Website Builder vs. WordPress: Which Is Right for You?

A managed builder bundles hosting and routine platform work; self-hosted WordPress gives you more control over hosting and more responsibility. WordPress.com is a separate hosted option.

Choose a managed website builder if you want hosting and routine platform maintenance bundled together. Choose self-hosted WordPress if you want to select your own hosting and control more of the setup—and are willing to handle more operating work. “WordPress” can also mean WordPress.com, a hosted service that is closer to a managed builder, so it helps to distinguish the two before comparing.

First, clarify what “WordPress” means

WordPress.org provides open-source software that you install with a web host. You choose the hosting arrangement and take responsibility for more of the site’s operating setup. WordPress.com is a hosted service using WordPress; its plans include hosting and automatic updates, while available features vary by plan. See WordPress.com’s explanation of the difference and its plan feature details.

That distinction changes the comparison: a website builder versus WordPress.com is a comparison of managed services, while a builder versus self-hosted WordPress is also a comparison of who runs the hosting and maintenance. Wix’s comparison guide likewise focuses on WordPress.com, which it considers more similar to Wix; it is a vendor-authored comparison, not independent evidence of which service is better (Wix vs. WordPress).

How the options differ in practice

Decision Managed builder or WordPress.com Self-hosted WordPress
Hosting and routine work Hosting is part of the service. WordPress.com says its plans include hosting and automatic updates; its guide describes managed hosting tasks such as backups, security, and caching. Exact features vary by plan (WordPress.com plan features; WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org). You choose a separate host and manage more of the operating setup. WordPress.org publishes recommended hosting requirements (WordPress requirements).
Control and features The provider runs the platform. Confirm that the specific service and plan support the features you need; WordPress.com’s features vary by plan (WordPress.com plan features). You choose the host and manage the WordPress installation, themes, and plugins. The precise capabilities and costs depend on your setup (WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org).
Moving elsewhere Portability depends on the service. Wix says sites must run on Wix servers, though it says users own the content they build and can manage a domain through another provider (Wix export and embedding guidance). Squarespace can export certain content for WordPress, but not features that depend on its platform code (Squarespace export guidance). You have a choice of hosting provider, but moving an existing site still requires migration planning.
Cost Compare the current plan price, billing term, domain, and any paid add-ons required for your site. Current comparable totals are not established here. Include hosting, domain, and any paid extensions over the same billing period. Do not assume self-hosting is cheaper without comparing equivalent needs.

Choose a managed builder if you want fewer operating decisions

A managed builder is a sensible fit when you want one provider to supply the platform and hosting rather than selecting and maintaining separate hosting. WordPress.com is another managed option: it includes hosting and automatic updates, although its plans do not all include the same features (WordPress.com plan features).

Check portability before committing if you expect to move platforms later. Wix states that its sites run on Wix servers. Squarespace offers an export route for some content, but platform-dependent features do not export as WordPress functionality (Wix export and embedding guidance; Squarespace export guidance).

Choose self-hosted WordPress if you want to control the hosting setup

Self-hosted WordPress suits site owners who want to choose their host and manage their WordPress installation, themes, and plugins. That flexibility comes with responsibility for the hosting arrangement and more of the site’s routine operation. If you choose this route, look for WordPress hosting that meets WordPress’s recommended requirements.

WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Older software may still run WordPress, but WordPress warns that end-of-life versions can expose a site to security vulnerabilities (WordPress requirements).

Compare total cost using your actual requirements

There is no useful universal price verdict without matching the services and billing periods. For each option, list the plan or hosting bill, domain cost, and paid features or extensions needed for your site. Compare the totals over the same period and check prices for your location and chosen billing term. A lower starting price is not a like-for-like comparison if it excludes a feature you need.

A quick decision guide

  • Pick a managed builder if an integrated service matters more than choosing the hosting arrangement or managing the platform setup.
  • Pick WordPress.com if you want a hosted WordPress service; check the plan feature list for the capabilities you need.
  • Pick self-hosted WordPress if you want to select the host and control more of the setup, and are prepared to take on the associated operating work.
