Web Server Security Checklist for Linux VPS Owners in 2026

A layered 2026 checklist for hardening a Linux VPS web server, limiting exposure, detecting compromise, and proving you can recover.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A secure Linux VPS is built in layers: inventory and recovery access, timely patching, strong identities, a deny-by-default firewall, correctly configured TLS and web services, confinement, monitoring, and tested backups. Complete the checklist below before exposing a new site, then repeat the verification and maintenance steps throughout the server’s life.

What this checklist covers

This guide is for self-managed Debian- or Ubuntu-style Linux VPS instances running web services. It addresses the operating system, remote administration, network exposure, web-server integration, detection, and recovery. It is not a penetration test or a substitute for application, PHP, container, database, provider, or regulatory-specific hardening.

A public VPS is continuously exposed to automated scans and authentication attempts. Other realistic failure modes include an unpatched service or dependency, a stolen SSH key or application secret, a firewall or Docker publishing mistake, privilege escalation after an application compromise, deletion or encryption of reachable backups, and an administrator who removes local evidence. The controls below target different failure modes; no single setting provides complete protection.

1. Inventory the server before changing it

Record the current state so that you can recognize drift and recover from a bad change. Save the inventory somewhere independent of the VPS account.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Capture the technical baseline

  • Distribution, release, kernel version, public IP addresses, DNS names, and provider-level firewall rules.
  • Listening sockets and owning processes. On a systemd Linux host, ss -tulpn gives a useful first view.
  • Web-server, runtime, application, database, container, and operating-system package versions.
  • Enabled systemd services, scheduled jobs, containers, mounted volumes, upload directories, and data paths.
  • All privileged accounts, their sudo permissions, SSH keys, service users, and locations of secrets.

Keep an out-of-band route

Open and test the provider’s web console, serial console, or other out-of-band access before editing SSH or firewall policy. Keep a second administrative session open while testing a new SSH key or firewall rule. If a change blocks network access, use the console to restore the last known-good configuration rather than repeatedly guessing over SSH.

2. Patch the operating system and define vulnerability response

Run normal package updates before installing the web stack, then make update behavior observable. On supported Ubuntu installations, security updates are installed automatically by default after 24 hours and normal updates after seven days, according to Ubuntu’s security documentation dated July 3, 2026. Do not assume that default behavior covers third-party repositories or application dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply and verify updates

  1. Refresh package metadata and apply available updates using your distribution’s supported package manager, such as sudo apt update followed by sudo apt full-upgrade on Ubuntu or Debian.
  2. Confirm that unattended-upgrades is installed, enabled, and restricted to repositories you trust. Explicitly review any third-party origin before allowing it to update production code.
  3. Inspect /var/log/unattended-upgrades after enabling automation. Alert when a run fails, a package is held back, or the expected update record is missing.
  4. Check whether a reboot is required after kernel or core-library updates. Automatic rebooting is configurable, but Ubuntu notes that it can be disruptive; schedule it within the application’s availability window and verify service health afterward.

Track security notices

Use Ubuntu Security Notices and the Ubuntu CVE Tracker to identify affected packages and released fixes. Record the decision for each high-impact vulnerability: update immediately, apply a documented mitigation, isolate the service, or accept the risk for a stated period. A maintenance policy should name an owner and an escalation path rather than relying on an administrator remembering to check manually.

Understand support coverage

Ubuntu coverage What it provides Qualification
Standard Ubuntu LTS Five years of security support for packages in the Main repository Canonical statement last updated April 29, 2026; it does not automatically cover every Universe package or third-party source.
Ubuntu Pro Up to ten years of support, including fixes for medium-, high-, and critical-severity vulnerabilities in Universe Coverage depends on enrollment and the applicable Ubuntu Pro terms; verify that the instance is attached and receiving updates.

