WebRTC Explained: How It Works, How It Differs from WebSockets, and How to Implement It

WebRTC combines browser APIs with protocols for real-time audio, video, and data. Learn how signaling, ICE, STUN, and TURN fit together—and what your application must provide.

WebRTC is a set of browser APIs and network protocols for real-time audio, video, and data communication. It does not provide a complete calling service or dictate how users find each other: your application must provide signaling, while WebRTC uses ICE, STUN, and sometimes TURN to establish a working network path. The browser-facing APIs are specified by the W3C; the protocols are specified by the IETF.

What WebRTC is—and what it is not

WebRTC is both an API effort and a protocol suite. The APIs let suitably authorized page JavaScript use browser communication features; the protocols define how compatible endpoints communicate. Endpoints do not have to be browsers, and an implementation can use the protocols without implementing the browser JavaScript API.

The IETF’s RFC 8825, published in January 2021, describes the goal as enabling implementations to communicate with audio, video, and data sent along the most direct possible path between participants. “Most direct possible” is not a guarantee of a direct peer-to-peer connection: a relay or a server-routed conferencing design may be necessary or desirable.

  • WebRTC provides: standardized browser communication APIs and protocols for real-time media and data transport.
  • Your application provides: user discovery, authentication, signaling, product controls, and any service infrastructure the product needs.
  • WebRTC does not promise: that every call is direct, that a TURN relay is unnecessary, or that the application is secure merely because its media transport is encrypted.

How a WebRTC connection works

A typical browser call has two distinct flows: a signaling path used to arrange the connection, and a media or data path used after connectivity is established. They can use different systems.

  1. Set up signaling. The application identifies the participants and provides a way to exchange setup messages. These include session descriptions and, as they become available, ICE candidates.
  2. Request local media if needed. When the feature needs a microphone or camera, the browser asks for permission and exposes capture capabilities subject to browser, operating-system, and device support. A data-only feature need not request camera or microphone access.
  3. Negotiate the connection. The browser’s peer-connection API coordinates tracks, session descriptions, and connection state. The application exchanges the offer and answer through its signaling channel; signaling is not the media transport.
  4. Gather and exchange ICE candidates. ICE checks candidate pairs to find a usable route through the participants’ NATs and firewalls. Candidates must be exchanged through the application’s signaling path.
  5. Send media or data. If connectivity succeeds, media uses secure RTP with DTLS-SRTP key exchange. Data channels use SCTP over DTLS over ICE.
  6. Monitor and recover. The application observes connection state, media statistics, device changes, and failures. It should account for reconnects, ICE restarts where appropriate, and permissions being revoked.

The signaling channel helps the endpoints agree on how to connect; it does not carry the call’s audio or video by definition. The actual path may be direct, relayed through TURN, or routed through conferencing infrastructure.

What signaling means, and why WebRTC does not provide it

Signaling is the application-level communication used to establish, manage, and control communication paths. WebRTC specifies the connection mechanisms, but it does not mandate a signaling protocol or service. The application decides how users meet and how setup information moves between them.

HTTPS, WebSockets, SIP, or another application design can carry signaling. WebSockets are a common choice when an application needs a persistent bidirectional messaging channel, but choosing WebSockets does not itself provide media capture, ICE connectivity, or secure RTP transport. SIP can be part of a WebRTC application or gateway architecture, but SIP and WebRTC are not synonyms; interoperability may require compatible media negotiation, codecs, and security.

Keep signaling responsibilities separate from media transport in the design. That makes it clearer which component handles identity and call setup, which handles connectivity, and which carries media or data.

ICE, STUN, and TURN: how WebRTC crosses networks

ICE is the connectivity-establishment framework. It gathers possible network paths, exchanges candidates, checks candidate pairs, and selects a route that works. NATs and firewalls can prevent a direct path even when both endpoints are online.

Component Role What to plan for
ICE Tests possible candidate pairs and selects a working path. Both endpoints need to exchange candidates through signaling.
STUN Helps an endpoint discover a server-reflexive address and supports connectivity checks. A STUN server alone is not a universal solution for restrictive NATs or firewalls.
TURN Allocates a relay address so traffic can pass through a server when a direct path is not viable. Provide relay capacity for networks where direct connectivity fails. RFC 8835 requires TURN support for endpoint-dependent NAT mappings and support for TURN over TCP and TURN over TLS/TCP for firewalls that block UDP.

A call using TURN is still using WebRTC protocols, but its traffic is relayed rather than traveling directly between endpoints. Separately, conferencing services may intentionally route media through servers for scale, recording, moderation, or mixing. Those are service architecture choices, not evidence that WebRTC requires a direct path.

WebRTC compared with WebSockets, SIP, and HTTP

Technology What it provides Relationship to WebRTC
WebRTC Browser-facing APIs and real-time network protocols for media and data. Handles capture and connection APIs plus secure media and data transport; the application still chooses signaling and service architecture.
WebSocket A bidirectional application-messaging channel. Can carry signaling messages, but does not itself provide WebRTC media capture, ICE traversal, codecs, or secure RTP media transport.
SIP A signaling protocol and broader telephony ecosystem. Can be used in a WebRTC application or gateway architecture; they are distinct technologies and interworking can require compatible media negotiation, codecs, and security.
HTTP polling or ordinary client/server APIs Request/response application communication. Useful for many application operations, but not a direct substitute for interactive real-time media transport.

