A webhook timeout means the sender did not receive the expected acknowledgement before its deadline. It does not prove that your application failed to process the event: the receiver may have committed the work and lost the response. Before starting a new attempt, check durable receiver records and authoritative provider state; retry only when you know what remains to be done.
What a webhook timeout does—and does not—tell you
The timeout describes what the sender observed: no timely acknowledgement. It cannot tell you whether your handler ran, a database transaction committed, a worker finished, or an external side effect succeeded. This ambiguous outcome is why blindly repeating business work can create duplicate records, charges, notifications, or other effects.

There is no universal webhook timeout or retry policy. Shopify, GitHub, and other providers document different deadlines and delivery behavior. Treat the sender’s delivery status as evidence about delivery, not proof of the receiver’s business outcome.

Validate the request, durably record or enqueue it, and return the provider’s expected success response within its documented deadline. Keep slow downstream work out of the request path. A success response should mean that the event has been safely accepted, not that every later task has finished.

For Shopify HTTPS webhook delivery, the current documentation specifies a one-second connection timeout and a five-second overall request timeout. Shopify recommends a quick 200 OK and queueing work; it treats any response outside the 200 range, including redirects, as an error. GitHub asks for a 2XX response within 10 seconds and recommends asynchronous queueing. These are provider-specific requirements, not a shared standard: Shopify delivery guidance and GitHub’s webhook best practices.
Make acceptance durable before acknowledging
Verify the sender before trusting the payload. Shopify requires verifying the HTTPS HMAC against the raw request body. Then persist an inbox record or enqueue the event on durable infrastructure. Coordinate that acceptance record with deduplication so a crash cannot leave the event in a misleading state—for example, applied but recorded as unaccepted.

Keep processing safe under concurrency
Give the event or logical business operation a stable key, and protect the side effect with a unique constraint, transaction, or equivalent concurrency-safe mechanism. A separate “check whether it exists” followed by “create it” is not sufficient if two duplicate deliveries can run at once. Once a delivery is known to be safely handled, acknowledge a duplicate without applying its side effect again.

- Inspect receiver state. Check the durable inbox, transaction record, queue status, worker logs, and operation log. Establish whether the event was accepted, whether processing started, and whether the intended effect committed.
- Check authoritative provider state where available. Retrieve the relevant event or resource and compare its current state with the intended outcome. Shopify recommends periodically retrieving data through its APIs to recover missed information. Stripe, for example, documents retrieving an event by ID for events created in the last 30 days: Retrieve an event. Availability and history limits vary by provider.
- If the effect completed, close the event. Mark it complete in your system and treat a later redelivery as a duplicate. Do not create a second business operation merely because the sender timed out.
- If the effect did not happen, resume the same logical operation. Use the same operation identity or provider-supported idempotency key when retrying. That makes a repeated request a continuation of the same intended action rather than a new one.
- If the outcome remains uncertain, keep it pending reconciliation. Do not create a distinct operation until you can establish whether the first one took effect. Preserve enough state and logs to resolve the ambiguity.
Stripe’s idempotency feature illustrates the distinction between provider guarantees and webhook-handler design. It applies to Stripe API POST requests: reusing a key can return the first saved result rather than perform the request again. Stripe saves the result once endpoint execution begins, including a 500 response; keys may be pruned once they are at least 24 hours old, and reusing a pruned key can start a new request. Mismatched parameters with the same key produce an error. These rules do not automatically make an incoming webhook handler idempotent. See Stripe’s idempotent requests documentation.

Use delivery identifiers for the right kind of deduplication
A delivery identifier and an event identifier may represent different things. Choose the key based on whether your system needs to suppress duplicate deliveries or correlate the same underlying action across deliveries. Do not assume identifiers have interchangeable scope.
| Provider | Identifier and behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | X-Shopify-Webhook-Id identifies an individual delivery. X-Shopify-Event-Id correlates deliveries arising from the same merchant action, including separate subscriptions. Shopify documentation |
Use the delivery ID to recognize a repeated delivery; use the event ID when correlating the underlying action across deliveries. Select the scope deliberately. |
| GitHub | X-GitHub-Delivery identifies a delivery, and a requested redelivery uses the original delivery ID. GitHub documentation |
Redelivery can be handled idempotently under the same delivery ID, but that ID does not establish that your business effect succeeded. |
Know what the sender will retry—and what it will not
Provider retries are bounded and provider-specific. Shopify says that when it receives no response or an error, it retries eight times over the next four hours. After eight consecutive failures, an Admin API-created subscription is automatically deleted. Its delivery logs show response, attempt count, response time, and related details; Shopify flags responses taking four to five seconds as a concern. These details can help establish what Shopify observed, but not whether your operation committed: delivery guidance and troubleshooting guidance.

GitHub terminates the connection and considers delivery failed if the server does not respond within its 10-second window. It recommends redelivering missed deliveries after service recovery. Manual redelivery and automatic retries are not a substitute for an application-owned recovery path: maintain a way to inspect delayed or exhausted events and reconcile against provider state.

A practical recovery and prevention checklist
- Verify the request signature before trusting its contents.
- Persist an inbox record or durable queue entry before acknowledging.
- Return the provider’s expected success response within its own deadline; move slow work to a worker.
- Deduplicate durably using an identifier whose scope matches the operation.
- Guard business side effects against concurrent duplicate processing.
- On timeout, inspect receiver records and provider state before repeating work.
- Track delivery attempts, worker outcomes, and retry exhaustion; reconcile periodically rather than relying only on sender retries.
