Website design can cost anything from a modest recurring builder subscription to $100,000 or more for a complex agency project. The price depends on what “design” includes: a visual layout alone, or a complete site with content, development, ecommerce, integrations, launch, and ongoing support. Current published ranges are useful for setting a starting budget, but only a defined scope and a provider quote can establish what your project will cost.
What do published website design prices look like?
Pricing guides use different methods and scopes, so their figures are reference points—not one universal market average. Clutch’s 2026 guide says agencies typically charge $2,000–$100,000 depending on factors such as scope, complexity, features, location, and company size. It also says most web design projects reviewed on its platform cost less than $10,000. Clutch lists $100–$149 per hour for web design companies shortlisted on its platform; its pricing data draws on more than 79,260 agency listings and thousands of verified first-party project reviews. Clutch reports an average project cost of $38,105.39, an average duration of seven months, and an average monthly project cost of $5,279.79 across the projects it reviewed. The average project cost is not the typical quote: Clutch separately reports that most reviewed projects cost under $10,000, and a smaller number of large engagements can raise an average.

WebFX’s 2026 guide puts professional website design at $500–$50,000-plus overall, with a quick breakdown of $500–$10,000-plus for freelancer work and $3,000–$30,000-plus for agency design. Its listed ranges are $100–$5,000 for a small-business website and $10,000–$50,000-plus for ecommerce or large websites. These estimates come from WebFX, not a single independent price survey. For ecommerce, WebFX associates $3,000–$10,000 with smaller functionality and $40,000–$100,000-plus with larger-scale projects involving multiple product pages, payment processing, and ordering. The range depends on what is being built; it is not a fixed price per store.
How much does it cost to hire a freelancer or agency?
Hiring a freelancer or agency usually means paying for a defined project, but the proposal may include much more than visual design. Clutch’s website-budget guide lists $500–$5,000 for a basic five-to-ten-page site and notes that custom work, ecommerce, or integrations can increase the cost. WebFX’s freelancer range is $500–$10,000-plus, while its agency range is $3,000–$30,000-plus. Clutch’s website budget guide

Use these figures to frame conversations, not to assume that two bids cover the same work. A low quote might exclude content, development, mobile testing, migration, or post-launch support. An agency proposal may include discovery, project management, quality assurance, training, or ongoing services. Ask each provider to identify deliverables, exclusions, revision limits, and recurring costs in writing.

What does a DIY website cost?
A do-it-yourself builder can reduce the upfront cost of hiring a designer, but it shifts more setup and maintenance work to you. Clutch’s 2026 budget guide gives a general DIY-builder estimate of $10–$50 per month for hosting and builder fees. WebFX’s broader DIY website-builder range is $17–$500-plus per month. The gap reflects differing definitions of what is included; neither figure is a quote for a particular plan. Clutch’s website budget guide and WebFX’s 2026 website cost guide

Clutch’s guide lists these platform-specific monthly ranges: Wix, $17–$159; Squarespace, $16–$25; Shopify, $25–$105; and WordPress, $3–$30. These are guide figures, not verified live plan quotes. Check the current plan, renewal price, included hosting and security, and the cost of any apps, plugins, or features you need before comparing them.
Templates and themes can add a one-time purchase to a builder or content-management setup. WebFX puts template costs at $20–$300-plus per template. Shopify’s September 2026 guide gives $0–$400-plus for prebuilt themes and cites a $1,000–$150,000-plus custom design-and-development range based on a 2026 GoodFirms survey; that custom estimate is GoodFirms’ survey result, as reported by Shopify, not Shopify’s own survey. What makes one website quote higher than another?
Page count matters, but it is only one part of the scope. Costs can rise when each page needs a distinct layout, when the site requires custom graphics or animation, or when a project includes ecommerce, specialized workflows, or integrations. Other important factors include who writes and edits the copy, supplies photography, and manages the site after launch.

- Design and content: custom layouts, branding, graphics, accessibility, mobile behavior, browser support, and SEO-related requirements.
- Functionality: product catalogs, checkout and payment processing, booking, memberships, user accounts, databases, or event features.
- Connections to other services: CRM, email, analytics, inventory, and third-party tools.
- Project work: discovery, information architecture, wireframes, revisions, testing, migration, launch, and training.
- Delivery conditions: provider experience and location, schedule, availability, and the amount of support after launch.
What recurring costs should you budget for?
The design or build fee is only part of the cost of owning a site. WebFX’s 2026 guide gives broad estimates of $2–$1,000 per month for hosting, $1–$12 per year for domain registration, and $5–$5,000 per month for maintenance. These wide ranges are estimates, not standardized packages; check what a provider includes and what the renewal terms are. WebFX’s 2026 website cost guide

Also account for platform subscriptions, paid apps or plugins, security and SSL, support, and transaction-processing expenses where relevant. The actual list depends on how the site is built and what services it uses. Keep recurring operating costs separate from one-time design and development fees when reviewing a proposal.

Before requesting bids, write a short scope that gives each provider the same starting information:
- The site’s purpose and intended audience.
- An approximate page count and any distinct page or content types.
- Required features, integrations, and ecommerce needs.
- Examples of sites or visual styles that fit your direction.
- Who will supply and edit text, photography, and other assets.
- Your target launch date and any platform preference.
- The training and post-launch support you expect.
Then ask each bidder to itemize one-time work separately from platform, hosting, domain, maintenance, app or plugin, and support charges. Confirm what is excluded, how many revision rounds are included, who owns the design and site assets, and how out-of-scope changes are priced. For an ecommerce quote, specify product count, page templates, payment flows, shipping and tax needs, and integrations so the proposals address comparable work.
When comparing DIY, freelancer, agency, and custom ecommerce routes, compare the same scope and the same operating period. A low subscription fee and a custom build quote do not buy the same service or leave you with the same responsibilities.
Why is there no single reliable average?
The published figures above measure different things: platform-reviewed projects, broad provider estimates, and costs that may combine design with development or other services. Clutch’s average project figure and its statement that most reviewed projects cost under $10,000 can both be true because an average is affected by high-cost projects. None of these guides establishes a universal country-wide or global median that can be applied to every site. Treat ranges as starting points, verify current plan and renewal details, and use a written scope to get a quote for your own requirements.
