Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Keeping two copies of DOM helpers is not automatically a mistake—and the title’s claim that deduplicating them would break both cannot be verified without inspecting the project’s code and build. The key first question is whether both copies reach the same user in the same delivered page or bundle. If they do, sharing code may reduce duplicate downloads and processing; if they serve different runtimes or loading boundaries, merging them could introduce compatibility or deployment problems.
Source duplication is not the same as shipped duplication
Two helper files in a repository do not necessarily mean a browser downloads both. They may be used by separate entry points, built for different environments, or excluded from one another’s output. Performance concerns arise when duplicated modules are actually present in the same delivery.

Chrome’s guidance is to remove large duplicate JavaScript modules from bundles and inspect the bundle treemap to find them: Chrome for Developers: duplicated JavaScript. That advice is relevant only after confirming the helpers appear more than once in the delivered code. The project’s bundle contents and measurements are not established here.
Why sharing one helper can be useful
When independent page sections include their own utility code, a shared module can avoid downloading, parsing, and compiling repeated code. Shopify documents an import-map pattern in which sections refer to a common browser module: Shopify: JavaScript and stylesheet tags. This is an available pattern, not evidence that this project uses Shopify or import maps.

Build tools can also avoid repeated dependencies across bundles. webpack’s code-splitting guide describes entry dependencies and SplitChunksPlugin; Shopify also discusses aligning dependency versions when different versions cause the same library to ship twice: Shopify: reduce your bundle size. These approaches depend on the project’s build system and dependency graph.
Why two DOM helpers may not be interchangeable
The DOM API is standardized to support interoperable manipulation of document contents. That shared foundation does not make every project-specific wrapper equivalent: helpers can differ in behavior, side effects, loading assumptions, or the environment they target. The W3C describes the DOM as “a standardized, versatile view of a document’s contents”: W3C: Document Object Model.

Runtime matters too. A helper that accesses browser globals such as window cannot be assumed to work in Node.js, where that global is unavailable. MDN’s JavaScript modules guide explains environment-dependent module behavior: MDN: JavaScript modules. Whether this applies to either copy must be checked in the code; it is not established for this project.

How to decide safely
- Trace both copies to their consumers. Identify imports, entry points, and generated output. Establish whether the same page or user receives both, and use the Lighthouse treemap or the project’s bundle-analysis output to locate repeated modules and their size.
- Compare their assumptions. Check runtime targets, browser globals, load order, side effects, and build configuration. Similar names or use of the same DOM APIs do not prove identical behavior.
- Choose a remedy only if delivery is duplicated. If both copies serve the same runtime and appear in the same delivery, assess a shared module, import map, or bundler code splitting. Validate the change against every consuming entry point.
- Keep separate copies when boundaries justify them. If they serve different runtimes or independent delivery boundaries, document the constraint and weigh the duplicated bytes against the complexity of a shared abstraction.
For any proposed build option, compare duplicate bytes shipped, runtime compatibility, load order and deployment boundaries, and maintenance burden. General optimization guidance cannot establish why deduplicating these particular helpers would “break both”; that requires project-specific failure evidence.
