In Routeless’s 2026 snapshot, median mobile Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) was 7.9 seconds, and 95.4% of completed mobile lab tests exceeded Google’s 2.5-second “good” benchmark. Those figures describe sampled websites tested in Lighthouse—not every U.S. small business, and not necessarily what visitors experience in the field.
What the snapshot measured
Routeless LLC’s State of Small Business Websites 2026 covers 11,432 unique business domains across 327 U.S. cities. It was collected August 24–25, 2026, and published as revision 2 on August 26, 2026. The domains were deduplicated for this snapshot; it is not a census of U.S. small businesses.

The headline mobile performance results use 11,184 sites with successful mobile PageSpeed runs. Separate homepage signal rates use 11,432 valid homepage observations. Keeping these denominators distinct matters: a percentage from one group should not be applied to the other.

Among the 11,184 successful mobile runs, median lab LCP was 7.9 seconds, and 95.4% took longer than 2.5 seconds. Routeless defines LCP as the point when the largest visible element finishes rendering and attributes the 2.5-second-or-less “good” benchmark to Google.

This is a Lighthouse lab result from the sampled sites, not proof that 95.4% of U.S. small businesses fail Core Web Vitals. A lab test uses a controlled setup; it does not represent every visitor’s device, connection, location, or browsing conditions. The report also includes field data based on eligible real-user Chrome data, but that was available for only 1,621 domains. Field and lab results are different evidence and should not be combined as if they share a sample.
WordPress and Wix differed in this sample
Routeless detected 5,923 WordPress sites and 654 Wix sites. Their sample medians differed, but the comparison is observational: it does not show that the platform caused the performance gap.

Differences in site design, page weight, themes, plugins, and other implementation choices may also matter, but this report does not isolate their effects. It likewise does not measure whether either platform’s results translate into more or fewer conversions.
What the homepage signals do—and do not—show
Across 11,432 valid homepage observations, the report’s automated checks recorded these rates:
- 63.1% had no detectable contact form.
- 29.6% had no detectable analytics tag.
- 8.4% had detectable online booking.
These are detection results, not definitive inventories of each site’s features. A form or analytics tag could be implemented in a way the checker did not recognize, or be hidden from the homepage observation. “Not detected” therefore does not establish that a business lacks the feature.
How a site owner can use the findings
The report’s practical prompt is: “Where does your website sit in the distribution?” The snapshot supplies a comparison point, not a diagnosis of an individual site or a prescription for a particular fix.
- Measure your own pages under a documented setup, and distinguish controlled lab results from eligible real-user field data.
- Compare like with like: keep the test type, page, device conditions, and reporting date in view rather than comparing unlike numbers.
- Use an unexpectedly slow result as a reason to investigate the page, not as evidence that the platform alone is responsible.
- Check important features directly before concluding they are absent based on automated detection.
The study does not report revenue, conversion rates, customer satisfaction, or the effect of any optimization intervention. It cannot establish whether improving a site’s LCP would produce a particular business outcome.
