For frequent stock-price updates, WebSockets are usually the better fit: a client opens a persistent connection and can receive provider messages as they arrive. Polling is simpler for periodic snapshots, but each refresh waits for the next scheduled request—and neither method guarantees exchange-level freshness or access to a particular market feed.
How the two methods deliver prices
Polling: ask again at an interval
A polling client sends an HTTP request, receives the latest available value, then waits and sends another request. For example, a five-second polling interval means the display checks every five seconds whether a newer price is available. If an update arrives just after a check, the client may not show it until the next request completes.

WebSockets: subscribe and receive messages
With WebSockets, the client first establishes a connection and then can receive messages over that persistent channel when the provider publishes them. RFC 6455 describes WebSocket as an alternative to HTTP polling and specifically lists stock tickers as a suitable application: IETF RFC 6455.

WebSocket push can remove the wait for the next polling interval. It does not, by itself, make a price exchange-direct or guarantee a particular latency: the data provider, feed, network, subscription, and client processing all affect what a user sees.

WebSockets and polling compared
| Consideration | WebSockets | Polling |
|---|---|---|
| Update timing | The server can send a message when data is available, avoiding a fixed next-check wait. | Freshness depends partly on the interval and the time each request and response takes. |
| Traffic and scale | A single ongoing connection can carry repeated messages, with connection and message-processing costs. | Every interval creates another request, including when the value has not changed. Load rises with polling frequency and client count. |
| Implementation | Requires connection and subscription state, message handling, reconnection, and an overload strategy. | Often simpler for occasional reads; the client controls cadence and can use ordinary HTTP retry behavior. |
| Data access | Feed coverage, delay, and permissions depend on the provider and account. | Also depends on the provider, endpoint, and account; polling is not inherently delayed or real-time. |
| Good fit | Frequent changes, many viewers, or low tolerance for interval-based staleness. | Occasional snapshots, prototypes, or a deliberately slow refresh cadence. |
What “real time” means for a stock display
Transport describes how updates travel, not which prices the application is entitled to receive. Before choosing an implementation, define the required freshness and confirm the provider’s venue coverage, feed delay, account permissions, symbol limits, redistribution terms, and recovery behavior.
Alpaca recommends its real-time stream over polling the latest historical endpoints for accuracy and performance. Its documentation lists SIP, IEX, delayed SIP, BOATS, and an overnight feed, with availability dependent on subscription; feeds the account cannot access fail during authentication. See Alpaca’s real-time stock data documentation.

For a market-facing application, this distinction can matter beyond display convenience. SEC staff guidance notes that an unavailable or unreliable consolidated or proprietary market-data feed could significantly affect trading; the relevance of historical data varies with circumstances such as liquidity and asset class. This is regulatory context, not a recommendation for either transport: SEC staff FAQ on Regulation SCI.
Polling limits are provider-specific
Frequent polling can run into request throttles or platform policies, so check the specific endpoint’s documentation instead of assuming a universal limit. FINRA’s documented APIs, for example, specify synchronous throttling of 1,200 requests per minute per IP address and asynchronous throttling of 20 requests per minute per dataset per API account. Those figures apply to FINRA’s APIs, not to market-data services generally. FINRA also says continuous, brute-force access to the same data is inappropriate and may be blocked. See FINRA Developer Center documentation.

Provider rules can apply to streams as well as request-based endpoints. Interactive Brokers’ Web API changelog entry dated September 9, 2026 lists a history-endpoint cap of 10 requests per second or 50 per minute. Its April 14, 2026 entry says WebSocket market-data requests using the SMD topic terminate after 10 minutes and must be renewed to keep receiving that instrument’s data. These are IBKR-specific examples, not general WebSocket behavior: Interactive Brokers Web API changelog.

A persistent connection does not eliminate operational work. The browser’s stable WebSocket API does not provide backpressure: if incoming messages arrive faster than the application can process them, queued data can consume memory or make the page unresponsive. MDN documents this limitation in its WebSocket API reference.

Design the client to handle disconnects, stale values, and resubscription according to the chosen provider’s rules. Use message timestamps to distinguish a current update from an old one, and establish how the application will restore state after a gap—for example, by requesting a current snapshot and then resuming the stream if the provider supports that sequence. Do not assume that reconnecting automatically replays missed prices.

Choose based on the display’s requirements
- Choose WebSockets when updates are frequent, viewers expect changes without waiting for a polling cycle, or repeated requests would create unnecessary endpoint load.
- Choose polling when users need a periodic snapshot, the acceptable refresh cadence is slow, or a simpler request-and-response model is more valuable than immediacy.
- Consider server-sent events for browser displays that mainly receive updates and rarely need to send messages over the same connection. This is a one-way alternative worth evaluating separately.
Implementation checklist
- Set a freshness target. Define how old a displayed price may be and whether the application needs trades, quotes, or another specific data product.
- Verify the feed and entitlement. Confirm venue coverage, delay, symbol availability, intended-use permissions, and redistribution rights for the actual account.
- Check limits and lifecycle rules. Review request quotas, connection or subscription limits, heartbeat requirements, and whether subscriptions expire or need renewal.
- Plan for gaps. Identify timestamp semantics, reconnect and resubscribe steps, and whether a snapshot can restore the latest state after an interruption.
- Test client capacity. Ensure message processing can keep up with the subscribed symbols and decide what to do if updates arrive faster than the interface can render them.
