WebRTC media is designed to be encrypted in transit: peers establish keys with DTLS-SRTP and use them to protect audio and video with SRTP; WebRTC data channels use DTLS. But encryption alone does not verify who the other participant is, prevent a peer from learning your IP address, or guarantee that a website handles your camera, microphone, or screen privately. Those protections depend on identity checks, browser and app behavior, and the network path.
What WebRTC encryption protects
The IETF’s WebRTC security architecture describes a required security arrangement: DTLS-SRTP establishes keys for SRTP media, and data channels are carried over DTLS. WebRTC media must not use plain RTP or RTCP. RFC 8834 describes the mandatory media-security solution as a secured RTP profile combined with DTLS-SRTP keying.

In RFC 8827, author Eric Rescorla states: “Media traffic MUST NOT be sent over plain (unencrypted) RTP or RTCP; that is, implementations MUST NOT negotiate cipher suites with NULL encryption modes.” See RFC 8827, WebRTC Security Architecture, and RFC 8834, Media Transport and Use of RTP in WebRTC.
This is protection for traffic in transit, not a complete privacy guarantee. The standards describe the architecture and requirements; they do not establish the current defaults or implementation details of every browser, conferencing app, or service. A service’s signaling, server design, and handling of information it receives are separate questions that must be checked for that specific product.

Encryption does not prove who is on the call
A secure encrypted channel does not, by itself, establish that the remote participant is the person they claim to be. The connection can be cryptographically protected while the identity behind the other endpoint remains unverified.
RFC 8827 describes additional identity mechanisms, including identity-provider authentication and comparing a certificate fingerprint or short authentication string through a separate channel. Whether such verification is available or used depends on the application. Do not treat the presence of WebRTC encryption as proof of a participant’s real-world identity, or call every WebRTC session “verified end-to-end” without specifying how identity is checked and which endpoints or services are trusted.

Camera, microphone, and screen-sharing privacy
The security architecture requires explicit consent before camera or microphone access, a clear indication while those devices are in use, and a user-accessible way to stop access. It also treats HTTP and HTTPS origins as separate permission domains and says HTTP origins must not receive permission grants. These are standards requirements; the wording and location of browser controls can vary.

Can a WebRTC call reveal your IP address?
It can. ICE connectivity checks can expose an IP address to the other participant, depending on the candidates and network path the application uses. The IETF’s RFC 8827 describes mechanisms for delaying ICE negotiation until a user decides whether to answer and for allowing an application to use only TURN candidates. RFC 8828 covers IP-address handling requirements and the privacy/performance tradeoff.
TURN-only routing can reduce disclosure of your address to the peer by relaying media rather than using a direct peer path. It may add performance cost, including latency. It does not, by itself, hide your address from the calling service. RFC 8827 puts that boundary plainly: “Hiding the user’s IP address from the server requires some sort of explicit privacy-preserving mechanism on the client (e.g., Tor Browser), and is out of scope for this specification.” See RFC 8828, WebRTC IP Address Handling Requirements.

A VPN or another client-side privacy mechanism changes the network path, but this does not establish that a particular tool hides every identifying detail or protects every part of a call. The exact result depends on the browser, application, and network configuration.

| Question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Who should not see your IP address? | Peer disclosure and disclosure to the calling service are different. TURN-only candidate use can reduce exposure to the peer; it is not a promise that the service cannot learn the address. |
| Is media direct or relayed? | A TURN relay can reduce direct peer-to-peer address exposure, with a possible call-performance cost. |
| What does encryption cover? | WebRTC media and data-channel protections do not, on their own, answer how signaling is protected or what the service can access. |
| How is the other participant identified? | Find out whether the app uses an identity provider, an out-of-band fingerprint or short authentication string, or another verification mechanism. Encryption alone is not identity verification. |
| Which implementation and settings apply? | Browser and app behavior can vary. Confirm the specific product’s current options rather than assuming a setting exists or is enabled everywhere. |
Persistent identifiers can link separate calls
Encryption does not necessarily prevent activity from being correlated across sessions. RFC 8826 discusses identifiers such as reused DTLS certificates and RTCP CNAMEs as possible linkage points. RFC 8827 describes generating fresh key pairs per call and per origin as privacy protections, while allowing configured key reuse for continuity. These are design considerations in the standards, not evidence that a particular current browser exposes a particular identifier. See RFC 8826, Security Considerations for WebRTC.
Practical checks before and during a call
- Check the site or app. Confirm that you intended to open it and that its identity-verification options suit the call. The WebRTC standards do not verify the other participant’s real-world identity for you.
- Review permissions. Grant camera or microphone access only when needed. Pay attention to the browser’s active-device indicator and use its controls to stop access.
- Inspect screen sharing before you approve it. Confirm the selected screen, window, or tab and stop sharing as soon as you are finished.
- Consider peer IP exposure. If the app offers a TURN-only or relay-only option, check what party it is intended to protect you from and whether the potential performance tradeoff is acceptable. Do not assume this also hides your address from the service.
- Verify identity separately when it matters. Use the app’s stated verification method, such as an out-of-band comparison, where available; an encrypted connection alone is not confirmation of identity.
Common privacy misunderstandings
- “Encrypted means anonymous.” No. Encryption protects traffic in transit; it does not inherently hide your IP address from the peer or service, nor does it remove persistent identifiers.
- “The browser permission means the site is trustworthy.” No. Permission governs access to devices; it is not a guarantee about how a site handles media after access is granted.
- “A relay hides my address from everyone.” Not necessarily. TURN-only routing can reduce disclosure to the peer, but does not promise concealment from the calling service.
- “A secure channel proves the person’s identity.” No. Participant identity requires a separate verification mechanism.
A different use case: keeping a YouTube channel live
StreamNeo is not a WebRTC calling or camera-sharing tool. It is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud continues the stream without a computer or home connection staying on. It is a separate option for prerecorded-video broadcasting, not a privacy setting for WebRTC calls.
