Waze Route Preview: How to Check Traffic Before You Leave

Waze can preview alternate routes and schedule a traffic-based leave reminder. Google Maps also offers pre-trip traffic and travel-time tools.

Waze lets you compare alternate routes before starting navigation, then schedule a future drive and get a traffic-based reminder about when to leave. Google Maps can also show traffic before a trip, including current route conditions and typical traffic by hour on Android, so the difference is in the apps’ specific planning tools—not that Maps cannot preview traffic at all.

Preview alternate routes in Waze before you start driving

To compare routes for a new destination in Waze on your phone:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Search for your destination and tap it.
  2. Tap View routes.
  3. Swipe up to see the available alternatives.
  4. Tap a route to preview it on the map.

This lets you inspect the route options before choosing one and starting navigation. Waze Help gives separate route-preview instructions for Android Auto and CarPlay; the phone steps above should not be assumed to match every in-car screen. See Waze Help: View alternate routes.

Schedule a Waze drive and get a leave reminder

A route preview is not the same as saving a planned drive. After reviewing a route, Waze on Android lets you choose Leave later, set the intended arrival day and time, and save the drive. Waze Help says, “Waze will remind you when it’s time to leave, based on real-time traffic.” The reminder is an estimate, not a guarantee that conditions will hold or that you will arrive at an exact time. Waze also says the reminder can use your location at that time if the app has GPS permission. Details are in Waze Help: Plan a drive — Android.

Google Maps also shows traffic before departure

On Android, Google Maps’ documented trip-planning flow can show current traffic along a route and typical traffic by hour. Its directions help also describes setting a departure or arrival time in supported contexts. The traffic-check steps are documented for Android, while the cited depart/arrive-time instructions are for computer directions; controls and availability can vary by platform and route.

So if your aim is to see traffic before leaving, both apps offer relevant tools. Waze explicitly documents previewing alternatives on the map and pairing route review with a saved drive and leave reminder. Google Maps documents current and typical traffic information and time-of-travel options. Those are related planning features, but not identical workflows. See Google Maps Help: Plan your commute or trip — Android and Google Maps Help: Get directions & show routes.

Check device support before relying on a planned drive

Waze’s planned-drive and calendar features have platform-specific limits. Its calendar-sync help says synchronization is unavailable on Android Auto, Android Automotive, and CarPlay. Do not assume that a reminder or calendar workflow available in the phone app will behave the same way in an in-car system. See Waze Help: Sync your calendar with Waze — Android.
