Short answer: Waze and Google Maps both combine live movement data, historical travel times, incident reports and other sources, but they do not publish the same routing rules. Waze says it compares current speeds with historical patterns and user reports; Google Maps says it uses anonymous phone-location data, past and present travel times, and licensed traffic and incident feeds. Neither service publishes a universal rerouting threshold or a current, controlled accuracy comparison.
The practical difference is especially important in Waze: its partner documentation says ordinary incident reports inform drivers but do not change routing, while a road-closure report does affect routing. Google Maps provides voice traffic alerts and can suggest a better route, but it does not say that every report triggers a recalculation. The sections below separate what each company documents from what remains unknown.

How Waze builds its traffic picture
Live speed signals from Waze users
Waze says that drivers who keep the app open share real-time information. The service uses those device signals to calculate average speed and learn road layout, including roads and turn directions. A larger flow of active devices gives Waze more observations of what traffic is doing now, although the public documentation does not promise a minimum number of devices for a reliable estimate.

That data is not just a list of reported jams. Waze’s partner documentation describes an automatic slowdown calculation: the service compares the current speed on a road segment with that segment’s historical speed for the same time of day or week. It then checks the result against GPS signals and user reports. The resulting feed can contain both automatically detected jams and incidents submitted by users. See Get traffic data with the Waze Data Feed for the documented process.
Reports add context that speed alone cannot provide
Drivers can submit reports for traffic, crashes, hazards, blocked roads and weather-related problems. A speed drop might indicate a queue, but a report can explain why the queue exists or warn about a danger before a measurable slowdown spreads. Other Waze users can react to reports, giving the system additional feedback.
Waze describes two alert measures in its partner documentation. Reliability is based on factors such as user reactions and the reporter’s experience tier. Confidence reflects current driver reactions, including thumbs-up responses, “Not there” responses and comments. Those labels describe how Waze evaluates a report; they are not a guarantee that every displayed report has been independently verified by a human or an outside authority.

Why a Waze incident may not change your route
The distinction between an incident and a closure is central to Waze’s documented behavior. Its partner guide states: “Incidents are important for informing drivers of disruptions on the road, but they do NOT affect routing.” In other words, a crash, hazard or congestion report can appear on the map and generate information for drivers without being treated as a blocked link in the routing graph.

A closure is different because the road is represented as unavailable. Waze’s road-closure help page says reporting a closure immediately affects the reporting driver’s route and Waze avoids that road. The closure may become visible on the map after more Wazers report it, and it can be removed when users drive on the road again. That means the first driver’s route response and the broader map display are separate events.
How Google Maps builds its traffic picture
Anonymous location and travel-time data
Google says Maps uses anonymous location data from phones, when location data collection is enabled, to help identify traffic jams. It also says route travel times use location data from the past and present. Historical observations help establish what a road usually takes at a particular time; current observations indicate whether today’s traffic differs from that pattern.
Google also licenses traffic and incident data from partners, including governments, nonprofits, schools and businesses. The public explanation does not reveal the complete algorithm or the relative weight assigned to phone data, historical travel times and partner information. Consequently, it is not possible to infer a fixed “number of reports” or speed threshold from Google’s documentation. The inputs are described at Report wrong directions in Google Maps.
User reports and confirmation prompts
During navigation, Google Maps lets users submit reports. Other drivers may see a report as they approach the location, may hear an alert depending on their settings, and may be asked whether the incident is still present. Report categories and reporting controls vary by country and platform. A confirmation response is another signal about whether a reported event remains active; it is not proof that a report was checked by a traffic authority.

Alerts, route updates and rerouting are different actions
An alert is information, not a promise of a new route
A traffic alert tells you that conditions or an incident may affect the trip. It does not necessarily mean the app has recalculated your path. Waze’s incident rule makes this explicit: ordinary incidents can inform you without affecting routing. Google says Maps provides voice traffic alerts and can tell you when a better route is available, but it does not state that every report causes an automatic route change. Its navigation description is at Use navigation in Google Maps.
What can trigger a route change in practice
A route can change when the service’s live estimate makes another path preferable, when a road is treated as unavailable, or when you accept a suggested alternative. The companies do not publish one cross-region rule such as “reroute after five minutes of delay.” Traffic volume, road class, turn restrictions, map data, your destination and the alternatives available at that moment all affect the calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWaze’s documented closure behavior is the clearest special case: a closure report avoids the closed road for the reporting driver immediately. For other Waze incidents, the report may remain an advisory marker while the route continues. Google Maps’ public help describes a better-route notification rather than a guaranteed automatic switch for every incident.

