Those are materially different arrangements: one reduces working time; the other changes when the same hours are worked. In practice, the schedule only works if an employer also plans for coverage, workload, handoffs and how it will judge whether the change is successful.
What “four-day workweek” can mean
The label describes a schedule, not a single standard. Before evaluating a proposal, ask how many hours employees will work, whether pay changes, and whether the workplace will operate all five weekdays.

| Arrangement | Weekly hours | Pay | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduced-hours week | Fewer hours than before; 32 hours is one possible arrangement, not a universal definition | May remain at the same level | Working time is reduced, so the employer must decide how to maintain essential work and service levels. |
| Compressed week | The usual full-time hours are worked across four days | Usually tied to the same full-time arrangement | Each working day is longer. The total weekly hours have not necessarily fallen. |
| 100:80:100 model | 80% of previous working time | 100% of pay | The aim is to maintain 100% of output despite reduced time. This is a target for a trial, not a guaranteed result. |
The Associated Press describes both the 100:80:100 approach and alternatives including four 10-hour shifts or shorter weekly schedules. That distinction matters when comparing results: evidence about a reduced-hours trial cannot automatically be applied to a compressed schedule.
What the 100:80:100 model asks of a workplace
In the 100:80:100 framework promoted by 4 Day Week Global, employees receive 100% of pay, work 80% of their former time, and commit to maintaining 100% of output. The figures describe the model’s intended bargain. They do not establish that every role, team or business can produce the same amount in less time.

Moving from five days to four without losing pay therefore is not simply a matter of deleting a day from the calendar. An employer needs to identify which work matters, which activities consume time without contributing enough value, and what standards must continue. The relevant outcomes could differ by role: completed work, response times, service quality or another agreed measure. The measures should reflect the actual job rather than rely on time spent at a desk as a substitute for results.
Dale Whelehan, CEO of 4 Day Week Global, described that change in emphasis in an Associated Press interview: “The fundamental change we see is, let’s move away from thinking about productivity as how much time it takes to get something done, versus focusing on what outcomes we know drive businesses forward.” This is the perspective of a leader of an organization that supports the model, rather than a neutral finding that every employer will get more output from fewer hours.
How employers can prepare a practical trial
A useful trial starts with the operating requirements, not with selecting a day off. The employer should first specify what must remain available, what work is essential, and how it will know whether the new arrangement is workable. It can then redesign the schedule and workflow around those requirements.
1. Map essential work and service commitments
List the work that has to be completed and any service commitments that must continue throughout the week. For customer-facing or coverage-dependent work, identify expected response times, opening hours, handoffs and minimum staffing. A team that can pause internal work on a common day off has different scheduling constraints from a service that needs people available every weekday.

This exercise should distinguish work that truly must happen on a particular day from work that is simply scheduled there by habit. It should also identify dependencies: if one person’s output is needed before another can proceed, changing either person’s day off may delay the whole process.
2. Find work that can be removed or simplified
Review recurring meetings, duplicated data entry, repeated approvals, unnecessary reporting and avoidable interruptions. The goal is not to make employees perform the same volume at a higher pace by default. It is to examine whether the work can be reorganized so that the most important outcomes receive time and attention.
For each proposed change, decide who owns it and how the team will know it has worked. A meeting can be shortened or removed only if decisions and coordination still happen. An approval step can be simplified only if accountability remains clear. Otherwise, apparent time savings may return as delays, errors or unrecorded work elsewhere.

3. Choose a schedule that matches coverage needs
A workplace may give the whole team the same day off, stagger days off to keep coverage, or use another pattern. There is no single best arrangement established by the available sources. The right choice depends on work requirements and on the effects of the schedule on employees.

