Choose based on what your target pages require: start with Scrapy for recurring crawls of mostly static HTML, Playwright when data appears only after JavaScript or interaction, and a hosted scraping API when you prefer not to operate the execution infrastructure yourself. These tools solve different problems, so validate finalists on the same real pages and fields rather than looking for a universal winner.
Quick comparison: which web scraping tool should you use?
| Option | Best first fit | What it does well | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scrapy | Mostly static or directly request-accessible pages; recurring, multi-page Python crawls | Provides crawling structure, extraction, feed exports, and extension points | Your team builds and maintains the crawler and responds to target-site changes |
| Playwright | JavaScript-rendered pages or workflows requiring scrolling, clicking, or other browser actions | Runs pages in browser engines and supports browser interaction | Browser work uses more resources, and pagination and crawl orchestration typically need custom logic |
| Hosted scraping API | Teams that want a provider to operate the scraping service infrastructure | Can return results or datasets through an API; some services support asynchronous jobs and schedules | Support, output, limits, billing, and data handling vary by provider |
| ScreenshotNeo | Capturing a page as an image or PDF, rather than extracting structured records | One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; clean shots remove known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets | It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a general-purpose structured-data scraper |
This is a functional decision aid, not a scored benchmark. No shared-workload test establishes a universal speed or reliability winner.

What each tool category actually does
Scrapy: a crawler and extraction framework
Scrapy’s official overview describes it as an application framework for crawling websites and extracting structured data. It supports CSS selectors and XPath for HTML/XML, feed exports such as JSON, CSV, and XML, and extension through middleware, extensions, and pipelines. Its documented capabilities also include cookies and sessions, caching, robots.txt handling, and crawl-depth restriction. Those features make it a natural starting point when you need a controlled crawl and a data pipeline, not just a rendered page.

Playwright: browser automation
Playwright automates browsers, so the page can execute JavaScript and respond to actions such as clicks and scrolling. That makes it useful when the content you need is absent from the initial HTML response or revealed by a user-like interaction. It supports Chrome, Firefox, and WebKit, with APIs for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, and C#. It can navigate and extract data, but a full multi-page crawler still needs your own decisions about pagination, retries, data shape, and crawl boundaries.
#1 Best Overall
A vendor-authored comparison of Scrapy and Playwright also distinguishes Scrapy’s built-in crawl workflow from the custom navigation and pagination generally needed with browser automation. Treat that as a functional distinction, not evidence that one is faster across sites: Scrapy vs. Playwright comparison.
Hosted scraping APIs: provider-operated execution
A hosted scraping API lets your application request a scrape while the provider operates the service infrastructure. For example, Scrapy.io’s documentation describes discovering tools, running synchronous or asynchronous jobs, retrieving datasets, and scheduling recurring scrapes without hosting browsers or proxies yourself. This describes that service’s model, not a guarantee that every provider supports every target or workflow. Verify the exact product capabilities before relying on them.
ScreenshotNeo: for visual capture, not record extraction
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures; it is useful when the desired output is a visual page snapshot, but it is not a substitute for extracting structured fields into a dataset.

When Scrapy is the better starting point
- Your required content is present in the HTML returned by ordinary requests, or can be obtained without browser interaction.
- You need to visit many pages, follow links, restrict crawl depth, and export structured records.
- Your team is comfortable owning Python code, pipeline design, and maintenance as the target changes.
When Playwright is worth the browser cost
- Important content appears only after client-side JavaScript runs.
- You must scroll, click, select, or otherwise interact with the page to reveal the data.
- The workflow behaves like a user journey rather than a straightforward sequence of fetches.
Using a browser adds resource and operational costs relative to direct requests. If you only need data already available in HTML, first test whether a request-based approach can retrieve it; do not add browser complexity without a page behavior that requires it.
When to evaluate a hosted API
- You prefer a managed service over operating the browser or proxy infrastructure yourself.
- You have confirmed the service supports your target sites, required output, and workflow.
- You can accept vendor dependency and have checked limits, billing units, supported regions, and data handling against your requirements.
When the task is a screenshot
If the output is a rendered image or PDF rather than extracted fields, use a screenshot tool instead of building a scraper. ScreenshotNeo accepts options for full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicking or waiting for selectors, request blocking, cookies and headers, timezone and geolocation, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and usage reporting. Choose a scraper when the deliverable is data; choose a screenshot API when the deliverable is a visual record.
How to compare finalists fairly
- Make a representative URL set. Include ordinary pages and the difficult cases: JavaScript-rendered content, pagination, consent prompts, slow loads, or interaction-dependent fields, where they apply.
- Write down the fields and output you need. Define expected values and format so the comparison measures usable results, not just whether a page loaded.
- Run the same cases through each candidate. Keep URLs, fields, and acceptable completion criteria consistent. Record missing fields, failures, and the workarounds each option requires.
- Test failure handling and repeatability. Check behavior on timeouts and changed pages, and whether the tool provides the retries, logs, scheduling, or recovery steps your workflow needs.
- Estimate total operating cost at realistic volume. Include development and maintenance time for a self-hosted crawler or browser, as well as provider fees and limits for an API. Compare the actual billing unit, not a headline starting price.
- Review data and access requirements. Confirm where execution and data handling occur, who can access results, and whether your use is authorized under applicable terms and rules.
This same-workload trial is more useful than selecting on a general claim about speed or reliability; those outcomes depend on the target pages, implementation, and service being evaluated.

Permission, robots.txt, and responsible crawling
A tool choice does not grant permission to access or reuse a site’s data. Review applicable law, the site’s terms, privacy obligations, and published crawler rules for your use case. RFC 9309, the IETF Robots Exclusion Protocol standard published in September 2022, says: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” In other words, robots.txt communicates crawler rules but does not itself authorize access; an allow rule is not a legal permission, and a disallow rule alone does not settle every legal question. See RFC 9309.
If a site presents access controls, rate limits, bans, or CAPTCHAs, do not treat bypassing them as a routine scraping step. Respect authorization and site rules, reduce request load where appropriate, and consider an official API or licensed dataset where suitable. Applicable obligations depend on the facts and jurisdiction; this is not legal advice.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot rather than structured extraction, make one request with your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for the available parameters and response details.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000, with every feature on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a browser to scrape a JavaScript website?
Only if the data you need is missing from the initial response and requires page execution or interaction. Test the target page first; use Playwright when rendering or browser actions are necessary.
Best Value
Is Scrapy or Playwright faster?
There is no universal winner established here. Compare both against the same representative URLs, fields, failure cases, and realistic workload.
Can robots.txt authorize me to scrape a website?
No. RFC 9309 says robots.txt rules are not access authorization. Review the site’s terms and the legal and privacy obligations relevant to your use.
