It cannot identify an address’s owner, prove who controls its keys, or explain why a payment was made unless information from outside the blockchain connects those records to a person or purpose.
What can you look up in a Bitcoin block explorer?
Explorers provide a searchable view of Bitcoin’s public ledger. The exact layout and fields vary by service, but a lookup commonly starts with a transaction ID, address, or block.

Transaction ID
A transaction ID, often called a TXID, opens a record of a particular transaction. Depending on the explorer, the page can show its inputs and outputs, destination addresses, amounts, fee, and whether it has been included in a block. Bitcoin.com Support describes these fields and the transaction’s confirmation status in its block explorer guide.

These details describe what the ledger records. They do not, by themselves, establish the legal identities of the people or organizations behind the inputs and outputs.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin address
An address lookup can show transactions and value associated with that address. Bitcoin.org explains that Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent, so anyone can inspect an address’s balance and transaction history (Some things you need to know).
An address is not necessarily a complete wallet history. A wallet can use multiple addresses, so the activity visible on one address page should not be treated as a full inventory of a person’s Bitcoin.

Block
A block lookup can show block details and the transactions included in it. Explorer interfaces differ, so the fields and presentation depend on the service you use.

Not from an address alone. Bitcoin is public but pseudonymous: the blockchain records activity associated with addresses, not verified names. Bitcoin.org notes that an address’s identity may remain unknown until information is revealed through a purchase or other circumstance (Some things you need to know).

Identity attribution depends on information beyond the address record. For example, a merchant, exchange, or other service may have account or transaction records that connect an address to a person. An observer who has such information may be able to associate public activity with that identity; the explorer itself does not supply the link.
Be precise when describing what a transaction shows. The public record can show value moving from listed inputs to listed outputs. Calling that “Alice paid Bob” requires separate, reliable evidence that those addresses belong to Alice and Bob and that the transaction represents that payment.

What the blockchain does not tell you
- Who owns an address: An address page does not reveal a legal name on its own.
- Who controls the keys: A displayed balance does not prove that a particular person can spend the funds. An explorer shows public data; it does not provide private keys or authorize transactions.
- Why a transaction happened: The ledger does not state the parties’ purpose or intent.
- Someone’s total Bitcoin holdings: One address may be only one of several used by a wallet or organization. An address-level balance is not automatically a person’s complete financial picture.
What address reuse means for privacy
Reusing an address makes it easier for observers to relate payments and activity associated with that address. Bitcoin.org recommends using a fresh address for each payment received as a privacy measure (Some things you need to know). The Bitcoin developer guide also discusses unique addresses and avoiding the merging of funds as ways to reduce straightforward links between transactions (Transactions).
These practices can make simple linkage harder; they do not guarantee anonymity. Public transaction records remain visible, and information from services or other sources may still connect activity to an identity.

Can the explorer see what you searched?
There are two different privacy questions: what anyone can learn from the public blockchain, and what the lookup service learns when you search. Bitcoin Core’s privacy page explains that lightweight wallet query methods can disclose addresses, payments, and balances to the server being queried (Bitcoin Core privacy). A service handling a lookup may therefore learn what data you requested, separately from the public information visible to other visitors.
What confirmations mean—and how long they take
The first confirmation means a transaction has been included in a block. Each subsequent block adds another confirmation. The count indicates how many blocks have been built on top of the transaction; it is useful context, not an absolute guarantee of finality.
Bitcoin.org says new blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so an individual confirmation can arrive sooner or later with no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay (Bitcoin.org FAQ). Fees and network conditions can also affect when a transaction is confirmed. The appropriate number of confirmations to wait for depends on the transaction and the recipient’s risk tolerance; Bitcoin.org notes that each user can decide what threshold is sufficient.
Six confirmations are sometimes described as a common point at which a transaction is considered irreversible, but that is not a protocol guarantee. More confirmations generally mean more blocks have been built on top of the transaction, not that a universal rule has been met.
Quick Recap
How to read an explorer result carefully
- Identify whether you searched a transaction ID, an address, or a block; each represents a different kind of record.
- Describe on-chain details as observations about inputs, outputs, amounts, fees, and confirmations—not as proof of names, ownership, or intent.
- Treat an address balance as an address-level figure, not a person’s complete holdings.
- Remember that an explorer lookup is not a test of key custody or spending authority.
- Consider that the lookup service may learn what you searched, even though the blockchain data itself is public.
