Weatherglass gives you a choice of sources
Weatherglass can use Open-Meteo, Met.no, or NOAA NWS, and the article says it can detect location automatically. Users can choose metric or imperial units. The account does not establish whether the extension supports mixing unit systems—for example, Celsius with miles per hour.

Open-Meteo is preconfigured in Weather Prime. WeatherAPI.com is offered as an alternative, but using it requires obtaining and entering an API key. The account does not describe a comparable choice of multiple sources beyond those two.
What are the practical drawbacks?
Weatherglass: a performance concern reported by the author
Sneddon reports that Weatherglass continued to use substantial CPU and GPU resources even when its interface was closed: “Even when the extension wasn’t open, it was pegging my CPU and GPU continuously in the background (thus using more power).” This is his experience, not a controlled benchmark or a claim that every installation behaves this way. If battery life or background resource use matters, treat the report as a reason to monitor the extension on your own system.

Weather Prime: displayed detail may be limited
In Sneddon’s use, the data shown was less comprehensive than the store screenshots suggested. He did not see a live radar map or astronomy details such as tides, moon phase, or sunset. Those are observations from his use, not proof that every version or configuration lacks those details.

What about GNOME compatibility?
Sneddon’s article reports that both extensions worked on GNOME 50, in the context of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. It describes support for GNOME 51 as uncertain—not as a confirmed incompatibility. This is a dated compatibility snapshot rather than a guarantee for later shell releases. Check each extension’s current listing before installing, particularly after a GNOME upgrade. Which extension should you try?
- Choose Weatherglass if animated conditions, hourly information, an 8-day forecast, and graphs for several weather measures matter most. Be prepared to assess resource use on your own machine.
- Choose Weather Prime if you prefer a chart-led dropdown and want to start with Open-Meteo without entering a key. If you need WeatherAPI.com, plan to obtain and configure its key.
- For either one, confirm current GNOME support in the extension listing; the reported GNOME 50 result does not settle compatibility with GNOME 51 or later.