Choose based on the product rather than treating these as interchangeable protocols. For an implementation comparison, assess browser and native-client coverage, whether media is direct, relayed, or server-routed, behavior on restrictive networks, operational costs and control of signaling/TURN/media servers, security and permissions, and requirements for observability, recording, moderation, and scaling.

Implementing a WebRTC feature

1. Design the application and signaling path

Decide how users discover one another, authenticate, and exchange offers, answers, and ICE candidates. Select a signaling transport that fits the application; WebRTC does not choose it for you. Protect the signaling service and validate who is allowed to join or control a session.

2. Request microphone or camera access only when needed

Use browser capture APIs for the feature that actually needs local media. Explain why access is needed, provide clear controls, and handle permission denial, revoked permissions, or devices disappearing. Device selection, capture quality, and echo cancellation depend on browser and system support.

3. Create the peer connection and negotiate

Use the browser peer-connection API to coordinate tracks, session descriptions, and connection state. Exchange offer and answer through signaling, keeping this application logic separate from the browser’s media transport responsibilities.

4. Exchange candidates and configure relay fallback

Configure ICE servers for the deployment, exchange gathered candidates, and test whether direct connectivity works across the networks your users actually use. Do not assume STUN is enough; make TURN available for cases where a direct path fails. Include TURN over TCP and TLS/TCP support when UDP-blocking firewalls are in scope, as described by RFC 8835.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Treat media and data channels as different design choices

Media uses secure RTP; data channels use SCTP over DTLS over ICE. For a data channel, choose ordering and reliability behavior to suit the information being sent, and consider message sizes and congestion. Do not treat a data channel as an unlimited or interchangeable media pipe.

6. Build state handling and diagnostics before launch

Observe connection state, media statistics, device changes, and failures. Define what the interface does when a participant disconnects, a device is removed, access is revoked, or the selected path stops working. Plan reconnection and ICE restarts where appropriate, and track when sessions use TURN so network and operational problems can be diagnosed.

Does WebRTC need a server?

Usually, an application needs at least a signaling service or another way for participants to exchange setup information. It may also need TURN relays when direct connectivity is not possible. A conferencing product may use media servers for routing, recording, moderation, mixing, or scale. The media path can be direct even though signaling uses a server; conversely, WebRTC endpoints can send media through a relay or conferencing server.

The IETF’s RFC 8835 specifies TURN support for relevant network cases, including endpoint-dependent NAT mappings, and TCP and TLS/TCP options for UDP-blocking firewalls. Whether a deployment needs a relay for a particular call depends on network conditions; a STUN server cannot guarantee direct connectivity.

Security and privacy responsibilities

WebRTC media transport is designed around secure RTP and DTLS-based key exchange. That protects transport, but it does not make a calling application inherently trustworthy. RFC 8826’s security analysis emphasizes that the web service controls signaling and ultimately the JavaScript application logic. A service can influence who is called, what permissions the interface requests, and how the application behaves.

  • Authenticate participants and authorize access to sessions through the application’s signaling and service layers.
  • Request camera and microphone access only when the feature needs it, and make permission status and call controls understandable.
  • Protect the application code and signaling path from unauthorized changes or access.
  • Make recording, relaying, or server-side media handling clear to users when those features are part of the service.

Compatibility and deployment checks

Browser behavior changes, and a single universal compatibility matrix is not established here. Consult the current browser documentation and test the actual browser and operating-system combinations your users rely on before making support promises.

  • Test microphone and camera permission flows, including denial and revocation.
  • Test calls across the NATs and firewalls relevant to your audience, including networks that block UDP.
  • Verify direct and TURN-relayed connectivity, and check that the application responds sensibly when either path fails.
  • Exercise reconnection, device removal, and session state changes rather than testing only the successful first connection.
  • Validate your signaling authentication and authorization separately from media connectivity.

Common WebRTC problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect Practical response
Participants never connect on some networks Direct ICE connectivity may be blocked or unavailable. Check candidate exchange and ICE state; provide TURN rather than relying on STUN alone. Consider TCP or TLS/TCP relay paths where UDP is blocked.
One participant joins, but the other never receives setup information Signaling delivery or session authorization. Verify that offers, answers, and candidates reach the intended participant and that the signaling service authorizes both sides.
Camera or microphone is unavailable Permission state, device availability, or browser/system support. Check the browser permission, selected device, and whether the device was removed; provide a usable permission-denied state.
Connection drops after it was established Network changes, device changes, or stale connectivity. Observe connection state and statistics, define reconnect behavior, and consider an ICE restart where appropriate.
Media works but a data feature does not Data-channel design or application handling. Review channel ordering and reliability, message size, congestion handling, and the application’s handling of data-channel state.
Call appears encrypted but users still have privacy concerns Application behavior and service control, not just transport encryption. Review permissions, participant authorization, signaling security, application code integrity, and disclosure of any recording or server-side handling.

A separate use case: keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live

WebRTC is for real-time communication; it is not a service for looping uploaded videos on a YouTube channel. If that is the task you came here to solve, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, so a computer does not need to stay on. See StreamNeo for details or start the free first day.
