For following where rain is falling and where it is moving, weather radar is usually the more useful view. Satellite imagery is better for seeing clouds and the larger weather system around them. Use both when available: radar focuses on precipitation echoes, while satellite shows cloud and atmospheric context. Neither image is a direct, perfect measurement of rainfall at the ground.
What radar shows when you are tracking rain
National Weather Service Doppler radar sends out radio-wave pulses and detects energy returned by targets such as precipitation. The resulting echoes help show where precipitation is occurring and how its pattern is moving. Doppler and dual-polarization products can add information about motion and the characteristics of targets. Radar displays can also contain non-precipitation echoes; quality-control methods and dual-polarization capabilities help distinguish them. National Weather Service: Radar

For the practical question “Is precipitation approaching my area, and which way is it moving?”, radar is generally the most direct map view. It is not a guarantee that every displayed echo represents rain reaching the surface, or that every rain shower will be clearly detected.

Satellite imagery shows clouds and atmospheric conditions over a broad area, rather than mapping surface rain directly. The channel matters because each one answers a different question. National Weather Service: Satellite Images

| Satellite view | What it helps you see | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Visible | Clouds reflecting sunlight; useful for viewing cloud patterns in daylight. | Daylight-only. |
| Infrared | Cloud features detected from emitted heat; available day and night. | Shows cloud features, not a direct measurement of rain at the ground. |
| Water vapor | Moisture aloft and atmospheric circulation, providing context for where heavy rain may be possible. | Does not simply depict surface rainfall. |
Satellite can show thunderstorms developing in their earliest stages, before radar detects them, according to the National Weather Service. That is a sign to watch the evolving storm—not proof that rain is already reaching the ground. National Weather Service: Three types of satellite imagery
Which view should you use?
- To follow a rain area near you: Start with radar and watch the echoes’ location and movement.
- To understand the wider setup: Check satellite imagery for cloud development and atmospheric context.
- To watch for a storm developing: Satellite may reveal early cloud development; check radar to see whether precipitation echoes have appeared.
- At night: Visible satellite imagery is unavailable; infrared imagery still works, and radar remains useful for precipitation echoes.
If comparing weather apps or map products, check what layer is actually displayed, how often it updates, whether it distinguishes precipitation from other echoes, and whether it explains the limits of radar-derived rainfall. Update timing in an app is not necessarily the same as the radar’s scan interval.

Radar does not measure ground rainfall perfectly
Radar rainfall amounts are estimates. Reflectivity does not translate uniquely into rainfall at the surface, and the radar beam can overshoot shallow precipitation, especially when it is distant. Terrain blockage and calibration issues can also affect estimates. These limitations matter if you are interpreting an accumulation map: it is an estimate, not a rain gauge reading. The National Weather Service says the WSR-88D completes a precipitation-mode volume scan every 4–6 minutes, depending on the volume coverage pattern in use. That describes the radar scan interval, not a promised refresh rate for every third-party app or display. National Weather Service Birmingham: NWS Radar—How Does the Radar Work?

When a rain gauge is the better tool
If you need to know how much rain fell at one spot, a rain gauge measures surface rainfall there. The National Weather Service describes gauges as the standard for measuring surface rainfall; its Southeast River Forecast Center also describes a multi-sensor precipitation estimate that uses a radar mosaic calibrated with ground-based gauges. A home gauge can help you compare your local observation with a remote estimate, but it cannot show where a moving rain area is headed.
