Capcom considered making PRAGMATA more horror-focused, but producer Masachika Kawata said the team moved away from that idea because horror seemed too close to the company’s Resident Evil series. That makes horror an explored direction in the game’s development—not evidence that PRAGMATA began as a fully formed horror game or that its finished genre is survival horror.
What was PRAGMATA’s horror origin?
In a September 3, 2026 interview-based feature, The Ringer reported that Kawata recalled an early experiment with possible directions for the new game. He said, “At one point, there was an idea to make something a little bit more horror focused.”

Kawata explained why the team reconsidered: “Stepping back a little, this was going to be a new series, a new IP, and so horror, which seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil, didn’t seem like the most compelling use of the new title.” These are statements attributed to Kawata in The Ringer’s feature, not a separately verified transcript.

The distinction matters: the account describes one idea the team explored, not an announced horror game that was later formally converted to another genre.

Why did Capcom move away from horror?
Kawata’s stated reason was creative overlap. Since PRAGMATA was a new intellectual property, the team considered a horror direction less compelling when it seemed to share too much with Resident Evil. The report does not establish that this was the only factor behind the game’s eventual design.
What genre is the finished game?
Capcom’s public descriptions frame PRAGMATA as an action-adventure, not as survival horror. Its June 2020 announcement described a near-future dystopian world on the moon. In June 2025, Capcom called it a sci-fi action-adventure starring spacesuit-clad Hugh and android girl Diana.

That does not mean the game has no horror atmosphere. The Ringer reports that the final game retains lumbering, zombielike robots. But its combat is described as a hack-and-shoot system: Diana solves a Snake-like navigation puzzle to hack enemy defenses and expose a weak point for Hugh to attack. Horror-coded imagery is part of the mix; it does not, by itself, make the game a horror title.

How did the concept and gameplay develop?
According to lead producer Naoto Oyama in The Ringer’s feature, the 2020 reveal trailer showed a prototype. Hugh, Diana, and the moon were already part of the project, but the eventual hack-and-shoot gameplay had not yet been devised. Oyama described roughly three years of experimentation, from 2020 to 2023, followed by refinement from 2023 through the game’s 2026 release. This is Oyama’s account as reported by The Ringer, rather than a timeline independently confirmed here by official development records.

When is PRAGMATA scheduled to release?
Capcom’s public schedule changed over time: its June 2020 announcement planned a 2022 release, its June 2025 announcement listed 2026, and its December 12, 2025 announcement set April 24, 2026 and added Nintendo Switch 2 to the listed platforms. That release history provides context, but it does not establish that a schedule change caused the team to reconsider horror.
