Free SSL is common among paid web hosts, but it does not tell you how long a certificate lasts, which plans qualify, or what the hosting costs at renewal. The available 2026 comparisons do not establish seven directly comparable, plan-matched picks, so this guide focuses on the providers with specific published details and what to check before you buy.
What “free SSL” does—and does not—tell you
SSL certificates enable HTTPS connections between a website and its visitors. For a hosting shopper, the key question is not just whether a provider advertises free SSL, but which plan includes it and whether the offer has a stated duration or renewal condition. The examples below show why the phrase alone is not a complete plan specification.

Provider details worth comparing

How to choose a plan without being misled by the monthly price
Work out the cost over the commitment
Find the amount due at signup, the length of the introductory term, and the renewal price. A low monthly figure may depend on paying for a long first term, and renewal can be substantially higher. Tom’s Guide says its Bluehost shared-plan prices are based on a 36-month subscription and increase after the initial term; it also cautions that introductory hosting prices can rise significantly. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison.
Do not compare a first-year price directly with a 36-month introductory price or a renewal price. Compare the total payment for the same time period, then note what the service costs afterward. Promotions and checkout terms are volatile.

Check the practical limits for your site
SSL is only one part of the hosting decision. Compare website count, storage, backup frequency, migration help, support availability, and the control-panel or site-building experience. A plan that includes HTTPS but has too little storage or too few websites may not fit your needs. The provider comparisons list different combinations of storage, backups, migration, and site limits, so inspect the precise tier rather than relying on a brand-level claim.
Match management level to your needs
Beginner-oriented shared hosting can simplify setup for a small site, while managed WordPress plans may be a better fit if you want WordPress-specific management. More performance-oriented managed options can involve trade-offs: TechRadar describes Cloudways as lacking domain registration and email hosting, so you may need to obtain those separately. - FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
A quick pre-purchase check
- Open the provider’s current plan page and select the exact hosting type and tier you need.
- Confirm that SSL is included on that plan, how long the stated inclusion lasts, and whether setup is automatic.
- At checkout, record the amount due now, the commitment term, and the renewal rate; check any separate domain renewal terms.
- Check the plan’s site and storage limits, backups, migration options, and support details against your requirements.
- Save or review the order summary before paying, since a comparison-page offer may not reflect the current checkout terms.
Why this is not a definitive seven-provider ranking
The available 2026 material does not establish seven providers on equivalent plans, billing terms, and SSL conditions in one defined geography. Some figures come from provider-published comparisons, others from editorial reviews, and the cited pages do not fill every plan detail. That evidence supports a practical shortlist and a way to compare offers, but not a reliable claim that these are the seven best services in rank order.
For example, TechRadar’s 2026 comparisons characterize Namecheap as a low-cost shared-hosting option and Bluehost as beginner-focused, while also emphasizing the importance of renewal increases. Those descriptions can help frame a shortlist, but they do not substitute for checking the exact current offer that applies to your location and selected plan.
