Ordinary upgrading makes a weapon better within its existing design. Weapon Amplification takes an eligible, fully upgraded weapon to a fifth quality level and opens weapon-specific branches that can change how it behaves. In Frozen Trail 2.0, released October 8, 2026, the two systems use different stations and solve different problems: the Gunsmith handles standard progression, while the fully upgraded Research Workstation in your Outpost provides amplification.
That means a higher upgrade tier is not automatically an amplified weapon, and amplification is not just another removable attachment. The practical choice is whether you want stronger baseline characteristics or a new behavior and role for that gun.

The short version: two different progression systems
ARC Raiders uses three concepts that are easy to blur together:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ordinary upgrades are permanent improvements purchased through the Gunsmith. The numeral in a weapon’s name records its progress through the normal tier path, which reaches tier IV according to the weapon overview documentation.
- Amplification is an additional fifth quality level for eligible weapons. It becomes available through a fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost and offers weapon-specific branching abilities or enhancements.
- Mods are removable attachments. They alter a weapon while installed, but they are not the same thing as a permanent upgrade or an amplification branch.
Think of ordinary upgrading as refining the gun you already have. Think of amplification as choosing a direction for what that gun can become. A normal upgrade may improve characteristics; an amplification branch may change the way you use the weapon.

What ordinary weapon upgrading does
Where it happens
Standard upgrades are handled at the Gunsmith. Open the weapon overview, select the weapon, and use the Gunsmith upgrade path when materials and the required progression are available. The system is part of the weapon’s normal tier progression rather than a separate research-tree choice.
What changes
The improvement is tied to the weapon. The available documentation describes upgrading as a permanent way to improve a weapon’s characteristics, but it does not establish one universal stat increase for every gun. A higher tier therefore should not be read as “every number increases by the same amount.” Check the weapon’s previewed changes before committing materials.
How the tier label works
The numeral attached to a weapon name indicates ordinary upgrade progress through tier IV. Reaching that numeral does not, by itself, mean the weapon has been amplified. Amplification is a separate fifth quality level, not simply a different way of displaying tier IV.
What upgrading does not do
Ordinary upgrading does not turn a weapon into a different model, and it does not make a removable attachment permanent. It also does not grant access to every behavior associated with amplification. If your goal is a fundamentally different firing role or weapon behavior, continue to the Research Workstation system instead of spending materials only at the Gunsmith.
What Weapon Amplification adds
A fifth quality level
Embark’s official Frozen Trail First Look: Content highlights from October 8, published September 23, 2026, describes amplification as access to “a fifth quality level for a range of guns” through the fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost. This wording places amplification after the ordinary progression rather than inside the tier-I-to-tier-IV path.

Weapon-specific branches
Amplification is not presented as one global perk applied identically to every firearm. Its branches are tied to the individual weapon. Embark’s examples show the intended range:
- A Burletta can be configured as a fully automatic weapon.
- A Renegade can gain a scoped direction.
- A Rattler can receive an incendiary configuration with a 64-round magazine.
These examples illustrate behavior changes, not a universal list of effects for all guns. The official preview does not establish that every amplified weapon receives the same number of branches, the same categories of enhancement, or any particular numerical stat increase.
Initial rollout and roster caveat
Embark announced the system for an initial set of 15 weapons and said more were planned. That is the launch plan stated in the September 23 preview, not a verified roster count for every later build. Frozen Trail 2.0 is the relevant version context here, so check the current in-game weapon screen for eligibility rather than assuming that every weapon can be amplified.
Side-by-side comparison
| Comparison point | Ordinary upgrading | Weapon Amplification |
|---|---|---|
| Position in progression | Normal tier path, with the weapon numeral recording progress through tier IV | Additional fifth quality level |
| Primary purpose | Improve the weapon’s existing characteristics | Open branching abilities or enhancements that can alter behavior |
| Where you access it | Gunsmith | Fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost |
| Eligibility | Applies to most weapons described by the weapon overview | Only eligible weapons; the announced launch rollout covered 15 weapons |
| How choices are organized | Linear tier progression | Weapon-specific branches |
| Relationship to mods | Separate from removable attachments | Separate from removable attachments; amplification is a quality level and branch system |
| Reversibility | The upgrade is described as permanent | A universal reversal rule for every amplification choice has not been established in the available official documentation |
How to upgrade a weapon normally
- Open the weapon overview. Confirm the weapon name, current numeral, and the characteristics shown for the next available tier.
- Go to the Gunsmith upgrade option. This is the standard station for permanent weapon progression.
- Review the material requirement and resulting changes. The available sources do not provide a single cost schedule, and requirements can vary by weapon or tier. Do not assume that one gun’s cost or improvement applies to another.
- Apply the upgrade when the preview matches your plan. The normal path advances the weapon through its existing tier progression, up to the tier-IV stage represented by the numeral.
- Recheck the weapon overview. Confirm the new tier and characteristics before deciding whether the gun is ready for amplification or whether a removable mod better addresses your loadout.
If an upgrade button is unavailable, the cause may be insufficient materials, a progression requirement, or the weapon already being at the currently available tier. The sources do not document a single universal error message, so use the requirement text shown in your build rather than relying on a generic cost list.
How amplification fits after normal progression
- Develop the Outpost Research Workstation fully. Embark identifies a fully upgraded Research Workstation as the access point. A partially upgraded station is not described as sufficient.
- Check whether the weapon is eligible. Amplification was introduced for a defined group of weapons, not automatically for the entire arsenal. Eligibility can change as the game adds more weapons.
- Inspect the weapon-specific branches. Read what each branch changes in behavior or role. The Burletta, Renegade, and Rattler examples show why the choice is more consequential than a routine stat increase.
- Choose according to your intended use. A branch that changes firing mode, adds a scope, or introduces incendiary behavior can affect handling and tactics. Select the branch that fits your encounters rather than treating the highest-looking number as automatically best.
- Verify the resulting weapon state. Check the weapon overview after applying the choice. The official material reviewed here does not establish one universal way to undo every amplification decision, so treat a branch selection as a meaningful commitment until your current in-game documentation says otherwise.
Amplification is not a mod
The weapon overview distinguishes removable mods from permanent upgrades. A mod occupies the attachment system and can be removed or replaced according to the normal mod rules. Amplification belongs to the weapon’s quality and branch progression instead.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting a loadout:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- If removing an attachment restores the old behavior, you were dealing with a mod, not amplification.
- If the weapon’s quality or branch state changed after using the Research Workstation, that is amplification, not an attachment swap.
- If the Gunsmith changed the weapon’s tier numeral or baseline characteristics, that is ordinary upgrading.
Do not count a removable scope, magazine, or other attachment as evidence that a weapon has been amplified. Conversely, do not expect an amplification branch to appear in the removable-mod slots.
The Anvil Splitter exception in Frozen Trail 2.0
Frozen Trail 2.0 introduced a specific change that makes the upgrade/mod boundary especially important for the Anvil family.
What changed
- The Anvil Splitter is no longer usable as an Anvil mod.
- It is now an improved upgrade option for the Amplified Anvil.
- The update removed the Anvil’s Tech Mod slot.
- Spare Splitters can be sold or recycled into Amplified Fragments, which are used to repair amplified weapons.
Why this matters
Before Frozen Trail 2.0, a player could reasonably think of a Splitter as an attachment choice. In the current version context, that interpretation is outdated. The Splitter’s role was moved into the amplified Anvil’s upgrade path, while the old Tech Mod slot was removed. If an older guide tells you to equip an Anvil Splitter as a Tech Mod, it does not describe the 2.0 system.
This is a version-specific exception, not proof that every mod has become an amplification branch. Keep checking the weapon’s current overview and station requirements when an update changes an item’s function.

