Neither Webflow nor WordPress is better for every website. Choose Webflow if you want a visual design-and-publishing service with hosting bundled into its Site plans. Choose self-hosted WordPress if you want open-source software, freedom to choose a host, and a broad plugin ecosystem—and are prepared to manage that stack. The right choice depends on how you will build and maintain the site, what it needs to do, and what you may need to move later.
This comparison means Webflow versus the open-source WordPress.org software installed with a hosting provider—not Webflow versus a WordPress.com subscription. Those are different products and cost models.

Webflow vs. self-hosted WordPress at a glance
| Decision | Webflow | Self-hosted WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| How you build | Visual site builder with Webflow platform features and hosted publishing | Open-source software extended with a theme, editor, plugins, and other choices |
| Hosting | Webflow Site plans provide the hosted publishing route; a paid Site plan is needed for a custom domain | You select a compatible web host and configure or use its WordPress-specific services |
| Cost structure | Site subscription; Workspace plans can separately affect collaboration and staging; ecommerce fees depend on plan | No software licensing fee, but hosting and any paid themes, plugins, services, or maintenance are separate |
| Extending the site | Webflow features, apps, APIs, and code components, subject to platform limits | Themes and plugins, with broad scope for modification under the GPL |
| Moving away | Code export is available, but it does not export a complete working CMS site or preserve all functions | You control the software and choose the host; moving still involves the site’s content, configuration, and chosen services |
| Online store | Plan-based catalog limits and, on Standard, an additional Webflow transaction fee | WooCommerce is one available ecommerce route; total costs depend on the specific setup |
These are differences in product design, not results from building identical sites or running a comparative speed or SEO test.
Should you use Webflow or WordPress for your website?
Choose Webflow for a visual, hosted workflow
Webflow is a strong fit when the people designing and updating the site want hands-on visual control and prefer a managed route to publishing and hosting. Its paid Site plans combine publishing with site features; collaboration and staging may also involve a separate Workspace plan. That arrangement can reduce the number of infrastructure decisions, but it ties publishing to Webflow’s plans and product limits.

Choose WordPress when control and extensibility matter more
Self-hosted WordPress suits readers who want to choose their host, modify open-source software, and assemble site features through themes and plugins. WordPress.org describes the software as open source under GPLv2 or later, with rights to run, study, modify, and redistribute it. Its official Plugin Directory lists over 74,000 free plugins; that live count can change, and it does not mean every plugin is necessary, suitable, or maintained to your needs.
The trade-off is responsibility: you select hosting and decide how updates, backups, security, and extensions are handled. Some hosts offer WordPress-oriented services such as preinstallation, backups, updates, or developer tools. WordPress.org’s current recommendations are PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 or later, and HTTPS; Apache or Nginx is recommended, though other compatible servers may work. See the WordPress requirements and hosting guidance.
Which is cheaper, Webflow or WordPress?
There is no meaningful universal price comparison without specifying the site and its needs. Webflow charges for Site plans, and a Workspace plan may be relevant for team collaboration or staging. WordPress software has no licensing fee, but a self-hosted site needs a web server, and its chosen hosting, extensions, services, or maintenance can add costs. WordPress.org explains its software model on its features page and documents hosting requirements separately.

Webflow’s live pricing page lists a free Starter Site plan and paid Site plans. It lists Basic at $15 per month and Premium at $25 per month, each billed yearly, in USD per site per month before applicable taxes. A paid Site plan is required to publish to a custom domain. Webflow distinguishes Site plans, which cover publishing and site features, from Workspace plans, which support staging and collaboration. Prices and plan names can change, so confirm the current Webflow pricing before purchasing.
For a fair budget comparison, list the actual first-year and renewal costs for the functions you need: publishing, hosting, collaboration, forms, commerce, extensions, and any paid maintenance. Do not treat WordPress as cost-free beyond its software license, or assume every WordPress site needs paid plugins or a developer.
Is Webflow better than WordPress for SEO?
There is no basis here to say either platform inherently ranks better. Webflow lists features such as redirects, sitemap controls, schema support, and Open Graph metadata on its pricing page and describes the platform as SEO-friendly. WordPress offers plugin choices including SEO tools such as Yoast in its official plugin directory. Having a feature available does not establish how well a particular site implements it or how it will rank.

Choose based on which platform lets your team reliably manage the technical and editorial work your site needs. A claim that one is categorically faster or produces better rankings would require independent, comparable testing; feature lists alone do not prove either outcome.

Webflow publishes explicit ecommerce plan limits and fees. The following figures are listed by Webflow in USD per site per month, billed yearly, before applicable taxes; verify the live page because pricing can change.
| Webflow ecommerce plan | Price billed yearly | Ecommerce items | Webflow transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $29/month | 500 | 2%, in addition to Stripe or PayPal processing fees |
| Plus | $74/month | 5,000 | 0% |
| Advanced | $212/month | 15,000 | 0% |
Webflow also describes custom shopping cart and checkout features. Check the Webflow pricing page for current plan details and payment terms.

For WordPress, WooCommerce is one available store route, not a complete like-for-like cost quote. The WordPress plugin directory lists it as store software, but the total depends on the hosting, extensions, and services selected for the shop. Compare the catalog size, payment processing, required functions, and who will operate the store rather than assuming a particular WordPress total.

Webflow offers code export, but an export is not a complete portable copy of a CMS-driven site. Its pricing page describes HTML and CSS export and says CMS items and pages cannot be exported through that feature. The page’s FAQ explains that dynamic content can be exported collection by collection, forms stop working after export, and exported code cannot be reimported into Webflow.

Before choosing Webflow, identify what would need to move: static layouts, CMS records, forms, URLs, ecommerce data, and connected workflows. Code export may help preserve parts of a static presentation, but expect CMS and functional elements to need separate migration or rebuilding. WordPress’s GPL license supports modification and redistribution of the software; it is not a promise that every migration between WordPress hosts or setups will be effortless. See the Webflow export details, WordPress license, and WordPress project information.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Who will build and update it? Favor Webflow if visual page control and a managed publishing workflow fit the team. Favor WordPress if the team can choose and manage a host and wants to work with themes and plugins.
- What is the real budget? Compare the full stack and billing cadence, including any Workspace needs, hosting, commerce fees, and paid additions.
- How much flexibility do you need? WordPress offers open-source modification and a large plugin directory; Webflow offers platform features and code components within its product model.
- What must be portable? List content and workflows, not just exported HTML and CSS. Webflow’s export has CMS, forms, and reimport limitations.
- Is it a store? Compare Webflow’s item allowances and transaction fees with the particular WordPress and WooCommerce setup you would actually operate.
