Web Scraping vs. Retailer APIs and Product Feeds: Which Should You Use?

The right product-data route depends on authorization, field coverage, update timing, downstream rights, and maintenance—not on a universal winner.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an authorized retailer API when it provides the fields and update behavior you need; use a product feed when a provider can deliver a controlled bulk catalog on a workable schedule. Scrape pages only when structured access is unavailable or insufficient, the pages expose the needed data, and collection and reuse are permitted. The right choice depends on the specific source, your data requirements, your rights to use the data, and the work required to keep the pipeline reliable.

First, check what “retailer API” means for your project

An API is not automatically a public window into a retailer’s entire catalog. Many retailer APIs are designed for the retailer’s own account holders, suppliers, or authorized solution providers to manage that party’s products. Their existence does not imply permission to retrieve a competitor’s listings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, Google’s Merchant API is for managing products, inventory, and performance information associated with a Merchant Center account. It requires a Merchant Center account with appropriate permissions and a linked Google Cloud project. Walmart’s cited Item Management API is intended for suppliers, drop ship vendors, and internal teams; its documented functions include retrieving item taxonomy and field specifications, submitting item setup feeds, checking feed status, and browsing an item catalog. Its guide requires OAuth-based access tokens. These are source-specific examples, not a description of every API from either company.

Compare the routes against your actual requirements

Decision factor API Product feed Web scraping
Access and eligibility Confirm that you qualify, have the required account or relationship, and can obtain the necessary scopes and credentials. Google’s Merchant API requires account permissions and a linked Cloud project; Walmart’s cited supplier APIs require credentials and OAuth tokens. Confirm who can provide the feed, which catalog it covers, and what terms govern its use. Confirm the source’s terms and applicable rules for collection and downstream use. Public visibility alone does not establish permission to collect, retain, or redistribute data.
Field coverage and completeness Check the documented fields, products, variants, regions, inventory, and identifiers available to your account. Ask whether it covers the full catalog and includes the attributes your application needs. A feed may include data, such as store-level inventory, that is not on public pages. Pages expose only the information presented there, and a crawler may fail to discover every product. Google says its own crawling does not guarantee that all products will be found.
Freshness and timing Check update behavior, quotas, and any documented latency or notification options; do not assume an API response means the source updates immediately. Check submission cadence, processing time, and how updates and errors are handled. Amazon says its Selling Partner feeds may take up to eight hours to process under high load and are processed sequentially. Measure how often you can revisit pages and how quickly you detect changes. Google says it does not guarantee how long changes will take to be processed through crawling.
Schema and change handling Review field definitions, versioning, error reporting, and deprecation notices. Google’s Merchant API is modular and succeeded Content API for Shopping. Review file formats, schemas, validation rules, and format deprecations before building around them. Page markup and presentation can change; plan to detect parser failures and missing fields rather than assuming the page structure will remain stable.
Implementation and upkeep Plan for authentication, request limits, retries, normalization, and monitoring according to the particular API. Plan for transfer, parsing, validation, update reconciliation, and processing schedules. Plan for discovery, parsing, retries, page changes, and coverage checks. Whether this is less work than an API or feed depends on the source and the required coverage.
Cost and downstream rights Check source-specific fees, terms, and permitted storage, display, sharing, or commercial use. Check provider charges, if any, and the terms covering retention and reuse. Check applicable site terms and rules for your jurisdiction and intended use, including whether you may retain or redistribute what you collect. There is no universal cost or legal conclusion that applies to every source.

The table is a checklist, not a claim that one method is always more complete, faster, cheaper, or easier. The cited platform documentation does not establish a general cost comparison or a universal reliability ranking.

When an API is the best fit

Choose an API when the data owner authorizes your use, the interface exposes the required fields, and its update and operational behavior fit your needs. APIs provide structured, documented operations; depending on the service, they may support retrieving or changing data, checking status, or responding to notifications. Verify the actual functions available to your account rather than assuming every API offers all of them.

Google’s Merchant API supports programmatic product and inventory management for a Merchant Center account and can manage multiple data sources. It is the current successor to Content API for Shopping. Google Search Central’s product-data guidance says API updates can be useful for immediate product or stock updates; this is guidance about those Google workflows, not a general latency guarantee for APIs.

