Where and when will the Australia Tests be played?
Cricket South Africa’s 2026/27 home-season announcement schedules the three Tests as follows:

The announced Australia Test itinerary does not include Johannesburg’s Wanderers. These are scheduled fixtures, not completed matches. Cricket South Africa’s home-season announcement is the source for the dates and grounds.
Why does Chappell think the venues could matter?
In his 1 October 2026 opinion column for The Sydney Morning Herald, former Australia captain Greg Chappell argues that South Africa’s coastal grounds could shift the contest away from conditions that particularly reward Australian fast bowlers. His comparison is qualitative: Johannesburg’s altitude and bounce may suit quick bowlers who depend on pace and steep carry, while coastal venues may place greater emphasis on movement in the air or off the pitch.

Chappell describes the three grounds as offering different possible challenges. Those are his assessments of likely conditions, not fixed properties: pitch preparation, weather and the course of a match can change what a ground offers.
Kingsmead, Durban
Chappell characterizes Kingsmead as a ground that may help bowlers early before settling. If that pattern appears, the opening sessions could test batters’ judgment and technique, while later conditions might offer a different balance. It is not a promise that the surface will behave that way in October.

St George’s Park, Gqeberha
He describes St George’s Park as dry and abrasive, with reverse swing potentially becoming relevant later. Whether reverse swing develops depends on conditions and how the ball wears; the description should be read as a possibility, not a forecast for a particular session.
Newlands, Cape Town
Chappell expects Newlands to offer movement early and become flatter. A change of that kind would reward teams able to negotiate the new ball and then make the most of more settled batting conditions, but the actual pitch and weather will determine the match-day picture.

Is leaving out Johannesburg proof the schedule was designed to blunt Australia?
No. The official fixture announcement establishes that the Tests are scheduled for Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town and that Johannesburg is absent from the itinerary. It does not establish why those venues were selected. The claim that Cricket South Africa designed the schedule to reduce Australia’s advantage is Chappell’s interpretation, not an officially confirmed motive.
Chappell also cautions against treating Johannesburg as an Australia-proof fortress. His column reports Australian Test wins at the Wanderers in 2002, 2006 and 2011, including Pat Cummins taking seven wickets on his debut in 2011, and contrasts that record with South African success at Newlands and Centurion. Those historical figures are reported in his column and have not been independently checked against primary scorecards here; they should be understood as his account rather than an audited venue record.

What would decide whether the venue choice helps South Africa?
Playing at coastal grounds may change the conditions Australia faces, but venue names alone do not determine a Test series. The advantage, if any, will depend on the pitches and weather in October, which bowlers are available and fit, and how each batting lineup responds to movement and changing surfaces. Chappell argues South Africa has bowling resources suited to movement and that Australia’s batters will need to adapt; those are his views, not established outcomes.
His column also discusses player availability and possible Australian batting-order choices, including Usman Khawaja’s absence. Those details are time-sensitive and should not be treated as official team confirmation. For readers following the series, the firmer conclusion is narrower: South Africa’s announced itinerary places Australia at three coastal venues, while the sporting effect—and any selection motive behind the schedule—remains uncertain.

What the Waterloo comparison does—and does not—claim
Chappell’s headline invokes Wellington and Napoleon as a rhetorical analogy for choosing a setting that can constrain an opponent’s strengths. The historical parallel is his framing, not a definitive account of Wellington’s intent. Its useful point for cricket is strategic rather than evidentiary: conditions can shape a contest, but a venue plan only becomes an advantage if the team uses it better on the day.
