The unusual view is possible because a 360 camera records in every direction, so the shot can be reframed after recording rather than having to be aimed precisely at the moment of capture. The octopus’s motive is unknown; the footage does not prove it intended to make a selfie.
What happens in the octopus camera video?
Digital Camera World reported on October 2, 2026, that Konstantinos Mousis shared the underwater video on social media and that Insta360 later picked it up. The outlet identifies the camera as an Insta360 X5. In the footage as described by the report, an octopus holds and moves the camera while its arms appear around the snorkeler in the recorded view. Digital Camera World’s report is the attribution for the model and event; the original social post was not independently authenticated.

How does a 360 camera capture a view like this?
A conventional camera records the direction its lens is aimed. A 360 camera captures the surrounding scene, letting someone choose a direction and composition later. That means the finished frame can show the snorkeler with the octopus’s arms around the camera even though no human operator had to point the camera to compose that exact view while it was moving.
Adam Juniper, identified by Digital Camera World as its 360 camera expert, put the advantage simply: “The magic of this is that you don’t need to point the camera when you’re capturing any action.” The quote explains the camera’s flexibility; it does not establish that the octopus understood the device or deliberately composed the shot.

What to know about the Insta360 X5 underwater
Insta360 advertises the X5 as waterproof to 15 m (49 ft). That product rating is not a guarantee of clean 360 footage underwater: Insta360 warns that the difference in refraction between water and air can cause stitching issues in underwater 360 mode and recommends using its Invisible Dive Case for underwater shooting. The published video report does not say whether the camera in the clip had a dive case.
For readers considering the setup, see the Insta360 X5 product page and the manufacturer’s X5 waterproofing and care guidance. Insta360 instructs users to rinse the camera with fresh water after seawater exposure, soak it in fresh water for 5–10 minutes, then dry it with a soft cloth and let it air-dry. Wait until the camera’s surface is dry before removing its battery or other parts. These are manufacturer specifications and care instructions, not independent test results.

Has an octopus taken a camera before?
Camera-snatching octopus stories predate this video. In April 2010, CBS News reported Victor Huang’s account of an octopus taking his camera while it was recording off Wellington, New Zealand. That earlier report provides context, but it does not tell us why the octopus in the 2026 footage handled the X5. CBS News’s account is a separate anecdote, not evidence of the animal’s intent in the newer clip.
