802.11 security protocols are the standards and mechanisms that control who can join a Wi-Fi network and how wireless traffic is protected. The names most people encounter—WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3—are generation labels, not interchangeable names for the entire IEEE 802.11 standard. To understand a router’s security setting, distinguish the Wi-Fi security label from the authentication method and the mechanism that protects data.
What does 802.11 mean in Wi-Fi security?
IEEE 802.11 is the family of standards for wireless LAN behavior, including the rules devices use to communicate over Wi-Fi. Security is one part of that broader family. WPA labels, by contrast, are Wi-Fi Alliance security profiles built around elements of 802.11 standards; they are not names for the whole IEEE standard.

The IEEE Standards Association’s current listing identifies IEEE 802.11-2024 and includes ongoing security work, including Amendment 6 on MAC Security Enhancements. That edition is an IEEE standard, not a new WPA generation.

How do WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 differ?
The names describe a historical progression in Wi-Fi security. They do not, by themselves, tell you every detail of a particular network’s configuration.

| Label | Meaning and role | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| WEP | Wired Equivalent Privacy, an early 802.11 security mechanism. | Legacy and inherently flawed, according to NIST’s 2007 guide. It remains defined in IEEE material for backward compatibility. |
| WPA | Wi-Fi Protected Access, an interim Wi-Fi Alliance security approach developed while IEEE 802.11i work was being completed. | Associated with TKIP, an interim data-protection mechanism. |
| WPA2 | A Wi-Fi security label based on the completed 802.11i security approach. | Government guidance associates it with AES and CCMP data protection. |
| WPA3 | A later Wi-Fi security generation label. | The IEEE edition listing does not establish WPA3-specific implementation or certification details; avoid inferring them from the label alone. |
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security summarizes the historical mechanisms as WEP using RC4 for confidentiality and CRC32 for integrity, WPA using RC4 with TKIP, and WPA2 using AES with CCMP. These are useful high-level associations, not proof that every device bearing a label uses only one exact configuration. The IEEE’s description of the earlier 802.11-2020 standard notes that WEP is included for backward compatibility with the original 1999 standard.
What is the difference between authentication and encryption?
Authentication and access control determine whether a device or user is allowed onto a network. Data protection mechanisms help provide confidentiality and integrity for the wireless frames exchanged after access is established. These are related jobs, but they are not the same protocol layer.

- 802.1X is a port-based network access control standard. It supports controlled access and authentication or authorization protocols, and is commonly used for enterprise Wi-Fi access.
- EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is a framework used by authentication methods. The U.S. General Services Administration discusses EAP in the context of 802.11i wireless authentication.
- TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) and CCMP (Counter Mode with CBC-MAC Protocol) are data-protection mechanisms, not user login methods. Government guidance associates TKIP with WPA and AES-CCMP with WPA2.
A shared Wi-Fi passphrase or an enterprise login is therefore not itself the cipher protecting each frame. In an enterprise setup, 802.1X and an EAP method handle access and authentication, while a mechanism such as CCMP handles traffic protection.
What is TKIP vs. CCMP?
TKIP and CCMP are mechanisms used to protect wireless data, associated historically with different Wi-Fi security generations. TKIP is associated with WPA’s interim approach; CCMP is identified by IEEE as a data-protection mechanism and is associated in government guidance with AES and WPA2.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
When comparing settings, check the mechanism actually enabled rather than relying on a generation name alone. An older router or a compatibility setting may support more than one option, so a label does not establish which mechanism a connection negotiated.
How should you interpret a Wi-Fi security setting?
Read a security configuration along four separate axes rather than treating one label as a complete security verdict:

- Authentication and access control: Is access controlled by a shared passphrase or by 802.1X with an EAP method?
- Data protection: Does the configuration use a legacy mechanism such as TKIP or AES-CCMP?
- Compatibility: Do older clients require a legacy option that changes what can be negotiated?
- Standard or certification label: Is the name referring to an IEEE specification or a Wi-Fi Alliance WPA generation?
A stronger data-protection mechanism does not by itself prove that the password, router firmware or overall configuration is secure. The IEEE standards listing documents continuing work in the 802.11 family, but it is not a deployment guide for every router or certification statement for every WPA generation.

What should you remember about 802.11 security?
802.11 is the wireless LAN standards family; WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 are security labels or mechanisms associated with different stages of Wi-Fi security. WEP is legacy and flawed; WPA is associated with TKIP; WPA2 is commonly associated with AES-CCMP. Authentication and access control—such as 802.1X and EAP—are distinct from the mechanisms that protect data in transit. Treat the generation label as a starting point, not a complete description of how a particular network is secured.
