respond or work on the nominal day off? How are customer, team, or service needs covered?
- Overtime rules: Are you covered and nonexempt, what fixed workweek does the employer use, and do state or local rules include daily overtime?
- Time off: How are holidays, paid leave, and other absences counted when your regular days or hours change?
For a personal overtime or pay question, compare your time records and written terms with the rules for your location. A schedule’s name is not a substitute for those details.
