If a dashboard mainly receives updates from a server, Server-Sent Events (SSE) are often a simpler fit than WebSockets. SSE gives the browser a one-way event stream over HTTP; the page can still send user actions through ordinary HTTP requests. Choose WebSockets when the browser and server both need frequent, near-real-time messages over the same connection.
Decide by the direction of the conversation
Ask what the dashboard needs to send in real time. If the server pushes metrics, status changes, alerts, job progress, or a live feed to the browser, SSE is worth considering. If users must send frequent messages back over the live channel—for example, in interactive messaging or a game—WebSockets are a better match because they support full-duplex communication.

SSE does not prevent interaction. A dashboard can receive updates through an EventSource stream while sending commands, filters, or other user actions with regular HTTP requests. The distinction is whether those client-to-server actions need the same persistent, low-latency channel.

| Decision point | SSE with EventSource | WebSockets |
|---|---|---|
| Message direction | Server to browser for event messages; client actions can use ordinary HTTP. | Full duplex: both client and server can send messages. |
| Typical fit | Dashboards, feeds, tickers, alerts, and progress updates pushed from a server. | Interactive applications that need frequent real-time messages in both directions. |
| Reconnect and recovery | EventSource reconnects after a connection closes. Event IDs can let a server decide whether to resume or replay. | The cited web.dev comparison does not establish a built-in equivalent; recovery depends on the chosen implementation. |
| Delivery path | An HTTP event-stream response; proxies, CDNs, and servers must allow streaming without disruptive buffering or timeouts. | Uses the WebSocket protocol and requires infrastructure that supports WebSocket connections. |
| Many tabs or feeds | HTTP/1.1 per-origin connection limits can matter. HTTP/2 negotiates concurrent streams, subject to configured limits. | Connection handling and operational requirements depend on the implementation. |
This is a fit comparison, not a performance ranking. The WHATWG standard, MDN, and web.dev documentation reviewed on 7 October 2026 do not provide a generic benchmark showing that SSE is universally faster, cheaper, or more scalable than WebSockets.

How an SSE stream works
The browser’s native EventSource API opens a long-lived HTTP response whose content type is text/event-stream. The response is UTF-8 text. The server sends event fields as text lines, then ends each event block with a blank line.
For example, a stream could send a named event with a replay identifier and JSON data:

The values above are illustrative, not measured dashboard results. The fields serve different purposes: data carries the message, event gives it a name, id identifies it for possible reconnect handling, and retry can specify a reconnection delay. A blank line completes the event.

EventSource reconnects when a stream closes. If the server has sent event IDs, a reconnect can include the last received ID in a Last-Event-ID request header. The server can use that value to resume or replay events if its application supports it.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
That mechanism is not a durable event log and does not guarantee gap-free delivery on its own. If dashboard correctness depends on recovering missed changes, the backend needs a meaningful replay strategy, or the client needs a way to fetch and reconcile the current state after reconnecting. Do not emit IDs as if they promise recovery unless the server can act on them.
The WHATWG HTML Living Standard notes: “Clients will reconnect if the connection is closed; a client can be told to stop reconnecting using the HTTP 204 No Content response code.” A server can therefore use an HTTP 204 response when it wants the client to stop retrying.

Implement the client and server
Open the stream and handle events
Create an EventSource with the stream URL, then listen for the default message event or for named events such as metric-update. The API also exposes open and error events and connection state. Close the stream when the page no longer needs it.

});
source.addEventListener("error", () => {
// Observe connection state and let the UI respond appropriately.
});
// When the page or dashboard no longer needs the stream:
source.close();
If the stream is cross-origin and needs credentials, EventSource supports the withCredentials: true option. The server must also configure an appropriate CORS policy for the requesting origin and credentialed access.

Return correctly framed, unbuffered events
The server must return Content-Type: text/event-stream and terminate each event block with a blank line. MDN’s server example also uses Cache-Control: no-cache, sets X-Accel-Buffering: no, flushes output, and stops work when the client disconnects. That buffering header is an example for compatible infrastructure, not a universal switch; configure equivalent behavior for the actual web server and proxy stack.
Intermediaries can buffer chunks, impose idle timeouts, or otherwise delay delivery. On quiet connections, the WHATWG standard suggests sending a comment line periodically—“every 15 seconds or so” is its authoring suggestion for legacy proxies. A comment line begins with a colon and does not dispatch an application event.
Test the complete delivery path
A stream that works against a local development server may still be delayed or disconnected in production. Test through the real reverse proxy, load balancer, CDN, and hosting configuration, not just directly against the application process.

Account for browser connection limits
With HTTP/1.1, browsers may limit the number of simultaneous connections to a given origin, so several EventSource feeds across multiple tabs can compete for connections. HTTP/2 negotiates concurrent streams, but the usable limit is still configured and finite. If a dashboard opens many feeds or users keep multiple tabs open, consider consolidating updates into fewer streams or sharing a connection—for example, through a SharedWorker where suitable. Check the actual browser and deployment path rather than assuming unlimited connections.
Check support for your target browsers
The WHATWG edition reviewed reports SSE support in current browser engines and lists Internet Explorer as unsupported. Browser support summaries can change, and embedded webviews may differ from mainstream browsers, so verify compatibility against the actual browsers and webviews your users rely on.
