Web Hosting Explained: What Beginners Need to Know

Web hosting stores or runs a website and delivers it to visitors. Learn how hosting, domains and DNS fit together, compare common hosting models, and choose a plan around your site's needs.

Web hosting is the service that stores a website or web application on servers and makes it available over the internet. A domain name is the address visitors use; DNS helps direct that address to the server; hosting supplies the files and computing services that deliver the site.

What is web hosting?

A website is made up of files and, in many cases, application code and supporting data. A hosting service provides the server infrastructure that stores or runs those components and sends the site to visitors. Hosting providers may also offer services such as backups, security features, and performance support, but the details vary by plan. AWS’s web hosting overview explains the basic service and common hosting models.

Hosting is not the same thing as owning a domain name. It is the service that makes the site’s content available when someone visits its address.

What is the difference between web hosting and a domain name?

A domain name, such as example.com, is a human-readable address. Hosting is the service that stores and serves the website. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates the domain into an IP address that internet-connected systems use to locate the hosted site. Cloudflare’s DNS concepts documentation describes this lookup role.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

A simple way to keep the terms straight is: the domain is the address, DNS is the lookup, and hosting is the online space and computing service that delivers the site. The analogy has limits: the domain does not contain the site’s files, and DNS does not host them.

Domain registration, DNS management, and hosting can be handled by separate companies, even if one company offers all three. Check which provider controls each service before changing settings or moving a site; the distinction is also covered in AWS’s explanation of domains and hosting.

How does web hosting work?

  1. The site is prepared. Its files, application code, and any required data are placed on a server or another hosting platform.
  2. The visitor enters a domain. Their device uses DNS to look up the domain and find the IP address associated with the destination.
  3. The request reaches the hosting service. The service returns the requested files, or runs the application and returns the result. A dynamic site may need server-side processing or a database in addition to its files.

The exact architecture depends on the site. A simple static site may consist of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files served directly, including through a content delivery network (CDN). AWS’s static website tutorial describes file-based hosting and notes that this approach can scale with traffic without conventional web servers. A dynamic website or application may require additional server, database, or application services. The word “website” alone does not determine which hosting setup is appropriate.

What are the types of web hosting services?

The main hosting labels describe how infrastructure and resources are allocated, but they do not guarantee a particular level of speed, security, price, or support. Plan details matter.

Type How it works Why a beginner might consider it Trade-offs
Shared Multiple sites use a server and share its resources. Can be a straightforward starting point for a small or new site. There is less control, and resource contention may affect performance. Features and upgrade costs vary by plan.
VPS A physical server is divided into virtual servers, giving each customer a more distinct environment. May suit a site that needs more control or customization as it grows. Setup and administration may require more technical knowledge unless the service is managed.
Dedicated One customer leases an entire physical server. Can fit demanding workloads or requirements for extensive control. Typically involves greater cost and technical responsibility; actual terms depend on the service.
Cloud Hosting uses cloud infrastructure; some architectures distribute workloads or scale resources. A broad category that can support different site sizes and designs. The label alone does not specify performance, price, or how much management the provider handles. Compare the service’s actual design.

These are broad categories, not promises about every provider’s implementation. AWS’s hosting overview describes the general distinctions; a plan’s resource limits, management and included features still need to be checked individually.

What is the difference between web hosting and cloud hosting?

Web hosting is the broad service: infrastructure that stores or runs a site and delivers it to visitors. Cloud hosting is one way to provide that service, using cloud infrastructure. Depending on its design, it may distribute workloads or scale resources, but “cloud” does not by itself tell you whether a plan will be faster, cheaper, or easier to manage than another option. Compare what resources the plan provides, how scaling works, and which operational tasks are yours.

How should you choose a hosting plan?

Start with what the site needs to run and how much infrastructure work you are willing to take on. The hosting label is only a starting point; verify the current plan terms for the specific service and region you intend to use.

  1. Match the plan to the site. A static set of pages, a content-management system, an online store, and a custom application may require different hosting capabilities. Identify whether the site needs server-side code, a database, or particular software before choosing.
  2. Check resources and growth limits. Review storage, processing capacity, memory, and bandwidth or data-transfer limits. Find out what happens if traffic or resource use rises. These limits and overage or upgrade terms are specific to each plan.
  3. Decide who will manage the server. Establish who is responsible for updates, configuration, backups, and troubleshooting. More control can also mean more work; managed service may shift some of that responsibility to the provider, so confirm exactly what is included.
  4. Read reliability and recovery terms. Look for any uptime commitment, backup schedule, restore process, and support response terms. Do not assume these are included simply because a plan is described as hosting.
  5. Verify HTTPS and security responsibilities. Check whether a certificate covers the domains you will use, how renewal works, and which security tasks remain yours. Cloudflare documents free Universal SSL for Cloudflare domains in its domain documentation; that is a Cloudflare-specific offering, not a guarantee that every host or domain includes a certificate.
  6. Compare total cost and portability. Check the renewal price, add-ons, upgrade charges, migration support, and how you can export your site’s files and data. Do not compare only an introductory price or assume moving a site will be automatic.

Which company handles each part of a website?

A site can use different providers for its domain registration, DNS, hosting, and HTTPS certificate. Before you sign up or make a change, identify the responsible company for each service and confirm how you can access its settings. That makes it easier to diagnose a problem: a domain renewal issue, a DNS lookup problem, an unavailable host, and an expired certificate have different causes and require action in different places.
