The total is concentrated in a few broad terms: “model context protocol” alone accounts for 28.6%, and the top three phrases make up 47.6%. It is a dated estimate for a screened phrase list—not a count of every search for MCP.
What the 42,270 figure measures
Ileventech says it screened 73 phrases spanning the protocol’s name, client and server terminology, transports, comparisons such as “mcp vs api,” and adjacent topics including agent memory and agentic RAG. The publisher reports that search volumes and difficulty came from paid keyword APIs with the location set to the United States (location code 2840). The snapshot date was September 21, 2026. Ileventech’s article does not name the data provider, publish the full 73-phrase list, or explain the difficulty formula.

So 42,270 is the source’s sum for that particular screened list and location. It is not a universal tally of all MCP-related searches, nor does it establish how many distinct people searched. The source also does not specify whether the API volumes are measured or modeled.
Which phrases account for the searches?
The publisher’s reported volumes show a top-heavy pool. The phrase labels below are reproduced in lowercase, as in the source.

Figures and shares are reported by Ileventech for its September 21, 2026 U.S. snapshot; percentages may not add precisely because of rounding. The top three listed phrases—“model context protocol,” “mcp protocol,” and “a2a protocol”—represent 47.6% of the reported pool. That concentration means the headline total does not describe a broad, even distribution of interest: a substantial portion sits in a small number of naming and definition queries.
How the publisher assessed search-result overlap
Of the 73 screened phrases, 48 reportedly exceeded 50 searches per month. Ileventech fetched the top ten search results for each of those phrases and grouped phrases when their result sets substantially overlapped. Its reported outcome was 43 clusters, including four merges and 11 adjacent pairs. The full phrase list and a precise overlap threshold are not provided in the article.
Within the limits of that method and snapshot, 43 clusters from 48 phrases suggest that many qualifying queries had distinct result-page groupings. This supports planning content around phrase families and focused answers rather than assuming one broad MCP page will satisfy every search. It is evidence about the publisher’s observed results, not a guarantee that separate pages will rank or that the same clusters persist over time.

These are Ileventech’s figures for the September 21, 2026 snapshot. Because the provider and formula are undisclosed, treat the scores as that source’s estimates, not directly comparable or independently verified measures. The pattern in these examples is useful as a prompt for further investigation—some narrower terms have lower reported scores—but it does not establish that a phrase is easy to rank for or worth targeting without checking the current results and the intended audience.

Ileventech reports that in the four weeks ending September 22, 2026, its Search Console recorded 54 impressions and seven clicks, all from branded queries, with no impressions from the measured non-branded phrases. That is a first-party report about the publisher’s site during a specific four-week period, not an estimate of overall search demand. It illustrates the difference between a keyword-volume estimate and visibility earned by a particular site.
Rank #4
The publisher also says its CDN logs recorded 282 page reads with AI-crawler user agents and 144 with search-crawler user agents over one week. Those counts identify the user-agent strings in requests; they do not verify crawler identity. Ileventech explicitly cautions that user agents can be spoofed and that requests for machine files such as robots.txt can inflate counts. These are internal publisher observations, not independently audited crawler totals.

How to compare this snapshot with another one
A meaningful comparison requires holding the measurement choices steady. If you compare a later keyword tool report or repeat the analysis, align the geography and date window, use the same phrase list, establish whether volumes are measured or modeled, and understand the provider’s difficulty definition. For result-page clustering, use the same top-ten collection and overlap procedure. Ileventech supplies the U.S. location and snapshot date but not the full phrase list or its provider, so its published figures alone are not enough to reproduce the analysis exactly.
