Website Security: From Basics to Advanced Measures

A practical guide to website security, from account protection and HTTPS to certificate management, infrastructure checks and tested recovery.

To secure a website, reduce risk across the whole service: its accounts, code, hosting, connections, data and recovery process. Start by knowing what you operate, then apply strong access controls, patch exposed software, enforce HTTPS, and prove you can restore a clean site. No single product or scan makes a website secure; the right controls depend on its data, architecture, exposure and the people available to maintain it.

What website security protects

Website security aims to protect three things: confidentiality (data is available only to people and systems that should have it), integrity (the site and its data are not improperly changed), and availability (people can use the service when they need it). Authentication, authorization and auditing support those goals: authentication checks who or what is requesting access, authorization limits what that identity can do, and auditing records relevant activity.

Security is ongoing risk management, not a one-time installation. NIST’s small-business guidance frames it as a continuous process because businesses, technology, laws and threats change. A small brochure site and an account-based service holding sensitive information do not need identical controls, but both need an owner who reviews risk and follows through on fixes.

Start with an inventory and a risk-based plan

Map the site and its dependencies

Write down the components that could affect the site or its data. Include the domain registrar, hosting and cloud accounts, operating system and web server, CMS, themes, plugins, libraries, APIs, source-code repositories, email and administrator accounts. Note what sensitive data the site stores or processes, where it goes, and which people or services can access it.

This inventory helps expose forgotten accounts, unused components and dependencies that need updates. It also makes clear which accounts could change DNS, deploy code, reset passwords or restore data; those controls can matter as much as the website’s own login page.

Assign owners and priorities

For each important system, identify who can make changes, who receives security or patch notices, and who is responsible for fixing problems. Prioritize work according to internet exposure, data sensitivity and the consequences of compromise or downtime. Record what was found, who owns the fix, and how you will verify it is resolved.

Set a review rhythm that fits how often the site changes and what it handles. Revisit the inventory and access when staff or vendors change, after major architecture changes, and when a service is retired. NIST recommends treating cybersecurity as continuing work rather than assuming an initial setup stays adequate.

Protect administrator and user accounts

Use strong authentication, especially on control-plane accounts

Use strong, unique passwords and consider a password manager to avoid reusing credentials. Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever the service supports it, prioritizing hosting, domain registrar, source-code, email and administrator accounts. These accounts can often change the site or take over other accounts.

CISA’s 2023 MFA guidance identifies hardware FIDO or PKI tokens as the strongest of the methods compared here, calls app-based tokens a good alternative, and treats SMS as a last resort. Check that each service supports the method you choose and understand its recovery process before relying on it.

MFA method Security position in CISA’s cited guidance Practical trade-off
Hardware FIDO or PKI security key Strongest option in CISA’s 2023 guidance Requires compatible service support and a plan for a lost or unavailable key.
App-based token Good alternative in CISA’s 2023 guidance Requires access to the enrolled device and a recovery route.
SMS code Last resort in CISA’s 2023 guidance Use when stronger methods are unavailable; CISA says it is better than having no additional security layer.

As CISA Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Eric Goldstein put it in a CISA article released July 21, 2023: “While better than having no additional security layer, Short Message Service (SMS) should be an organization’s last resort for implementing multifactor authentication.”

Limit permissions and review access

Apply least privilege: give each person, service account and integration only the access needed for its work. Avoid shared administrator logins where individual accounts are practical, remove default credentials, and disable accounts that are no longer necessary. Review who has access regularly, including vendor and former-staff access, and confirm that privileged accounts still need their permissions.

Keep the software and exposed infrastructure maintained

Patch the components the site depends on

Keep the operating system, web server, CMS, plugins, themes, dependencies and managed services current. Track vendor vulnerability and patch announcements for internet-facing components, and apply relevant fixes in a timely manner. An unused plugin, account or service is not just clutter: it is something that may need monitoring and maintenance despite no longer serving a purpose.

Find services that should not be public

CISA recommends scanning internet-facing infrastructure and ports to identify services that should not be accessible from the internet. Use findings to check whether each exposed service is intentional, necessary and maintained. A scan is a discovery aid, not a repair: assign an owner to each finding, prioritize it by exposure and likely impact, fix or formally address it, then verify the result.

Infrastructure scanning and application-focused security verification answer different questions. An infrastructure scan can identify exposed services; application-focused checks examine security behavior in the website or its code. Choose scope and frequency to match the site’s exposure and rate of change, and make sure the team has capacity to investigate and remediate what testing finds.

