A flash memory disk is a storage device that saves data in flash memory, a type of semiconductor memory that retains information without power. The phrase often means a USB flash drive, but it can also describe flash-based products such as memory cards and solid-state drives (SSDs). Flash memory is the technology inside; the drive or card is the product that makes it usable.
What “flash memory disk” means
“Nonvolatile” means data remains stored when a device loses power. That distinguishes flash memory from volatile memory such as DRAM, which needs power to retain its contents. Samsung Semiconductor defines flash memory as “a semiconductor that preserves data even when the power is off” in its Flash Memory glossary.

The word “disk” can be misleading: a flash memory disk does not have to contain a physical, spinning disk. An SSD stores data in semiconductor memory and has no mechanical disk mechanism. Western Digital’s flash-management white paper discusses flash-based storage, but no URL was published for the white paper.
Which devices use flash memory?

NAND and NOR: two flash architectures
“Flash memory” does not specify one architecture. NAND is widely used for storage, including USB drives, memory cards, and SSDs. NOR supports random-access reading and is suited to code and firmware use. Microchip explains that NAND cells are connected in series and data is read in pages, while NOR allows random-access reading and can be used to execute program code directly from memory. The architectures serve different jobs, so the word “flash” alone does not tell you a product’s performance or intended use.

What SLC, MLC, and TLC mean
These labels describe how many bits a NAND cell stores, not a complete performance rating:

- SLC: one bit per cell.
- MLC: two bits per cell.
- TLC: three bits per cell.
Samsung gives these definitions in its NAND overview. Cell type is one factor affecting a product’s characteristics, but it is not enough to establish a particular drive’s speed, service life, or warranty. Check the product’s own specifications for those details.

How to choose the right kind of flash storage
Start with the device you need to use and what it supports. Then compare the specifications that matter for that use:
- Form factor and compatibility: Confirm that the computer, camera, or other device accepts the drive or card.
- Capacity: Choose enough space for the files you plan to store.
- Interface and performance: Check the product’s stated connection type and performance claims against your device and workload.
- Endurance and warranty: Review the maker’s product-specific information rather than inferring longevity from an SLC, MLC, or TLC label.
The cited sources establish these product categories and technical distinctions, but do not establish current model specifications or prices.
