Server-Sent Events (SSE) can deliver the live feed to browsers, but viewers must submit messages through a separate HTTP request. The choice is about how your chat communicates—not a guarantee that one option is always faster or cheaper.
How the two transports handle chat
| Question | WebSockets | Server-Sent Events (SSE) |
|---|---|---|
| Can the browser send and receive on the same connection? | Yes. WebSockets provide bidirectional communication. | No. EventSource delivers events from server to browser; submit messages separately over HTTP. |
| How does the browser receive updates? | Over the WebSocket connection. | As a persistent HTTP response with the text/event-stream content type. |
| What happens after a dropped connection? | Your application must plan reconnection and state recovery. | EventSource retries automatically. Event IDs can help identify the last event received, but replaying missed messages requires server-side retention and application logic. |
| Is a capacity or performance winner established? | Not established for livestream chat by the cited sources. | Not established for livestream chat by the cited sources. |
When WebSockets make more sense
Choose WebSockets when viewers need to submit messages and receive chat updates interactively through a single transport. That bidirectional pattern fits a conventional live chat without splitting message submission and message delivery into separate mechanisms.

A WebSocket connection does not solve every application concern. You still need to design authorization, reconnect behavior, and how a client catches up or resynchronizes after losing its connection. The protocol choice alone does not specify how your service retains messages or broadcasts them.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can SSE be used for livestream chat?
Yes. SSE can carry the incoming chat feed to the browser; it just cannot carry a viewer’s outgoing message through EventSource itself. Pair the stream with an authenticated HTTP endpoint for submissions. This can be a reasonable design when one-way event delivery is useful and keeping message submission as an ordinary HTTP request suits the application.

MDN documents SSE as a text event stream: the server responds with Content-Type: text/event-stream, and event fields such as data, event, id, and retry are separated into event blocks by blank lines. See MDN’s guide to using server-sent events.
Plan recovery, not just reconnection
EventSource retries a dropped stream, and event IDs can indicate the last event received. That does not guarantee the server kept or replayed every message sent while the browser was disconnected. An SSE chat therefore needs explicit rules for message IDs, retention, replay, duplicate handling, and resynchronization. Automatic reconnection restores the stream; your application must decide whether and how the feed catches up.

- Dynamic microphone element designed for vocals and instruments
- Cardioid pick-up pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise
- Smooth, extended frequency response is excellent for singing, speech and instruments
- Built in pop filter minimizes "P-popping"
- On-Off switch for instant mute
Keep-alive and event format
Send each event as a properly delimited block, ending it with a blank line. Consider periodic comment lines to keep an otherwise idle connection alive. SSE also supports named events and reconnection settings; consult the WHATWG HTML Standard for the normative event-stream definition.

Connection limits and deployment details
HTTP version affects SSE connection management. MDN notes a low limit of six open SSE connections per browser and domain when SSE is used without HTTP/2. With HTTP/2, simultaneous stream limits are negotiated between client and server; MDN says the default is 100. These are deployment-context details, not a universal capacity promise: the effective limit depends on the browser, server, HTTP version, and configuration. See MDN’s SSE connection guidance.

- Direct Replacement Fit: Built as a detachable headset microphone with a matching 3.5 mm gold-plated plug, helping return voice use on select gaming headsets without extra adapters
- Stable Matching Connection: The gold-plated plug supports a consistent headset mic connection, making this replacement piece practical when an existing microphone is lost or damaged
- Flexible Gooseneck Positioning: The bendable 15 cm boom arm lets you place the microphone near your mouth for comfortable chat, streaming, meeting, and call use throughout the day
- Single Replacement Piece: Each order includes a replacement microphone in a black finish, giving you a focused spare part for headset repair, setup refreshes, or backup storage
- Work And Game Coverage: Designed for voice chat, livestream, online meetings, and routine calls, this replacement mic supports communication during gaming or desk work
Also test how intermediaries and proxies behave in the deployment you will actually use. A persistent stream has to remain usable across the network path between browser and server; protocol documentation alone cannot confirm how a particular proxy, hosting setup, or configuration will handle it.

- Use WebSockets when chat needs interactive two-way traffic on one connection.
- Consider SSE plus HTTP submissions when a one-way browser feed paired with separate message requests fits your architecture.
- Test the deployment against expected event rates, audience concurrency, network path, and recovery requirements. The cited documentation describes protocol behavior, not a workload-matched comparison of chat latency, cost, or capacity.