Which system should you use?
Choose ordinary upgrading when you need dependable baseline improvement
- You are still below the weapon’s normal tier-IV progression.
- You want the characteristics shown in the Gunsmith preview without changing the gun’s identity.
- You have a familiar build and need a straightforward improvement rather than a new firing role.
- The weapon is not in the current amplification-eligible group.
Choose amplification when you want a different role
- The weapon is eligible and your Outpost Research Workstation is fully upgraded.
- You are willing to compare branches rather than accept a single linear stat increase.
- You want behavior such as automatic fire, a scoped configuration, or incendiary functionality, as illustrated by Embark’s examples.
- You have considered how the branch will interact with your tactics, ammunition use, range preference, and other attachments.
Use a mod when you want a reversible loadout adjustment
- You are testing a sight, magazine, or other attachment.
- You want to change the setup between raids without changing the weapon’s permanent progression.
- Your problem is equipment fit rather than the weapon’s underlying behavior.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Tier IV means amplified.”
Correction: Tier IV is the end of the ordinary numeral-based progression described for the weapon. Amplification is the separate fifth quality level accessed through the Research Workstation.
“Amplification is just a bigger stat bonus.”
Correction: The defining feature is branching, weapon-specific behavior. Some branches may include enhancements, but the official examples emphasize changes such as automatic fire, a scope, or incendiary behavior.
“Any weapon can use the system.”
Correction: The launch announcement covered 15 weapons, with more planned. Confirm eligibility on the weapon itself.
“A mod and a permanent upgrade are interchangeable.”
Correction: Mods are removable attachments; Gunsmith upgrades and amplification belong to permanent or quality progression systems. The Anvil Splitter’s 2.0 reclassification demonstrates why item descriptions and current patch notes matter.

What is and is not established about costs and permanence
No universal material costs, repair prices, or branch-reset policy are established in the official preview and 2.0 notes summarized here. Costs can therefore not be responsibly presented as fixed numbers. Use the live requirement shown at the Gunsmith or Research Workstation for your weapon and build.
The ordinary upgrade is explicitly described as permanent. Amplification is described as a fifth quality level with branching abilities, but the available official material does not say that every branch is permanently irreversible or that every weapon follows the same reset rules. That is why the safe decision process is to inspect the branch description first and confirm any reset option in the current interface.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the weapon below tier IV? If yes, evaluate the Gunsmith upgrade first.
- Is the weapon in the current amplification-eligible group? If not, amplification is not an option for it yet.
- Is the Outpost Research Workstation fully upgraded? If not, complete that prerequisite before expecting the fifth quality level.
- Do you want better existing characteristics or a different behavior? The first points to upgrading; the second points to amplification.
- Are you actually trying to solve an attachment problem? If so, inspect removable mods instead.
- Is the weapon an Anvil affected by Frozen Trail 2.0? Recheck the Splitter and Tech Mod rules before using or selling components.
- Have you read the branch and any reset language in the current interface? Do that before committing resources.
Bottom line for Frozen Trail 2.0
In ARC Raiders, upgrading and amplification are sequential but distinct ideas. The Gunsmith’s ordinary path improves a weapon within its established design and records progress through tier IV. The fully upgraded Outpost Research Workstation unlocks amplification, a fifth quality level in which eligible weapons can branch into new behaviors. Mods remain removable attachments, with the Anvil Splitter’s reclassification as the notable Frozen Trail 2.0 exception.
Use the Gunsmith when you want a stronger version of the gun you already understand. Use amplification when the branch itself—such as the Burletta’s automatic configuration, the Renegade’s scoped direction, or the Rattler’s incendiary 64-round setup—is the reason to keep investing in that weapon.
