Start with the retailers you need to track and the data your tracker must store. If an official or licensed API supplies the right prices, variants, history and freshness—and permits your intended use—it is usually the simpler collection interface to operate. Scraping can fill gaps when a suitable, permitted interface is unavailable, but then you own page parsing, change detection and recovery when collection breaks. Neither route is automatically right for every retailer or tracker.
Choose based on the data contract, not the technology label
A price tracker is only as useful as the observations behind its alerts and charts. Before choosing a collection method, write down what one observation must mean: which product and variant it refers to, whose price it records, when that price was valid, and whether the value is current, promotional, regional or historical.

An API returns resources according to a provider’s documented interface and contract. A scraper extracts information from web pages, which may be rendered dynamically or change without notice. An API can omit information visible on a product page; the fact that a field is visible does not make scraping that page permitted or reliable.
Questions to answer for each retailer and country
- Which price do you need: regular, sale, member-only, unit, or delivered price?
- Must the observation identify the seller, currency, product variant, pack size, promotion, or local store?
- Do you need current observations only, or a provider-supplied price history as well?
- How fresh must a price be for the alert or comparison you intend to show?
- Will you store, display, redistribute, or use the data commercially?
These requirements determine whether an interface is suitable. A field missing from an API response is not solved merely by switching to scraping: first verify the page data can be collected and used under the relevant terms.

How APIs and scraping differ in practice

This is a practical comparison, not a promise about every service or retailer. Provider documentation and vendor comparisons describe common trade-offs; the actual fields, terms and operating limits are product-specific.
Check coverage, history and locality before selecting a provider
An API’s existence does not establish that it covers every retailer, account type or downstream use. Check the current documentation and terms for eligibility, fields, request limits, billing units, history availability and rights to store or display the response. Compare the returned product identity and variant against the page or catalog item you intend to track.

Historical data also needs careful interpretation. Confirm whether the provider supplies past observations or only current offers, and what timestamps and coverage those records have. Do not infer a complete history from a current-price endpoint.
Locality is another common mismatch. WhichGrocer’s API terms describe coverage by retailer rather than by physical store or postcode, and distinguish catalogue prices from store-level availability. If your tracker promises a local price, validate the target source’s geographic granularity rather than assuming a retailer-wide record applies to a particular store.

Model every observation so stale prices are visible
Store observations as records, not just as a product’s latest price. A useful record includes a stable product identity, variant or pack, retailer, currency, observed price, promotion state, source, and a UTC observation timestamp. Preserve the source’s own update timestamp when it provides one; it may differ from the time your system fetched the response.
Keep “last observed” separate from “currently available.” Set a freshness threshold suited to the tracker: once the last observation exceeds it, mark the price stale or show its timestamp instead of presenting it as current. WhichGrocer’s API terms say: “If you display a price or promotion as current, it must come from a recent API response.” That is a condition in WhichGrocer’s terms, not a universal definition of “recent” for other services.

Build a collection workflow with checks and a fallback
- List targets and requirements. For each retailer and geography, identify an official API, feed, affiliate or product-data interface, or licensed third-party source. Check eligibility and the exact fields before designing around it.
- Review permitted use. Read the provider and retailer terms for quotas, automation, caching, display, retention and redistribution. retailerapi’s terms, marked “Last updated: 2026-05-09,” prohibit use that violates retailer terms and restrict how long price or availability fields may be cached without written consent. Recheck the live terms and limits before implementation.
- Define freshness and polling. Choose an update target based on what the reader needs, then ensure the source’s refresh schedule and allowed request rate can meet it. More frequent collection is not automatically better if it creates stale-looking certainty, excessive load or a terms violation.
- Normalize and timestamp. Save the observation fields consistently, retain source timestamps, and record which interface produced each record.
- Validate before alerting. Detect missing prices, implausible jumps, unexpected currency changes, variant mismatches, stale timestamps and provider errors. Do not silently treat a broken feed as a genuine price movement.
- Plan a stop or fallback. For scraping, design for respectful, permitted collection and stop or switch sources if access is disallowed or the page cannot be parsed reliably. Proxy rotation or anti-bot bypass is not a substitute for permission.
- Compare total cost at equivalent output. Account for the provider’s billing unit and included results; for scraping, include rendering, retries, engineering and any managed service fees. One API request is not necessarily equivalent to one scraped page.
When scraping makes sense—and when it does not
Scraping can be worth evaluating when no suitable permitted interface provides the required fields and the page presents them consistently enough to validate. Its cost includes ongoing parser maintenance, change detection and operational monitoring, not just the initial extraction code.

Do not assume that scraping can supply store-level or historical information simply because a page displays a price. The displayed value may vary by region, account, seller or selected variant, and a page snapshot does not by itself establish a reliable price history.

Price alerts and statistical price indexes are different jobs
For a consumer alert tracker, the practical aim may be to tell a user that a particular item’s observed price changed. The International Monetary Fund’s manual on web scraping notes that scraping can increase the number and frequency of products priced, while also identifying limits when expenditure information is absent, including implications for weighting and index methods. Those statistical limitations matter when constructing price indexes; they do not by themselves invalidate a product-level alert.
