If it drew 230 MW continuously, it would use 5,520 megawatt-hours (MWh) in a day and about 2.0148 terawatt-hours (TWh) in a 365-day year. Those are constant-load calculations, not a prediction of a particular facility’s actual consumption. Whether the project needs new grid infrastructure depends on its location, connection conditions, available supply and operating profile.
What does 230 MW mean?
MW measures power: the rate at which electricity is being used or supplied at a given moment. A 230 MW load is drawing power at a rate of 230 million watts when it is operating at that level. MWh and TWh measure energy used over time. The Missouri Public Service Commission’s explanation of energy impacts describes this distinction.

That difference matters because a capacity or load figure does not, by itself, tell you how much electricity a facility will consume over a day or year. To estimate energy, multiply the power level by the time it is sustained.
How much electricity would a 230 MW data center use?
If the facility drew a constant 230 MW, the arithmetic is:

- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
- Per day: 230 MW × 24 hours = 5,520 MWh, or 5.52 gigawatt-hours.
- Per 365-day year: 230 MW × 8,760 hours = 2,014,800 MWh, or 2.0148 TWh.
These figures assume a continuous, unchanged 230 MW draw. Actual electricity use depends on the facility’s load profile and how much of its stated capacity it uses over time. The title alone does not establish whether 230 MW refers to computing equipment, the entire facility, a proposed grid connection, or another capacity measure.
How large is 230 MW in grid-interconnection terms?
It is far above the general threshold in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s large-load interconnection proceeding: FERC describes large loads as demand greater than 20 MW. A 230 MW load is more than eleven times that benchmark. The threshold provides regulatory context; it does not mean that every project of this size requires the same upgrades. See FERC’s proceeding on interconnection of large loads.

A real example shows how a 230 MW figure can appear in a grid-operator process. The Alberta Electric System Operator lists “P3083 Keephills Data Centre Phase I – 230 MW” on its large-load projects page. AESO says its interim 1,200 MW connection limit was fully allocated and that listed projects would proceed through its connection process. The listing illustrates a project connection figure; it does not establish that the data center in this article is Keephills or specify whether that project’s 230 MW represents IT load, total facility demand or another measure. AESO’s page references a September 2025 update, and its allocation status may change.

Would a 230 MW data center require new grid infrastructure?
Possibly, but the MW figure alone cannot answer that. The effect depends on local conditions: how much supply is available, where the facility connects, the capacity and condition of nearby network infrastructure, and the project’s connection requirements. A large load may require upgrades or expansion, but no universal set of works follows from a 230 MW rating.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes data-center electricity demand as rapidly growing, regionally variable, geographically constrained in some cases and often in need of firm power. It identifies several broad response options in its overview of resources to meet data-center electricity demand:
- Generation and storage: Add or use clean generation and storage to support electricity supply. Their roles differ: generation produces electricity, while storage shifts it across time.
- Grid enhancement or expansion: Improve existing infrastructure or build additional network capacity, such as transmission or substation capability, where the connection requires it.
- Efficiency: Reduce the electricity needed to provide computing and facility services.
- Demand-side flexibility: Adjust or shift some electricity use when grid conditions call for it, where the facility’s operations allow.
These are categories of possible responses, not a prescribed package or ranking for every project. A project’s near-term ability to connect and its longer-term energy supply are related but distinct questions: a grid connection concerns the network and its conditions, while energy sourcing concerns where electricity comes from over time.

The Department of Energy’s 2024 announcement of a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report says U.S. data centers used 176 TWh in 2023, representing about 4.4% of U.S. electricity. The report estimated U.S. data-center use at 325–580 TWh in 2028, or 6.7–12% of electricity. Those are nationwide estimates, not measurements of an individual facility. A continuously sustained 230 MW load’s calculated 2.0148 TWh annual use is therefore a useful scale illustration, but it should not be treated as an observed annual total. See the DOE announcement, dated December 20, 2024.
