It is natural to respond socially to a system that speaks in a human-like way. That does not mean it has human feelings, empathy, judgment, or accountability. It is reasonable to use a friendly conversational interface when it helps—but not to mistake the feeling of being understood for proof that the system understands.
What does it mean to treat AI like a person?
The phrase covers two different things: interacting socially, such as saying “please” or chatting in a natural tone, and attributing human qualities to the system, such as believing it has feelings or understands your situation as a person would. The first can simply be a comfortable way to communicate. The second is a conclusion about the system’s capacities, and human-like conversation alone does not establish it.

Speech, first-person wording, and responsive conversation can make an AI seem more human. Those cues shape how people perceive it; they are not evidence of an inner emotional life or human social understanding.

A 2024 Google Research experiment with 2,165 U.S. participants aged 18–90 tested interface modality and grammatical person. Participants who interacted with an LLM through speech plus text attributed more human-like qualities to it and rated its information as more accurate than participants in a text-only condition. These were ratings of perceived accuracy, not measurements showing that the system’s answers were actually more accurate. Google Research describes the experiment and its findings.
#1 Best Overall
In one context in the same experiment, first-person “I” wording increased perceived information accuracy and reduced perceived risk. That result does not show that first-person language has the same effect in every product or situation. It does illustrate why a fluent, personable interface can influence confidence independently of whether an answer is correct.
Can AI sound empathetic without feeling empathy?
Yes. A 2024 review distinguishes convincing empathetic language from actual empathy or social understanding. A language model may produce a response that resembles what a supportive person might say; that performance does not establish that it feels concern, grasps your experience as a person would, or can take responsibility for what follows. The review discusses this distinction.

That difference matters most when the conversation concerns a sensitive or consequential decision. Warmth can make interaction easier, but it is not a substitute for checking important claims or seeking help from a qualified person when the stakes call for it.
Does getting attached to a chatbot harm relationships?
The available evidence does not support a blanket claim that companion chatbots damage relationships, nor does it show that they are proven replacements for human connection. In a 2025 randomized study, 183 participants were assigned to use a companion chatbot or play word games for at least 10 minutes a day over 21 consecutive days. The study found no statistically significant average effect on social health or relationships across that period. Participants who wanted more social connection anthropomorphized the chatbot more, and those who anthropomorphized it more reported greater relationship impacts. The study’s abstract and methods summary are available from AAAI/ACM AIES.
This is a bounded result: it describes the study’s participants and a three-week intervention, not every user, product, or longer-term pattern. It also distinguishes an average result from individual variation. The study does not establish that anthropomorphism caused the reported relationship impacts.
How should you interact with AI?
You do not need to avoid polite language or force yourself to speak unnaturally. The useful distinction is between adopting a convenient conversational style and assigning the system human capacities or authority it has not demonstrated.
- Use a natural tone if it helps. Courtesy and conversational phrasing are interface choices, not proof that the AI is a person.
- Calibrate confidence to the task. A warm or fluent answer can still be wrong. Verify consequential information rather than relying on how certain or caring it sounds.
- Keep the system’s identity clear. Treat its social cues as design features, not evidence of feelings, empathy, or human judgment.
- Notice your own response. If the interaction is affecting your choices or relationships, reflect on what the system can and cannot provide rather than assuming it understands you as a person would.
There is no established universal optimum for how human-like an AI interface should be. A 2025 meta-analysis examines social cues in text-based agents, but its findings have contextual and methodological limitations; they do not support a simple rule that human-like cues always help or always harm. The meta-analysis record describes this line of research.
What responsible human-friendly design should do
Human-friendly design can make tools easier to use. The important design question is whether warmth and conversational ease coexist with clear signals that the system is AI and has limits. A 2025 AAAI/ACM AIES student abstract warns that human-like features can contribute to misplaced trust and considers possible design interventions; it is a short contribution, not a comprehensive estimate of harm. The abstract is published by AAAI/ACM AIES.
