Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with Windows Update, then try Device Manager. If Windows cannot find a compatible driver—or the camera needs model-specific features—download the package from the official support page for the exact webcam or computer model. Many USB webcams work for standard video with Windows’ built-in UVC driver, so a separate download is not always necessary.
Before changing drivers, check whether the camera is actually failing
A black preview or missing camera in an app does not automatically mean the driver is wrong. Check that the lens is not covered, the physical privacy shutter is open, and Windows and the app are allowed to use the camera. If possible, test it in the Windows Camera app; if it works there but not in a meeting app, check that app’s camera permission and selected camera.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and enable camera access and access for the relevant apps.
- Check the webcam’s physical shutter or any obstruction over the lens.
- Confirm whether the camera appears in Device Manager under Cameras or Imaging devices.
Identify the camera and Windows version
For a USB webcam, note the manufacturer and exact model. For a built-in laptop camera, identify the computer’s manufacturer and model: camera and sensor components may be packaged with other computer-specific drivers. Also check whether the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, because Settings labels and paths differ.

Windows Update is the preferred first place to look for recommended hardware drivers. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Then look under Advanced options > Optional updates for a camera-related driver. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically; select the relevant update and install it, then restart the computer.

Windows 10 has a different Settings layout, but driver updates are also available through Windows Update. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date does not change the need to use a driver that matches the installed Windows version and device. Microsoft’s Windows driver update guidance explains the update route.
Search for or install a driver in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager and expand Cameras or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the camera and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows does not find a suitable driver and you have downloaded a package from the official manufacturer’s site, choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers and select the folder containing the extracted package.
Make sure a manual package is intended for the exact camera or computer model and the installed Windows version and architecture. Microsoft advises against downloading drivers from unrelated third-party sites; use the webcam maker’s support page for an external camera or the computer maker’s page for an integrated one. Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions cover automatic search and manual installation.

Choose between the built-in UVC driver and a manufacturer package
| Driver route | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft in-box UVC driver | A UVC-compatible external USB camera used for standard video, or as a troubleshooting test. | Manufacturer-specific features may be unavailable, including some Windows Hello integrations. |
| Manufacturer-specific package | Exact model features, integrated camera or sensor components, or when Windows’ available driver is insufficient. | It must match the exact model and Windows version; obtain it from the manufacturer’s official support page. |
Many USB webcams support USB Video Class (UVC), allowing Windows to use its built-in Usbvideo.sys driver without a separate vendor download. Microsoft states, “When your device uses UVC, you don’t need to supply your own driver.” That can provide standard video operation, but not necessarily every feature the manufacturer designed. Microsoft’s USB Video Class Driver Overview describes the built-in driver.

Roll back or reinstall a camera driver
Roll back after a recent update
If the camera stopped working after a driver update, open the camera’s Properties in Device Manager and check the Driver tab for Roll Back Driver. Windows does not always make rollback available.
Reinstall the device
- In Device Manager, right-click the camera and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart the computer, or use Device Manager’s option to scan for hardware changes, so Windows can detect the camera and reinstall a driver.
If the uninstall confirmation offers to delete the driver package, do not select that as a first troubleshooting step. Removing the package can leave Windows without the driver it would otherwise reuse; consider it only when you have a suitable replacement package or a specific reason to remove the old one. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting steps describe uninstalling and reinstalling a camera device.

When the webcam does not appear in Device Manager
If an external USB webcam is absent from Device Manager, try a different USB port and connect it to another computer. These checks can help distinguish a port or connection problem from a webcam hardware fault. For a built-in camera, use the computer manufacturer’s official diagnostics and support instructions for the exact model. Dell’s webcam troubleshooting guidance recommends testing an external webcam on another computer to help rule out hardware failure.
Confirm the fix
Open the Windows Camera app and check for a live preview. If the preview works there but not in another application, focus on that app’s camera permissions and camera selection rather than reinstalling the driver again. If the camera remains unavailable, return to the exact model’s official support guidance and check connection, permissions, and hardware status as well as the driver.
