What does “web white pages” mean?
In its clearest and most common directory sense, a web white-pages service is a people-focused listing: it helps someone identify or contact members of a group, organization, or broader directory. A patent describing collaborative online environments defines white pages as a directory of members with information about them and how to contact them, giving email addresses and telephone numbers as examples (US 2005/0055306 A1).

“Web white pages” is not a uniquely standardized product name. In some early web writing, “white pages” referred more broadly to online finding aids or directories for web resources. A 1998 patent used the analogy of hardcopy white- or yellow-pages volumes for the Web while discussing online tools for finding information (US 5,778,367). The subject being listed—people or websites—determines the meaning.
How are white pages different from a search engine?
A general search engine searches an index of web documents. The 1998 patent describes automated robots or spiders following links and storing information about documents in a database; it separately discusses directories populated through submitted listings (US 5,778,367).

These are practical distinctions, not absolute rules: historical sources sometimes used “white pages” for directories of web resources. A directory may also be searchable without being a general-purpose search engine.
What might a web white-pages directory contain?
Depending on its purpose, a listing may include a person’s name, membership or organizational details, and ways to contact them. A directory for a defined group may be public or limited to that group; the term alone does not tell you who can see an entry or who is allowed to add or change it.

One proposed early-web directory model let users submit, classify, search, and update entries, with control over entry content and categorization (US 5,778,367). That patent documents a design, not proof that its proposed service became widely used or that all directories offer the same controls.
Why do data sources and privacy controls matter?
A directory’s entries may come from more than direct user submissions. NTIA’s historical account of Four11, an early web white-pages company, describes names, email addresses, telephone numbers, and other data drawn from multiple sources: telephone information licensed from Metromail, and email addresses from user registrations, public-domain internet directories, and Usenet (NTIA, “Chapter 5: Technology and Privacy Policy”).

That account also describes a way to request removal while noting that information could reappear from another source. It is a historical example, not a statement about Four11 today or about current directory services. For any specific directory, check the source of each listing, whether people can correct or remove it, and who operates or controls the service. The term “white pages” by itself establishes none of those practices or any current legal right.

- What it lists: people or members, web resources, or another category.
- Who can see it: the public, a defined organization, or another group.
- Where entries come from: user submissions, organization-maintained records, aggregated sources, or a combination.
- Who can edit listings: the listed person, an administrator, or the service operator.
- How to correct or remove information: whether a clear process exists and how changes are handled if data appears from another source.