When a feed is the best fit

Choose a feed when an authorized provider can supply a machine-readable catalog in bulk and the delivery and processing schedule is acceptable. Feeds are often useful for controlled catalog transfer or scheduled updates, but a feed is a delivery method—not necessarily a live view of current stock. Confirm whether updates are full replacements or incremental changes, how omissions are treated, and how validation failures are reported.

Google’s product-data guidance describes periodically uploaded files as an option for larger catalogs or frequently changing data, and notes that feeds can share information not present on the public site. It also suggests that smaller, less frequently updated sites may start with an automated feed built from crawled content. The same guidance discusses Content API for immediate updates; Google’s current Merchant API documentation identifies Merchant API as its successor.

Feed processing can have its own delay. Amazon’s Selling Partner Feeds API documentation says seller feeds may take up to eight hours to process under high-load conditions and are processed sequentially. Separately, Amazon states that, starting July 31, 2025, its Feeds API no longer supports legacy XML and flat-file listing feeds for pricing, inventory, relationships, and images. These are Amazon-specific details, not general properties of feeds.

When scraping is reasonable—and what it cannot promise

Scraping may be a practical source-specific fallback or supplement when structured access is not available or does not cover the fields you need, and the information is exposed on pages you are permitted to collect. It can be a reasonable starting point for a small, slowly changing catalog, but the convenience of reading public pages does not ensure a complete catalog, predictable refreshes, or stable parsing.

  • Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)

Google’s guidance says crawling may not find all products and does not guarantee when changes will be processed. Google Search Central states: “Google does not guarantee how long it takes before changes on your site will be processed through crawling.” That statement concerns Google’s crawling, rather than a measured result for every independent crawler, but it illustrates why coverage and freshness should be tested rather than assumed.

Permission and reuse depend on the source, jurisdiction, and intended purpose. The Japan Fair Trade Commission Competition Policy Research Center paper describes web pages, market-intelligence providers, and API-accessible companies as different data sources used in research, and notes that some platforms prohibit or limit scraping. Walmart’s API terms separately restrict distribution, commercial exploitation, and certain competitive uses of its API materials and data. Google Merchant Center policy bars scraped content copied from another source without added value in the context of Merchant Center listings. None of these examples determines the legality of scraping every site or using collected data for every purpose.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Specify the data and use. List the required attributes, products and variants, retailer regions, historical depth, refresh interval, and whether you need to retain, display, share, or redistribute the results.
  2. Ask the data owner about authorized access. Verify eligibility, fields, scopes, quotas, latency, schema, costs, intended purposes, and retention or redistribution terms. Do this for each source; an API available to a seller or supplier may not be available for competitor research.
  3. Choose a feed for bulk delivery when its cadence works. Confirm catalog coverage, update semantics, processing delays, and how you will handle rejected or incomplete submissions.
  4. Choose an API for scoped operations when it fits. Confirm which reads, updates, status checks, or notifications the authorized interface actually supports, along with authentication and request limits.
  5. Use scraping only for permitted gaps. Check the applicable source terms and rules for the jurisdiction and your intended use. Limit the crawl to pages and fields that solve a defined coverage need rather than assuming public pages are a complete data source.
  6. Pilot the options before scaling. On a representative product sample, record match rate, missing-field rate, freshness lag, update failures, schema changes, and engineering time spent maintaining each route. These measurements help compare your particular sources; they are not universal performance benchmarks.

Hybrid pipelines can be the sensible answer

These methods are not mutually exclusive. A project might use an authorized API or feed as its primary source, then crawl a limited set of permitted pages to fill specific gaps. Keep the origin, retrieval time, and method for each field so you can identify stale or conflicting values. If sources disagree, define which authorized source is authoritative for that attribute instead of silently choosing whichever value arrived last.

Revisit the choice when access terms, schemas, formats, or eligibility change. Google’s Merchant API documentation identifies it as the successor to Content API for Shopping; Amazon’s documented feed-format cutoff shows why a previously working integration may need migration. Check current platform documentation and terms for the exact service and account you plan to use.
