A CD/DVD label printer puts text or graphics on the non-recording, label side of an optical disc. It can do that by printing directly onto a specially coated disc or by printing a separate adhesive label for you to apply. The right method depends on your printer, disc media, software and how many discs you need to label.
What is a CD/DVD label printer?
The term describes equipment or a workflow used to label CDs, DVDs and, in some systems, Blu-ray discs. A supported home or office inkjet may print one disc at a time; dedicated disc-publishing systems can handle more automated work. A label printer does not print data onto the disc’s recording surface: it prints on the label side.

Direct printing requires a disc made with a printable surface compatible with the printer. Canon explains that a “printable disc” has a label surface specially processed for inkjet printing: Canon’s explanation of printable discs.

| Method | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct disc printing | The printer applies ink to the disc’s compatible printable surface. | Printer support, disc coating, tray or adapter, software and media settings. |
| Printed adhesive label | The printer prints a separate label sheet, which is then attached to the disc. | Whether the printer supports the label sheet and the sheet’s compatibility with the disc and application method. |
Brother documents both printing directly on printable discs and printing a label sheet to apply: Brother’s disc-label instructions. Check the instructions for the exact printer and media; the two methods are not interchangeable in their requirements.

What determines compatibility?
- Printer model: Direct disc printing is available only on supported models. A compatible disc-printing tray or adapter may be required.
- Disc surface: For direct inkjet printing, use a disc with a printable surface specified for inkjet use. Ink on an incompatible disc may not dry properly.
- Loading procedure: Tray insertion varies by model. Canon’s instructions say to wait for the printer’s prompt before loading its disc or multipurpose tray; loading early can damage the printer. Its older model-specific guidance also calls for the supplied CD-R tray. Consult your own model’s manual rather than treating those directions as universal: Canon’s current disc-label procedure and Canon’s model-specific media and tray guidance.
- Software and operating system: Confirm that the printer supports the design software and operating environment you plan to use. Software support can vary by model and change over time.
How does the software fit into the process?
Design software lets you create and format the label; the printer and media settings determine how that design is produced. Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint Editor guide describes selecting a disc-label project, choosing a template, editing it and printing with the appropriate media and tray settings: Canon Easy-PhotoPrint Editor instructions. Microtech describes DiscPrint as software for disc labels that supports inkjet, thermal and thermal retransfer printing: Microtech DiscPrint product information. These are vendor-described examples, not evidence that either option works with every printer; verify the software and operating-system requirements for your specific setup.

| Setup | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Supported home or office inkjet with a disc tray | Occasional personal or small-office labeling, especially when color graphics are useful. | Requires a supported printer, compatible printable discs and any model-specific tray or adapter. |
| Adhesive label sheets | A separate printed label is preferable to direct printing, provided the printer and labels are compatible. | Involves applying the printed label, so follow the sheet and disc manufacturers’ directions. |
| Dedicated or automated disc system | Higher-volume or repeatable disc-publishing workflows. | Equipment and workflow are designed for production needs and should not be assumed suitable for every household. |

What to check before printing
- Look up your printer model’s manual to confirm that it supports disc printing and identify the correct tray or adapter.
- Choose media whose printable surface matches the printer’s supported disc-printing method.
- Check the supported design software, operating system and print settings for that model.
- Follow the manual’s loading prompts and media instructions; do not assume another model’s procedure applies.