Use HTTPS across the site and manage certificates deliberately

Encrypt every page and remove mixed content

Use TLS for every page, not just login or payment pages. A page delivered over HTTPS can still load JavaScript, CSS or other resources over unencrypted HTTP; this mixed content can create opportunities for interception or injection. Review page resources and make them load securely.

For a public-facing website, OWASP describes serving HTTP only to issue a permanent redirect to HTTPS. API-only endpoints should disable HTTP or fail unencrypted requests where possible. Confirm that HTTPS works across the site and its relevant hostnames before relying on browser-enforced HTTPS policies.

Introduce HSTS only after HTTPS is reliable

HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) tells browsers to request a site using HTTPS and prevents users from bypassing certificate warnings. Treat it as a deliberate configuration change: first make sure HTTPS works reliably for the relevant hostnames and dependencies, then introduce HSTS in line with the site’s operational needs. A misconfiguration can make affected hostnames inaccessible to browsers that enforce the policy.

Track certificates through their lifecycle

Use certificates from a public-key infrastructure (PKI) rather than self-signed certificates for the services covered by CISA’s infrastructure-hardening guidance. CISA recommends TLS 1.3 on TLS-capable protocols and strong cipher suites; apply those recommendations according to current platform support and the site’s requirements.

Certificate security also depends on operations: know which certificates exist, what services and hostnames they cover, who owns them, and when they expire. Renew before expiry and monitor certificate status so an overlooked renewal does not interrupt a service. Manual renewal can work for a small, well-understood inventory, but it depends on an owner remembering and completing each renewal. Automated renewal and monitoring can reduce routine oversight as the inventory grows, but still need clear ownership and checks that automation is working.

NIST’s 2020 SP 1800-16 practice guide addresses formal TLS certificate-management programs for medium and large enterprises, including prevention, detection and recovery from certificate-related incidents. The principle scales down: maintain a trustworthy inventory and assign responsibility even if a small site does not need an enterprise program.

Certificate approach Expiry risk and ownership Operational fit
Manual renewal Renewal depends on the assigned owner tracking each certificate and acting before expiry. Can suit a small, stable inventory when someone is accountable and dates are monitored.
Automated renewal with monitoring Can reduce missed routine renewals, but requires an owner to monitor status and respond when automation fails. Can reduce repetitive work and support a larger or changing inventory; formal lifecycle practices are covered in NIST SP 1800-16 (2020).

Build security into the software lifecycle

OWASP frames software assurance around governance, design, implementation, verification and operations. Use those as connected parts of development rather than treating a final scan as the whole security process.

  • Governance: establish security requirements and decide who owns decisions and fixes.
  • Design: review architecture and trust boundaries, including where data enters, moves between components and leaves the system.
  • Implementation: use secure development practices and maintain the libraries and services the application depends on.
  • Verification: check controls and fixes in a way suited to the application, and confirm that findings were addressed.
  • Operations: maintain the running site, monitor relevant activity, respond to problems and keep the software current.

Make security verification part of significant changes as well as routine operations. Testing is useful only when results are triaged, assigned and followed through; distinguish a finding that is fixed from one that is still open or intentionally accepted by an accountable owner.

Make backups recoverable, not merely available

Maintain regular backups and protect them from the same compromise that could affect the live site. CISA’s ransomware guidance recommends frequent backups and offline or cloud-to-cloud approaches. Online backups may be faster to reach, but if they remain accessible through compromised credentials, they may be exposed along with the site. Offline or separately controlled copies can provide isolation, while recovery may require additional steps.

Backup approach Isolation from compromised access Recovery consideration
Online backup accessible through the same environment May be exposed if the same credentials or systems are compromised. Can be convenient to access, but its usefulness depends on whether a clean copy remains available.
Offline or cloud-to-cloud copy Recommended by CISA’s ransomware guidance as an approach to consider for backup protection. Plan how authorized staff will access and restore it; test the recovery path rather than assuming the copy is usable.

Decide who can restore the site, how they will obtain clean recovery access, and how to restore the site and its data to a known-good state. Exercise restoration periodically. A backup that has never been restored is not evidence that the site can recover.

Turn controls into a sustainable operating routine

Choose the depth of each control according to the site’s data, exposure, architecture and team capacity. A practical routine is to maintain the inventory and account reviews, track patches and certificates, scan exposed infrastructure, verify application changes, and test restoration. Keep useful logs and ensure someone can use them to investigate a problem.

For each finding or operational risk, record an owner, a priority, the intended correction and a way to verify completion. Revisit the plan when the site, team, vendors or threat environment changes. Mature security is not a longer checklist; it is a repeatable process that finds relevant weaknesses, fixes them and preserves the ability to recover.
