Web vs. Mobile Live Streaming: Which Is Better for YouTube?

Use mobile for on-location streams, a webcam for a simple computer setup, and an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, or advanced production. Check mobile eligibility and orientation before you go live.

There is no single winner: go live from your phone when you need to broadcast from the scene, use YouTube’s computer webcam option for a straightforward fixed setup, and choose an encoder when you need screen sharing, gameplay, overlays, or connected production gear. Mobile has extra eligibility requirements, and your choice of vertical or horizontal video is a separate decision from whether you stream by phone or computer.

Should I livestream from my phone or my computer?

First decide what you need to show and where you will be. YouTube describes mobile streaming as suited to vlogging and quick updates, and its webcam option as a quick way to stream from a computer. If you need to capture a computer screen or gameplay, add overlays, connect external audio or video equipment, or coordinate multiple cameras and microphones, use an encoder workflow instead.

Method Best fit Basic setup Eligibility notes Production control
Mobile app Vlogging and quick updates from a phone or tablet Supported phone or tablet and the YouTube app Mobile-specific subscriber and device rules, in addition to general live-stream requirements Direct app workflow
Computer webcam A quick stream from a computer Computer and webcam General live-stream requirements Direct webcam workflow
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external hardware, or multi-camera production Software or hardware encoder; connected audio/video gear if needed General live-stream requirements; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours Most flexible of these routes for external gear and advanced production

These are use-case recommendations, not a promise that one method delivers better quality, reliability, reach, or latency. Those outcomes depend on your equipment, network, lighting, audio, and setup. YouTube also says you do not need expensive equipment to begin; practicing with a test stream is a sensible way to check your setup before a public broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming guide and live-streaming tips describe the platform’s options and preparation advice.

Is it better to go live on YouTube from a phone or a webcam?

Choose mobile for an on-location stream

A phone or tablet is the natural choice when you need to move around or show something where it is happening. The trade-off is eligibility: YouTube’s mobile guidance currently specifies at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported device. The stated minimums are Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. These are platform rules that can change, so check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements before planning a broadcast.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Choose a computer webcam for a simple fixed shot

If you are seated at a computer and want a direct camera stream without a more elaborate production, YouTube’s webcam method is the simpler fit. It requires a computer with a webcam. A USB webcam for YouTube live streaming is optional if your computer does not have a suitable built-in camera; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to start.

Choose an encoder for screen capture or a more involved production

An encoder is the relevant route when your content is a game, computer screen, or production involving overlays, external microphones or cameras, or several audio/video sources. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers connecting and configuring peripherals and recommends preparing and checking the stream before an event, including monitoring audio and video.

What do I need to live stream on YouTube from mobile?

Before choosing the phone route, check each requirement against your channel and device:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your channel has at least 50 subscribers.
  • Your channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.

  • Your device meets YouTube’s stated minimum: Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+.

For any route, YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Does vertical or horizontal format change which method I should use?

Yes, but orientation is a separate decision from device choice. YouTube says vertical live streams display full-screen on mobile and may be discovered in the Shorts feed. Its feature comparison lists some differences between vertical and horizontal live streams:

Feature in YouTube’s guide Horizontal live Vertical live
Discoverable and scrollable in the Shorts feed No Yes
Clickable links in chat and channel description Yes No
Live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls Yes No
4K bitrate broadcast on the YouTube app Yes No
Premieres and Live Redirect Yes No
Memberships and gifted memberships Yes Yes

These are the feature distinctions in YouTube’s live-streaming guide; availability can depend on the stream setup and YouTube’s current product behavior. Do not assume that choosing a phone automatically means a vertical stream, or that a computer prevents one.

Can I stream vertically and horizontally at the same time?

YouTube says Live Control Room can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together by default. The vertical version is center-cropped unless you choose another layout; you can adjust vertical layout options in the editing canvas. Consider whether a center crop will keep the subject and important on-screen details in frame.

If you use a third-party encoder for dual streaming, YouTube’s guidance says to choose RTMP(S), select the second stream key for the vertical stream, match each format and its content to the corresponding key, and start the stream from Studio. You cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started. Check the current YouTube instructions for dual streaming before configuring the keys.

Which option should you pick?

  • Pick mobile for a quick, on-location stream if your channel and device meet YouTube’s mobile requirements.
  • Pick webcam for a simple, stationary computer stream where a direct camera feed is enough.
  • Pick an encoder when you need screen capture, gameplay, overlays, connected production hardware, or more control over a multi-source broadcast.

Whichever you choose, do a test stream before an important event. Confirm that the camera or screen, audio, framing, and chosen orientation work as intended.
