Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Waterproof” by itself does not tell you whether a hiking gadget can handle rain, a river crossing or a dunk. Check the exact model’s IP rating and the conditions behind it. For example, IPX7 describes a controlled, limited immersion test—not a guarantee against every kind of water exposure on a trail.
What “waterproof” and “water-resistant” mean on a gadget
These words are not enough to judge a device’s limits. Look for the exact model’s rating and manufacturer guidance: an IP code describes protection against solids and water under defined test conditions, rather than promising safety in every real-world situation. Sony’s official rating guidance notes that testing takes place in a strictly controlled laboratory environment.

An IP code has two positions. The first digit indicates protection against solid objects, including dust; the second indicates water protection. An X means that the corresponding protection level is not specified in the code. So IPX7 does not state a dust-protection rating. Garmin describes IP6X as dust-tight in its rating definitions.
What IPX4, IPX6, IPX7 and IPX8 tell you
| Rating | What the cited guidance says | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| IPX4 | Sony describes protection against splashing water. | It is not a blanket claim for every storm or exposure. |
| IPX5 | Sony describes protection against low-pressure water jets for at least three minutes. | A spray test is not an immersion test. |
| IPX6 | Sony describes protection against heavy water-jet spray for at least three minutes. Garmin’s wearable guidance says IPX6 is suitable for heavy spray and driving rain, but unsuitable for immersion. | Do not treat it as protection against a dunk. |
| IPX7 | Sony describes protection against effects of immersion up to 1 metre for 30 minutes; Garmin describes incidental exposure up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. | Those test limits do not promise survival after every fall into a river, moving-water exposure or prolonged soak. |
| IPX8 | Immersion beyond 1 metre under conditions specified by the manufacturer. | There is no single depth or duration to assume across devices. Check the model’s stated conditions. |
The IPX5 and IPX6 test descriptions above are from Sony; Garmin’s wearable examples are from its Wearable Water Ratings page. These are manufacturer descriptions, not a comparison of tested hiking products.

Is IPX7 enough for rain or an accidental dunk?
For rain and spray
IPX7 is an immersion rating, but that does not mean it is the best or only way to assess rain exposure. Garmin’s guidance for its wearables describes IPX6 as suitable for heavy spray and driving rain, while its IPX7 guidance covers rain and snow as well as incidental immersion. Follow the exact device’s instructions: Garmin’s wearable examples are specific to that product category and should not be applied to every phone, GPS or other gadget.
For a brief accidental dunk
An IPX7 rating gives a defined laboratory benchmark: up to 1 metre for 30 minutes in Sony’s description, and incidental exposure up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes in Garmin’s. It is useful information, not a guarantee that a real-world dunk will be harmless. Moving water can create greater pressure than still water at the same depth, as Polar explains for its products in its water-resistance guidance.

For longer or deeper immersion
Do not infer an IPX8 depth or duration from the rating alone. Sony says, “The exact conditions are specified for each device by the manufacturer.” Check the named model’s documentation and do not assume that a rating covers prolonged immersion unless the manufacturer explicitly says so.
How to check a hiking gadget before taking it out
- Find the exact model’s documentation. Check its manual or official product page for the complete IP code and any stated depth, duration or use limits. A product family or brand-level statement may not cover every model or regional variant.
- Match the rating to the exposure. Separate splashes and rain from immersion, and still water from moving or high-pressure water. A spray rating and an immersion rating describe different conditions.
- Check which parts are protected. Huawei says wearable water and dust resistance may apply to the watch body, not necessarily the strap or charging base. Consult the product’s own instructions for accessories and openings.
- Review age, damage and care guidance. Samsung warns that water resistance can weaken with wear and varies by model and region. Treat impact, repair and wear as reasons to consult the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than relying on the original rating indefinitely.
- Dry the gadget before charging it. Huawei advises against charging a wet wearable, and Samsung advises drying a phone after water exposure. Follow the instructions for your specific device.
See Huawei’s wearable guidance and Samsung’s water-resistance guidance for their respective products; their directions are not universal rules for every brand.

What hikers should know about handheld GPS units
Garmin’s GPS support page says most newer Garmin GPS units are IPX7. That broad statement does not establish the rating of every current model, so verify the exact navigator’s official specifications before relying on it for a wet hike. The same principle applies to other gadget categories: check the individual device, not just its brand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How wearable ATM ratings differ from IP ratings
Some watches use ATM figures rather than an IP immersion code. Garmin describes ATM as pressure equivalents and lists suitable uses for its own wearables, including swimming for some ratings. Do not convert an ATM figure directly into an IP test result or assume one manufacturer’s use guidance applies to another’s device; consult the exact model’s documentation.
