A Dell factory reset can erase all personal files on the computer—but the exact result depends on which reset you choose. Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery option, Reset to factory settings, deletes hard-drive data and returns the operating system and software to their shipped state. Windows 11’s separate Reset this PC option can keep personal files if you choose Keep my files, but it removes apps and resets settings. Identify the reset screen before proceeding, and back up important files first.
First identify which reset you are using
“Factory reset” is often used loosely. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery and Windows 11’s Reset this PC are different workflows with different outcomes. Dell explicitly says Windows 11’s Reset this PC is not a Dell factory-image reset. Check the wording on your screen and the choices your model offers before you start.

Dell recommends backing up data before refreshing or resetting Windows. Its Windows 11 reset instructions state: “Before you attempt a refresh or reset of your operating system (OS), Dell Technologies recommends that you back up your data.”

| Reset option | Personal files | Apps, drivers and settings | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| SupportAssist OS Recovery: Reset to factory settings | Deleted. Dell warns that all data on the hard drive, including personal files, is erased. | User-installed programs and drivers are uninstalled. | Restores the operating system and software to the shipped factory state. Licensed software may require product or license keys again. |
| Windows 11: Reset this PC > Keep my files | Kept. | User-installed apps and drivers are removed, and settings are reset. | Manufacturer-preinstalled apps may be restored depending on the Preinstalled apps setting. This is not a Dell factory-image reset. |
| Windows 11: Reset this PC > Remove everything | Deleted. | Installed apps, drivers and settings changes are removed. Dell says its Windows reinstall also removes Dell-installed apps, with some tablet exceptions/configurations. | Choose “Just remove my files” when keeping the PC, or “Remove files and clean the drive” when recycling it. Dell does not describe the latter as a guarantee of forensic erasure. |
| SupportAssist OS Recovery: Reset and update | Deleted; use the separate backup step if you need files later. | User-installed programs and drivers are removed. | Installs the latest OS and critical drivers/apps available through that route rather than restoring the exact shipped software image. Available only on some supported systems. |

What “keeps” means for your files
SupportAssist factory settings does not keep local files
A factory-state reset restores the shipped software baseline, not your personal setup. Documents, photos, downloads and other local data are deleted. Dell’s reset flow has a separate backup option: select files and folders, copy them to a USB flash drive or external drive with available space greater than the selected backup size, complete the reset, then restore the backup. Dell’s SupportAssist recovery instructions describe this backup flow and warn that apps not originally installed on the computer must be reinstalled.
Windows Keep my files preserves personal files, not your configuration
This Windows option keeps personal files while removing user-installed apps and drivers and resetting settings. Dell documents a separate Preinstalled apps setting that affects whether manufacturer apps are reinstalled. Back up important files even when choosing this option, as Dell recommends before any reset.

What to prepare before resetting
- Back up important documents, photos and other files to storage separate from the computer. For SupportAssist backup, make sure the destination has more available space than the selected files require.
- Make a list of apps you installed yourself and ensure you can reinstall them afterward.
- Find product or license keys and account access for paid software. Dell notes that licensed programs such as Microsoft Office 365 may ask for keys after a SupportAssist factory reset.
- Read the final confirmation screen carefully. SupportAssist warns that system data and personal files will be deleted before you confirm.
Dell’s SupportAssist guidance explains the reset and license-key implications.
Why your Dell may show different recovery choices
SupportAssist OS Recovery availability and options depend on the model and system condition. Dell says SupportAssist OS Recovery is not supported on Dell computers with Qualcomm processors. In some cases—such as an irreparable system or when the factory operating system is not detected—only Reset and update may be offered. Check Dell’s recovery overview and your computer’s on-screen options rather than assuming every Dell has the same menu.