3. Create least-privilege identities and harden SSH

Ubuntu’s server guidance recommends named, non-root accounts, OpenSSH, and least privilege. The practical minimum for an exposed VPS is a named administrative account, a tested SSH key, disabled direct root login, and disabled SSH password authentication once recovery access is confirmed.

Build a safe transition

  1. Create a named account for each administrator and grant only the sudo permissions needed for the role. Avoid sharing one account because it destroys individual audit trails.
  2. From a separate local terminal, install each administrator’s public key and test a new SSH session before changing the existing session.
  3. Confirm that the new account can perform required administrative tasks with sudo and that the provider console remains available.
  4. Edit the OpenSSH server configuration to disable direct root login and password authentication. Validate the configuration before restarting or reloading the service, and keep the original session open until the second session succeeds.
  5. Restrict SSH at both the provider firewall and the host firewall to a trusted source range or VPN when feasible. A nonstandard SSH port can reduce background noise, but it is not an authentication or patching control.

Remove unused keys and accounts promptly. Review sudoers changes as privileged events and alert on unexpected additions.

4. Apply a deny-by-default firewall policy

Use a default-deny policy and allow only ports required by the documented design. Ubuntu commonly uses UFW as a wrapper around the host firewall; provider-level rules should enforce the same intent before traffic reaches the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical exposure decisions

Traffic Typical policy Decision point
HTTP and HTTPS Allow only when the service is intentionally public; redirect HTTP to HTTPS where appropriate. Every public hostname needs a certificate and an owner for renewal.
SSH Allow from an administration range or VPN, not the entire Internet, whenever practical. Keep provider-console access in case a rule is wrong.
DNS, monitoring, or VPN Allow only when the VPS actually provides that function. Document the source ranges and expected daemon.
Databases, metrics, Docker APIs, and admin panels Keep private by default. If public exposure is unavoidable, document the design and compensating controls.

After installing Nginx, Apache, containers, or monitoring agents, rerun the listening-socket inventory. Container publishing can silently create a new public path even when the host service list looks unchanged. Remove unused packages and services rather than merely hiding them behind a rule.

5. Configure the web server and TLS for the actual stack

Protect every public hostname

TLS provides privacy, integrity, and authenticity. Obtain a certificate for every public hostname, redirect HTTP to HTTPS where the application permits, automate renewal, and monitor the expiration window. Let’s Encrypt is documented by Ubuntu as an option for Internet-facing servers; whichever certificate authority you use, test renewal before the first certificate is close to expiring.

Review web-server behavior

Do not copy a generic Nginx or Apache snippet without checking the installed version and application architecture. Review server tokens, request and header limits, upload size and storage, directory listing, proxy headers, error handling, timeout values, and file permissions against the real workload. Ensure that secrets and configuration files are outside the document root and that writable directories are narrowly scoped.

Separate service privileges

Run the web server, application runtime, workers, and scheduled jobs under separate service users where practical. Give each process access only to the directories and sockets it needs. A web-server compromise should not automatically grant database administration, access to unrelated sites, or write access to backup repositories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application, PHP, container, and database hardening are separate workstreams. The operating-system checklist cannot establish safe framework settings, dependency policy, container isolation, database authorization, or secure application code.

6. Use confinement and reduce the attack surface

Keep AppArmor enabled where supported and review profiles for the web server, SSH service, and application processes. Ubuntu’s Security Guide includes service-specific benchmark areas for Apache, Nginx, and OpenSSH; profiles should be tested in the application’s normal and failure paths so that denials are understood rather than blindly disabled.

Remove avoidable risk

  • Uninstall packages and disable services that the inventory shows are not required.
  • Do not download untrusted .deb files or bypass the distribution’s signature and repository controls.
  • Do not paste dangerous sysctl values from an unrelated hardening article. Validate each kernel setting against the workload, kernel version, and recovery plan.
  • Review file ownership, executable permissions, setuid binaries, and writable paths used by the application.