A shared day off makes the boundary easy to understand, but can leave customers or other teams without support that day. Staggered leave can preserve weekday coverage, but needs explicit ownership for handoffs and decisions; it can also mean employees do not share the same long weekend. A schedule with longer days preserves more weekly hours when compressed, but employees and managers should consider whether those longer shifts suit the work and the people doing it.
4. Set measures before the trial begins
Agree on a small set of measures that can reveal both business performance and the experience of employees. Depending on the role, these could include output, service quality, customer response times, overtime, absence, retention, workload and wellbeing. These are possible evaluation dimensions, not a claim that any one cited trial measured all of them.
Record a baseline before changing schedules, define what counts as a meaningful change, and specify when the measures will be reviewed. If output appears stable but overtime rises, for example, the arrangement may be relying on hidden extra work rather than genuinely reducing working time. If customer responses slow, the problem may be coverage or a handoff rather than the four-day schedule as a whole. A trial is more informative when its measures can help identify which part needs adjustment.
5. Address fairness, autonomy and workload
Employees should understand how days off are assigned, what happens when coverage is difficult, and whether some roles are excluded. If only some people can take a particular day, the employer should make the rules transparent and consider how the burden of coverage is distributed.

Autonomy also needs a clear boundary. Employees may have flexibility in when they complete work, but a nominal day off is not a real reduction in working time if messages, urgent tasks or routine meetings routinely pull them back in. Agree on expectations for availability and escalation, and specify who handles genuine exceptions. UK Research and Innovation says research into the UK pilot examined implementation, fairness, inclusion and job security, reinforcing that a schedule change is also an organizational-design question.

Portugal: organizer-reported pilot results
4 Day Week Global’s 2024 Portugal pilot results page says the study included 41 companies, with 21 coordinating the start of a six-month trial in June 2023. The organization reported that work exhaustion fell by 19% and that the share reporting challenges maintaining work-life balance decreased from 46% to 8%. These are findings reported by the pilot’s organizer for that setting, not universal effects of adopting a four-day week.

An Australian Parliament Senate report says 86% of employers in a cited trial were likely to continue with a four-day week after the trial. “Likely to continue” records reported intention; it is not the same as observing that 86% actually continued, and it is not a continuation rate for all workplaces.

The Parliament’s 2026 research briefing summarizes policy and trial developments and flags equity and implementation questions for future research. Those questions matter when considering whether an arrangement that appears successful for one group or employer can be applied fairly across different roles.
UK small-business interviews: a limited source type
A 2025 conference abstract reports interviews with stakeholders at 20 UK small and medium-sized enterprises about how the fifth day is used and the relationship between autonomy and control. Because this is an abstract, it should be treated as a report of a focused interview study, not as a complete evaluation of four-day-week outcomes across the UK.
Keep unrelated employment findings separate
The UK Department for Work and Pensions has reported results from a health-led employment trial, including improved job-search confidence and small positive health and wellbeing effects four months after randomisation. That was not a four-day-workweek trial, so those findings do not establish what happens when employers reduce or compress working time.
How to assess a proposal as an employee
Do not rely on the name of the policy. Ask for the terms that determine what the change will mean in your job, and check whether they are written down clearly enough to follow.
- Total hours: How many hours are expected each week, and are breaks included in the stated shift length?
- Pay and status: Does pay remain unchanged, and does the arrangement alter any other employment terms?
- Days and availability: Is the day off fixed, rotating or individually chosen? Are employees expected to monitor messages or respond to routine requests on that day?
- Workload: Which activities will be reduced, stopped or redesigned so that work does not simply spill into evenings or the day off?
- Coverage: Who handles customers, urgent issues and handoffs when teammates are not working?
- Fairness: Which roles can participate, how are less flexible roles treated, and how are less popular shifts allocated?
- Evaluation: What will be measured, when will the trial be reviewed, and how can employees raise problems?
These questions help distinguish a genuine reduction in work time from compressed hours or an informal expectation to do a full week’s work in less time. They also reveal whether the employer has planned for the people and services affected by the schedule, rather than treating the calendar change as the whole policy.
Compare schedules on more than the weekday off
Two four-day arrangements can feel very different even when both provide one weekday away from work. A more useful comparison considers the total hours, compensation, coverage, workload, employee control and service outcomes together. For an employer, a schedule that preserves coverage may still be a poor fit if it creates unsustainable workload; for an employee, a shorter week may not deliver the intended benefit if availability expectations extend into the day off.
When reviewing a trial or job offer, separate what is promised from what is being tested. Pay terms and scheduled hours can be specified in advance. Whether output and service quality remain steady, whether workload is manageable, and whether employees find the arrangement fair are questions that need to be assessed in the workplace itself.
