1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Waze in Android Auto is draining your phone, start by checking the phone’s Battery usage and testing Waze’s GPS directly on the phone. Those checks can help distinguish heavy power use from a GPS problem or an issue limited to the car display. There is no evidence here that switching from wireless to wired Android Auto alone fixes the drain, so treat connection mode as something to compare—not a guaranteed solution.
First find out what is using the battery
After a representative drive, open your phone’s Battery usage screen and look for which apps or features consumed power. Android lists navigation and location use, high screen brightness, background apps, and connectivity among possible battery-drain contributors. The screen can point to activity on your device; it cannot, by itself, prove that Waze or Android Auto is defective.

For a useful comparison, note whether the phone was charging, whether Android Auto was wired or wireless, whether the screen stayed on, the brightness level, and whether media played during navigation. Compare similar drives rather than drawing a conclusion from different trips. This is a practical way to gather evidence, not a Google-prescribed diagnostic test. Android’s battery guidance explains common contributors and checking Battery usage.
Check whether Waze has a GPS problem on the phone
Waze says Android Auto navigation depends on the phone’s GPS and internet connection. Disconnect from Android Auto and open Waze on the phone. If Waze reports a GPS issue there too, troubleshoot location and GPS on the phone. If Waze works on the phone but an error appears only on the car’s display, Waze directs users to contact its support. See Waze’s GPS troubleshooting instructions for Android and Android Auto.

Confirm Location and Waze permission
Make sure Location is turned on for the phone and that Waze has permission to use it. Android menu names and paths vary by device and version; Waze’s instructions include steps for Android 12 and later. Follow Waze’s Android GPS-permission guide for the relevant settings.
Run Waze’s GPS checks if the phone app has trouble
Waze’s troubleshooting flow recommends a hard reboot and a GPS test. In Waze’s guidance, a reading under 35 m (115 ft) indicates GPS is working; 0 m (0 ft) or a reading over 35 m (115 ft) indicates it is not working properly, and Waze advises contacting the phone manufacturer. These are Waze’s diagnostic thresholds, not a measurement of battery drain.

Compare wired and wireless Android Auto without assuming either is the cause
Android Auto supports both USB-wired and wireless connections. For wireless setup, Google says to keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on for best results. That setup advice does not establish that wireless mode causes a particular phone’s battery drain, or that switching to USB will eliminate it. A user post dated August 9, 2024, describes severe drain during wireless Android Auto, but it is an individual report rather than a verified diagnosis. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions cover connection options and wireless setup requirements; the community post is anecdotal.

Check the power source before buying anything
If the phone loses charge even while connected to in-car power, check whether the vehicle’s USB port or charger, cable, and phone are compatible and whether that power source can maintain charge during your use. A suitable car charger may help when the current source is inadequate, but it will not repair a GPS, software, or battery problem. The cited Android Auto setup guidance does not promise that a cable or charger will offset every phone’s power use.
Use battery restrictions cautiously
On Pixel phones, Battery settings let you inspect battery use by app and review or change an app’s background-use setting. Other Android manufacturers may use different menus; Pixel’s path is not universal. Because Waze needs location access for navigation, do not assume that restricting Waze’s background use will fix drain during an active route. Pixel’s battery-drain guidance is specific to Pixel phones.
Contact Waze with details if the issue remains
For an in-car issue, disconnect from Android Auto and submit a report through Waze’s in-app help process. Include your phone model, Android version, car or head-unit model, whether the connection was wired or wireless, what Battery usage showed, and whether GPS trouble also appeared in Waze on the phone. These details give support useful context; they do not guarantee a diagnosis.