Ubuntu’s hardening guidance specifically identifies unnecessary open ports, disabling AppArmor, dangerous sysctls, and untrusted package downloads as common mistakes.

7. Make logs and alerts independent of the VPS

Retain authentication, sudo, firewall, web access and error, package, and application logs. Forward important records to an independent logging destination because an administrator-level attacker can delete or alter local evidence.

Alert on events that require a decision

  • Repeated authentication failures, successful logins from unusual sources, and changes to SSH keys or sudo policy.
  • New listening ports, unexpected processes, file changes in application paths, or AppArmor denials.
  • Failed updates, missing update runs, certificate-expiry windows, and disk exhaustion.
  • Backup failures, stale backup timestamps, and failure to deliver a test alert.

Fail2ban or another rate-control tool can be useful when its service and threat model justify it, but it is not a universal substitute for key-based authentication, patching, and network restriction. Tune bans so that an administrator cannot lock out the only recovery path.

8. Back up for rebuild, not just for deletion

Back up application data, configuration, databases, certificates and keys under a documented key-management plan, plus the metadata required to rebuild the VPS. Keep at least one copy independent of the VPS account. A backup reachable with the same administrator credentials can be deleted or encrypted during the same incident.

Run a restore drill

  1. Choose a clean recovery environment and restore a recent backup without overwriting production.
  2. Record restore duration, data completeness, required packages, service users, ownership and permission fixes, and any missing environment variables or secrets.
  3. Verify that the application starts, database consistency checks pass, certificates can be installed safely, and logs and alerts resume.
  4. Document the point at which DNS can be changed and HTTPS can be returned to service.

A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Production operations should retain dated restore evidence and compare the result with the required recovery-time and recovery-point objectives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Verify the baseline after every material change

Use a repeatable post-change checklist rather than relying on visual inspection:

  • Expected listening ports match the design at both provider and host firewalls.
  • SSH permits tested keys, rejects disabled methods, and preserves a working console route.
  • Package status is current, update logs are present, and any required reboot has been completed and verified.
  • TLS certificates are valid for every hostname, renewal succeeds in a safe test, and expiry alerts arrive.
  • AppArmor is enabled, denials are reviewed, and service users cannot write outside their intended paths.
  • Authentication, sudo, firewall, web, package, and application logs reach the independent destination.
  • Alerts are received by a person or team that can act.
  • Backups are fresh, independent, encrypted as required, and covered by recent restore evidence.

For formal assurance, Ubuntu Security Guide can audit and apply customized CIS Benchmark and DISA-STIG profiles. CIS benchmarks also provide a useful basis for infrastructure hardening, but a benchmark result is evidence of configuration checks, not proof that the application is secure.

10. Operate the checklist on a 2026 cadence

When Tasks
At deployment Complete inventory, named accounts, SSH-key testing, firewall rules, TLS, logging, alerting, and independent backup setup.
Daily Inspect update results, failed jobs, alerts, disk capacity, and backup status.
Weekly Review exposed services, authentication events, certificate dates, AppArmor denials, and backup freshness.
Monthly and after material changes Run a restore test or recovery rehearsal, review package and service drift, recheck provider rules and containers, and rerun the security baseline.

Coordinate kernel and security reboots with the application’s availability requirement. If automatic reboots are enabled, define maintenance windows, health checks, and a rollback path for services that fail to return.

Choose controls according to exposure and impact

Situation Practical emphasis
Public site with low impact Still require keys, patching, HTTPS, least-privilege services, firewall rules, and a recoverable backup; keep the process simple enough to maintain.
Production service with availability objectives Add independent logs and alerts, tested restores, documented reboot windows, certificate monitoring, and a defined rebuild procedure.
Private or VPN-only administration Restrict SSH and management endpoints to the VPN or trusted ranges, while keeping public application ports limited to the documented need.
Formal assurance requirement Map controls to CIS or DISA-STIG profiles with Ubuntu Security Guide, retain audit evidence, and complete separate application and provider reviews.
