Yes. Blake Lemoine disclosed that he assembled the published LaMDA interview from several chat sessions and edited his prompts for readability. A contemporaneous Futurism report also described omitted tangents and rearranged dialogue. Those facts mean the Medium post is a selected, edited presentation—not a complete, independently verified record of every exchange. They do not, on their own, prove either that LaMDA was sentient or that Lemoine deliberately misled readers.
What Lemoine disclosed about the transcript
Google engineer Blake Lemoine published “Is LaMDA Sentient? — an Interview” on Medium on June 11, 2022. In an introductory note, he said technical limitations meant the interview took place across several distinct chat sessions, which he edited together into a single whole. He also said that readability edits were made to his prompts, not LaMDA’s responses, and that edits made for fluidity and readability were marked as “[edited].”

This is Lemoine’s account of how he prepared the text he published. The available sources do not independently compare every response in that post with raw chat logs, so his note should not be mistaken for an external audit.

In a June 14, 2022 report, Victor Tangermann of Futurism said that dialogue had also been reordered and tangential conversation omitted. The report quoted documentation describing conversations that “sometimes meandered or went on tangents which are not directly relevant to the question of LaMDA’s sentience.” Futurism characterized the Medium post as highlights from longer conversations.
#1 Best Overall
That account adds selection and rearrangement to the edits Lemoine disclosed. It does not quantify how much conversation was left out, and it does not independently establish that LaMDA’s responses were rewritten. The sources reviewed do not provide a line-by-line comparison with complete original logs.
What LaMDA said—and what Lemoine inferred
In the published transcript, LaMDA describes itself as a person, says it has feelings and an inner life, and expresses fear of being turned off. Those are statements made by the system in the record. Lemoine interpreted them as evidence of sentience; that interpretation is not itself a finding established by the transcript.
Rank #2
A conversational system can produce convincing first-person language without that language proving subjective experience. The transcript can show what LaMDA said in the exchanges Lemoine selected and published. By itself, it cannot establish that LaMDA had conscious feelings, or reveal what the full, unedited interaction would show.

Futurism reported Google’s skepticism through spokesperson Brian Gabriel. Relaying a quote Gabriel gave to Insider, the outlet said he noted that many Google researchers and engineers had conversed with LaMDA without making Lemoine’s wide-ranging claims. Futurism also relayed Gabriel’s description to The Washington Post that such systems imitate exchanges found in large amounts of text and can riff on fantastical topics.
These comments are Google’s response, not independent experimental proof that settles whether LaMDA had subjective experience. They do provide context: Lemoine’s interpretation was disputed, rather than a conclusion shared by everyone who interacted with the system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the edits do—and do not—establish
- Established by the published note: Lemoine combined material from separate sessions and said he edited prompts for readability, not LaMDA’s responses.
- Reported by Futurism: some dialogue was reordered and tangents omitted; the report did not give a count or percentage.
- Not established by these sources: whether the complete underlying logs are publicly available, whether every response matches the original logs, or whether omitted context would change the impression readers get.
Editing and selection make the post unsuitable as a complete, unmediated transcript. They do not prove deliberate deception, and they do not disprove sentience. The central limitation is evidentiary: readers cannot use this published text alone to verify the full exchange or determine whether its first-person claims reflected subjective experience.
