Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) is no longer a flash-memory company. It completed the separation of its Flash business on February 21, 2025; WDC continued as an HDD company, while Sandisk Corporation (Nasdaq: SNDK) became the independent flash business. Western Digital reported that it held no Sandisk shares as of July 3, 2026. For direct listed flash exposure, Sandisk is the closest comparison established here; Micron offers broader memory exposure, and Kioxia is relevant industry context.

Is Western Digital still a flash-memory company?

No. The separation changed what WDC represents: Western Digital continued its HDD business, and Sandisk Corporation took on the Flash business. Western Digital’s FY2026 Form 10-K says it held no Sandisk shares as of July 3, 2026. WDC therefore should not be treated as a current NAND holding or a direct flash-memory stock proxy.

Western Digital described the strategic intent in its FY2026 Form 10-K, filed August 14, 2026: “We believe the Separation has better positioned us as a pure-play HDD company that can execute innovative technology and product development, capitalize on unique growth opportunities, extend our leadership position, operate more efficiently, and pursue capital allocation strategies to maximize long-term shareholder value.”

What is the difference between Western Digital and Sandisk stock?

They now represent distinct businesses and securities, not two ways to own the same combined company. WDC’s comparison case is HDD demand and data-storage infrastructure; SNDK’s is flash memory, including NAND. Sandisk’s FY2026 annual filing lists its common stock as SNDK on Nasdaq.

Company What the stock represents Useful comparison lens Boundary
Western Digital (WDC) HDD business after the separation Cloud-storage demand, AI and hybrid-data workloads, drive capacity mix, manufacturing lead times, suppliers, and customer arrangements Not a current flash-memory pure play
Sandisk (SNDK) Former WD Flash business; NAND and storage exposure End-market mix, NAND pricing and demand, technology transitions, manufacturing ramps, and strategic-partner reliance Closest direct listed flash comparison established here
Micron (MU) Diversified memory and storage portfolio, including DRAM, NAND, and NOR DRAM versus NAND exposure, memory-cycle conditions, oversupply risk, and capital demands Not a NAND-only company
Kioxia Flash-memory producer and Sandisk manufacturing-joint-venture partner Joint-venture economics, shared production, partner concentration, and technology investment No matched valuation comparison is established here

Micron’s portfolio also includes components, modules, SSDs, managed NAND, multi-chip packages, and wafers. Its broader product mix means that owning MU does not give the same single-business exposure as owning SNDK. Kioxia belongs in an industry and manufacturing discussion, but the available company materials do not establish a matched stock-valuation comparison for it.

Which stocks give investors exposure to NAND flash memory?

Among the companies considered here, Sandisk is the most direct listed route to flash exposure. Micron is a diversified memory company with NAND alongside DRAM and NOR. Western Digital is an HDD company after the separation, while Kioxia’s role in this comparison is as a flash producer and Sandisk manufacturing partner rather than a matched valuation peer.

These labels describe business exposure, not expected investment returns. A company’s revenue mix, cycle position, balance sheet, and share price all matter; the fact that a business sells NAND does not by itself establish that its stock is attractive.

What do Sandisk’s FY2026 results show—and not show?

Sandisk’s company-reported FY2026 results, for the year ended July 3, 2026, show revenue across datacenter, edge, and consumer markets. The reported growth rates are year-over-year comparisons; they describe that fiscal year rather than a through-cycle forecast.

Gross margin 71.5% GAAP; 71.6% non-GAAP Full year; accounting basis shown separately
Total revenue $8.965 billion Q4 FY2026; up 51% sequentially

For Q4 FY2026, Sandisk reported datacenter revenue of $2.977 billion, edge revenue of $5.432 billion, and consumer revenue of $556 million. The company said the sequential quarterly revenue increase came approximately one-third from higher volumes and two-thirds from higher pricing. This is a single quarter’s explanation of its reported change, not evidence that the same volume-price mix will recur.

These figures should not be set beside WDC’s total-company figures as though the companies still had the same businesses. They cover different post-separation operations, and their fiscal reporting histories differ. Sandisk’s unusually high growth and margin figures are a cyclical snapshot, not proof of sustainable growth or a stand-alone valuation case.

How do HDD and NAND cycles differ?

Western Digital: capacity, cloud demand, and production constraints

Western Digital reported that cloud-storage demand and AI or hybrid-data workloads benefited its HDD business and accelerated demand for higher-capacity drives. It also identified greater manufacturing complexity and longer production lead times for those drives. For WDC, the relevant question is how demand for HDD capacity, product mix, and the company’s ability to manufacture drives align—not how NAND prices are moving.

Sandisk: NAND pricing, technology, and partner execution

Sandisk’s FY2026 Investor Day materials framed its strategy around a NAND technology roadmap and customer partnerships. Company-identified risks include average selling price trends, demand volatility, technology transitions, manufacturing ramps, long-term agreements, and reliance on strategic partners, including Kioxia. A flash-stock comparison should therefore consider both NAND supply and demand and the execution required to move through technology and production transitions.

Micron: more than NAND exposure

Micron’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes products spanning DRAM, NAND, and NOR. Its FY2026 Q3 filing warns that increased industry investment could lead to DRAM and NAND oversupply if demand does not keep pace, putting pressure on prices and results. That is a disclosed risk scenario, not a prediction that oversupply will occur. It also means that a Micron investor is exposed to more than NAND-specific conditions.

Kioxia: a competitor and a manufacturing connection

Kioxia’s annual securities report describes joint ventures whose output is shared with Sandisk. It also discusses the possibility that future disagreements or changes to the agreements could affect operations. This connection matters when comparing company risks: firms can compete in product markets while depending on shared manufacturing arrangements.

How should I compare flash-memory stocks?

Start with business exposure and cycle drivers before comparing headline growth, margins, or valuation. A practical framework is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify what each security owns. Separate HDD exposure at WDC from Sandisk’s flash business and Micron’s broader DRAM, NAND, and NOR portfolio.
  2. Compare end markets. Review where revenue comes from and whether growth is concentrated in datacenter, edge, consumer, or other reported categories.
  3. Test the cycle assumptions. Consider NAND pricing and demand, memory oversupply risk, HDD capacity demand, and manufacturing constraints rather than extrapolating one strong period.
  4. Include execution and dependencies. Examine technology transitions, production ramps, supplier and customer arrangements, long-term agreements, and shared manufacturing partnerships.
  5. Use common-date valuation data. For a stock comparison, collect prices and financial data from the same date, then define measures consistently. Possible measures include enterprise value to sales, enterprise value to normalized operating income, free-cash-flow yield, net cash or debt, and capital-expenditure intensity.

No comparable share prices, valuation multiples, or standardized peer metrics on a common date are established here. The operating results above are not enough to call one stock cheap or expensive. Earnings multiples can also be misleading near a cycle peak if unusually strong margins are treated as normal.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell investors

The separation makes the first distinction clear: WDC is an HDD company, not a current flash-memory proxy. Sandisk is the most direct listed flash comparison in this group; Micron offers wider memory exposure, while Kioxia adds relevant context on manufacturing partnerships. Deciding which stock is preferable still requires current, consistently defined valuation data and an investor’s own view of cycle, execution, and company-specific risks.
