A column type is a contract. It ties the value in your row model to everything the grid will do with that value: show it, edit it, sort it, filter it, group it, and export it. A type that is only a label such as “number” or “date” fails on technical data, where precision, units, nullability and time semantics decide whether a sort order or a filter is correct. This article lays out what that contract should contain. It draws on how AG Grid, MUI X Data Grid and TanStack Table document their column models, and it treats those APIs as examples, not as a universal design.
What a column type has to know
A column type needs three things:
- Identity and access path. How to find or derive the value from a row.
- Semantic type and shape. Whether the value is a primitive, a calendar date, an instant, an enum, a nullable measurement or a structured object.
- Type-appropriate operations. The comparison, filter operators, editor, parser, formatter and export behavior that make sense for that meaning.
The major libraries converge on this. AG Grid’s cell data types are described as letting different grid features work without extra configuration, including rendering, editing, filtering, sorting, row grouping and import and export (CSV, Excel, clipboard). MUI’s column definitions expose a type alongside getters, formatters, renderers, sort comparators and filter operators. TanStack’s v8 columns guide splits columns into accessor columns, which have an underlying data model for sorting, filtering and grouping, and display columns, which hold arbitrary presentation such as action buttons or checkboxes.
A value pipeline: get, operate, format, render
The most useful way to keep a column type honest is to separate four stages and never let a later stage leak back into an earlier one.
- Get. Read the raw field or derive a typed value from the row.
- Operate. Sort, filter, group and aggregate on that typed value.
- Format. Turn the value into text for people.
- Render. Produce the actual UI, which may be more than text.
MUI states the boundary explicitly: the value returned by valueFormatter is only used for rendering. Sorting and filtering work on the raw row value or on the result of valueGetter. Its renderer can return a React node, so formatting to text and rendering a component are separate steps as well.

For technical data this matters immediately. A reading shown as “1.2 kΩ” must still sort as 1200 ohms, not as a string beginning with “1.2”. If your formatter is the only place the unit knowledge lives, your sort and filter will be wrong. Put the canonical representation in the getter or the stored value, and let the formatter be a pure display function.
Editing: parse in, format out
Editing is the reverse of display. The column type has to define how typed text becomes the stored value (a parser) and how the stored value is shown again (a formatter). AG Grid’s built-in data types supply parsers and formatters, and its object type requires a value formatter and, when editing is enabled, a parser, because correct behavior depends on the object’s structure.

For a technical grid, the following should be explicit parts of the type instead of silent string conversions. These are design recommendations that follow from the parser and formatter responsibilities above, not documented behavior of any particular library:
- Invalid input. Decide whether it is rejected, flagged or stored as-is, and where the message appears.
- Empty values. Distinguish null, empty string and zero, and decide how each sorts and filters.
- Precision. State how many significant digits survive a round trip through the editor.
- Units. Decide whether units live in the column, in each cell, or in a separate field, and whether the parser accepts user-typed suffixes.
The right choices depend on your domain, so these defaults are yours to set per column type.

What “date” means to a grid
A name alone does not carry semantics. In AG Grid’s documentation, the date type compares complete Date objects, including the time. If values are not at midnight, built-in filtering and editing can behave unexpectedly. The advice is to normalize times so the built-in filters behave consistently, or, if time matters, to use dateTime or a custom comparator (see the cell data types page).
The lesson generalizes. Decide whether the column is a calendar date (a day, with no time or zone) or an instant (a point on a timeline), and make comparison, filtering and editing follow from that choice. Timestamps from instruments, logs or measurement runs are almost always instants. A “calibration due” field is usually a calendar date. Giving them one type invites off-by-a-day filter results.

Structured values need their own contract
Objects, ranges, value-with-unit pairs and tolerances cannot be handled by default string rendering. MUI’s built-in types expect particular value shapes, and AG Grid asks custom object values to define formatting and, for editing, parsing. For a structured value, the type should answer these questions:
- What single comparable key does sorting use?
- Which operators does filtering offer, and on which part of the structure?
- How does the value appear in text, in the editor and in exports?
- How is it rebuilt from user input?
Renderers, virtualization and state
Rich renderers are tempting for technical data: sparklines, status chips, unit pickers. Treat them as disposable. MUI notes that, because of pagination and virtualization, cells can be unmounted when scrolling or switching pages, which destroys local component state. Anything that must persist, such as an expanded state or an unsaved draft, belongs in grid state or parent state, not inside the renderer.

Scale has a second effect. TanStack’s virtualization guide says virtualized columns use the current visible-column list, and that virtualized rows and columns should be recomputed as relevant table state changes. A column type that caches layout or measurements per cell should expect them to be invalidated when columns are hidden, reordered or resized.
Accessibility belongs in the type
MUI advises that cell content should not be in the tab sequence unless its cell has focus, so a row of interactive renderers does not turn into a wall of tab stops. It also lets row-identifying cells use rowHeader so screen readers receive the row-header role. For a technical grid, the identifier column (part number, sensor ID, run name) is the natural candidate. Decide this per column type instead of retrofitting it later.
Accessor columns versus display columns
In a headless library such as TanStack Table, you supply the data model and operations while owning the markup. The conceptual split still applies to any grid: a data-bearing column has an access path and a type with operations, while a display-only column, such as row actions or a selection checkbox, has neither and should not pretend to. Mixing them leads to action columns appearing in sort menus and exports.
A checklist for a new column type
| Axis | Question the type must answer |
|---|---|
| Data semantics | Primitive, calendar date, instant, enum, nullable measurement or structured object? |
| Value pipeline | What is the raw or accessor value, the parser, the canonical stored form, the formatter and the renderer? |
| Operations | Which comparator, filter operators, editor, validation, grouping or aggregation and export format apply? |
| State and scale | Where does persistent state live, what happens on unmount, and is processing in the browser or on a server? |
| Interaction | How do keyboard focus, row-header semantics, truncation and edit affordances work? |
Two caveats apply. The documentation reviewed here does not publish performance or dataset-scale figures, so none are claimed. And units, precision, null handling and server-side behavior depend on your domain, so they are decisions to make deliberately, not defaults to copy from a library.