Partner-feed timing is not the same as what a driver hears
Google Maps Content Partners says new incidents from the Waze feed should appear in Google Maps in about 15–25 minutes, while updates to existing feed closures may take one to two hours. Those are partner-feed processing estimates, not a universal promise about how quickly a consumer app will display an alert, recalculate a route or speak a warning. They also do not describe every traffic source used by either app. The timing caveat appears in Content requirements: specifications for sharing data.
Which app is more accurate or faster?
The official explanations do not establish a universal winner. They describe different data sources and product behaviors, but they do not provide a current, controlled, like-for-like benchmark of alert accuracy, detection speed or rerouting performance across regions. No date-attributed statistic in the cited documentation supports saying that Waze is always faster, that Google Maps is always more accurate, or that either app wins on every road.
Accuracy also has several meanings. A service might detect a slowdown quickly but misclassify its cause, show a correct incident that does not justify a detour, or offer a route that is mathematically shorter but less convenient. Sparse phone coverage, a newly opened road, a local event and an unreported closure can affect either service. The documented inputs explain why results can differ without proving that one product is generally superior.
Feature and availability limits to check before driving
- Connection: Waze says navigation needs an active data connection. A weak or lost connection can prevent fresh traffic information and route updates.
- Location settings: Google’s traffic model uses anonymous phone-location data when location data collection is on. Disabling location access can limit live positioning and related features.
- Country and region: Google says traffic alerts, reports and related features vary by country or region.
- Language and platform: Report types, voice behavior and controls can differ by language, phone platform, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and built-in vehicle systems.
- Vehicle support: Some in-car features depend on the vehicle or head-unit implementation, not only on the app account.
- Map freshness: A newly changed road, temporary restriction or private access rule may not yet be represented correctly, even if traffic sensors show movement.
Waze summarizes its supported navigation audience and connection requirement in About Waze. Google documents platform and regional caveats in its navigation and reporting help pages.

How to use the two apps for a particular trip
Before you start
- Enter the same origin, destination and departure time in both apps.
- Check that location permission, mobile data and any required vehicle connection are working.
- Look at the estimated arrival time, total distance, major highways and visible incident or closure markers rather than selecting solely by the shortest distance.
- Read the route notes aloud or review them while parked; do not operate the phone while driving.
While navigating
- Listen for voice traffic alerts and better-route notices. Google explicitly documents voice alerts for traffic, turns, lanes and a better route.
- In Waze, treat an incident marker as information unless the road is marked closed or the route visibly changes.
- If you encounter a genuine closure, use the app’s report control only when it is safe and legal to do so. Waze says a closure report affects the reporting driver’s route immediately.
- When an app proposes a detour, compare the new arrival time and road type with the route you are currently driving. A nominal time saving may not justify complex turns or an unfamiliar road.
- Keep following traffic law and signs. App guidance cannot override a police direction, temporary sign or physical barrier.
After the trip
If you want a personal comparison, repeat the same route at several times and in both directions. Record what each app displayed, when an alert arrived, whether a route changed and whether the reported condition was still present. This is useful for your commute, but it is not a controlled global accuracy test; traffic patterns and feature availability change by place and time.
Choosing between Waze and Google Maps
Waze may suit you when incident reporting is your priority
Waze puts a strong emphasis on driver-generated reports, reactions and real-time road observations. Its automatic slowdown comparison and closure handling can be useful when you want a traffic-focused view and are willing to keep an active data connection. Remember that a visible incident does not, by itself, mean Waze will route around it.
Google Maps may suit you when broader navigation context matters
Google Maps combines traffic with its wider mapping and navigation system and documents voice alerts, lane guidance and better-route notices. Its partner data and anonymous location signals can provide a different picture from Waze. Report categories and confirmation prompts depend on your country, language, platform and vehicle.
Using both can expose disagreements, not eliminate uncertainty
Comparing both apps before a time-critical trip can reveal that one has a closure, speed estimate or alternate road the other does not. A disagreement is not proof that either app is wrong: the services may be using different observations, update schedules or route constraints. Verify critical conditions with official road authorities and roadside signs.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every pin causes a detour: Waze specifically separates informative incidents from routing-affecting closures, and Google does not promise a reroute for every report.
- Treating confidence as verification: Waze’s reliability and confidence measures summarize user reactions and reporter factors; they are not an independent inspection.
- Reading feed timing as alert timing: The 15–25 minute and one-to-two-hour figures apply to partner-feed processing estimates, not every consumer notification.
- Expecting identical features everywhere: Country, language, platform and vehicle support can change what you can report or hear.
- Declaring a permanent winner: There is no cited controlled benchmark proving universal superiority, and traffic conditions vary continuously.
- Driving while editing the route: Set preferences and review alternatives before moving, then use voice guidance and pull over for any necessary interaction.
What the official documentation leaves unanswered
Neither company publishes the exact speed difference, delay duration, confidence score or number of reports required for an automatic reroute in every market. The pages also do not disclose the relative weight of historical data, current device signals, user reports and licensed partner feeds in a particular decision. Without those details, an outside reader cannot reproduce the routing engine or calculate a universal alert-to-reroute probability.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: both apps use multiple live and historical signals; both can alert you to traffic; and both can offer route updates. Waze documents a specific closure effect and a specific non-effect for ordinary incidents, while Google documents voice alerts and better-route notifications. For a route that matters to you, compare the two at the time and place you will drive, then follow physical road controls over either app.
