WarchOS Architecture: An Arch-Based Custom Setup with Hyprland, the CPUAD Scheduling Daemon, and Harch .exe Manager

WarchOS is a custom Arch Linux setup described by its author. Here is how its Hyprland desktop, CPUAD daemon and Wine prefix tool work, and what is still unverified.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WarchOS is a custom Arch Linux build that its author describes in a September 2026 DEV Community article. Its design has three layers worth understanding: a Wayland desktop built on Hyprland, a Windows-program manager called Harch .exe Manager that sets up Wine prefixes, and a userspace CPU daemon named CPUAD that adjusts process priorities and CPU governor modes. The desktop pieces rest on documented upstream software. The Wine and scheduling pieces are plausible in outline, but as presented they are the author’s design claims. As of early October 2026, no public source repository, release artifact, benchmark, or independent test report for WarchOS has been identified, so its performance, compatibility, and isolation claims cannot yet be treated as established.

What the WarchOS article describes

The author presents WarchOS as a lightweight environment for development and intensive workloads, built with archiso, custom systemd units, and scripts. The table lists each named component and the independent documentation that exists for it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Layer Component named by the author Independent documentation
System build archiso No independent documentation found as of October 2026
Services and scripts Custom systemd units and scripts Described only in the author’s article
Compositor Hyprland, with SwayFX Hyprland’s official installation page states that the project officially runs and tests on Arch and NixOS
Status bar and login Waybar for monitoring; SDDM as display manager Named only in the author’s article
Windows programs Harch .exe Manager, managing Wine prefixes ArchWiki documents the WINEPREFIX variable for separate Wine environments; Harch’s own behavior is not documented
CPU control CPUAD, a daemon adjusting process priorities and governor modes Linux kernel documentation describes the scheduler classes the author names; CPUAD’s use of them is not documented

Entries that rely only on the author’s article should be read as the author’s account. The article names no test method, hardware, comparison baseline, or benchmark. Its favorable descriptions of smoothness, low resource use, and stable frame times are therefore impressions, not measurements.

The desktop layer: Hyprland is a toolkit, not a finished desktop

Hyprland is a Wayland compositor. Its official installation documentation describes it as a set of tools for building a desktop environment, and says users choose and configure their own applications and integrations. That distinction matters for WarchOS. The desktop a user sees is the sum of the author’s choices of compositor, bar, display manager, and applications, not a feature that comes with Hyprland itself.

The claim that Hyprland runs on Arch is backed by upstream: the official page says the project officially runs and tests on Arch and NixOS. That supports the compositor choice, but it does not document WarchOS’s package selection, configuration files, or session startup, and the article does not publish them. The article also does not explain how SwayFX and Hyprland relate within the session, so a reader who wants to reproduce the desktop has to reconstruct those details without help.

Harch .exe Manager and Wine prefixes

According to the article, Harch .exe Manager creates isolated Wine prefixes, resolves dependencies with Winetricks, and installs DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10, and 11 or VKD3D for Direct3D 12 when needed. Dependencies and environment configuration live under ~/runfwine/dep.

What a Wine prefix is

A Wine prefix is a directory that holds a Windows-style environment: a registry, a drive layout, and the libraries installed into it. ArchWiki documents the WINEPREFIX variable for pointing Wine at a chosen directory, which is how separate applications get separate environments. A manual prefix looks like this:

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/prefixes/app1 wine winecfg

This general feature is well established. It does not show how Harch chooses prefixes, what it installs into them, or whether it cleans up after itself.

What the article claims about isolation

The article says applications inside a prefix see a complete Windows root while the Linux host file system stays untouched. That is the author’s description, and it should not be read as a security guarantee. A prefix is a directory boundary, not a sandbox. Wine programs run with the user’s own permissions, and by default Wine maps the Linux root to drive Z:, so Windows programs can reach host paths unless the setup restricts that. The article does not describe a threat model or an isolation boundary.

Claims to verify before relying on the tool

  • Which dependencies Harch resolves, from which sources, and whether each install is recorded so it can be reversed.
  • How it chooses between DXVK and VKD3D, and which Wine and graphics translation layer versions it is tested against.
  • Whether removing a prefix also removes everything the tool wrote outside it.
  • Which Windows applications have been run in a prefix, and with what result.

The host-boundary claim can be checked roughly on your own machine with a before-and-after comparison:

  1. Create a marker file: touch /tmp/prefix-test-marker
  2. Start a fresh prefix and open its configuration tool: WINEPREFIX=$HOME/prefixes/test wine winecfg
  3. List files under your home directory changed since the marker, excluding the prefix: find "$HOME" -newer /tmp/prefix-test-marker -not -path "$HOME/prefixes/test/*"

Some results are expected. Caches and desktop-integration files may appear outside the prefix. The useful question is what changed and whether that change is documented, not whether anything changed at all.

CPUAD and Linux scheduling

The article says CPUAD adjusts process priorities and CPU governor modes according to workload, and that it “communicates directly” with three scheduler classes: stop_sched_class, fair_sched_class, and rt_sched_class. Each part of that description needs separate treatment.

What the kernel documents

The Linux kernel organizes its CPU scheduler into scheduling classes, implemented as modules that the scheduler core manages. The kernel documentation covers the fair implementation, which handles normal tasks, and the real-time implementation. The fair class is also where cgroup CPU controls take effect. The kernel’s documentation on the extensible scheduler class states:

What a userspace daemon can actually adjust

Programs outside the kernel reach the scheduler through system calls and sysfs or cgroup files, not through the scheduler classes themselves. A daemon of this kind can typically change:

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.
  • Nice values for individual processes, for example with renice. Lowering a nice value raises priority and needs root or CAP_SYS_NICE.
  • Scheduling policy and real-time priority, for example with chrt. Real-time policies need root, CAP_SYS_NICE, or an RLIMIT_RTPRIO allowance, and a real-time task that never yields can starve other work.
  • The CPU frequency governor, through files such as /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor, which normally requires root.
  • Cgroup CPU weights and limits, which the fair class enforces as the kernel quote above describes.

Where the “communicates directly” claim stands

The article’s wording implies a direct channel into the kernel’s internal scheduler classes. The kernel documentation confirms that those classes exist, but it does not describe a userspace interface that lets a daemon address them by name, and the article does not show a code path. Userspace daemons normally achieve the same effects through the calls and files listed above. A reader evaluating CPUAD should therefore ask which of those mechanisms it uses, rather than whether it talks to the stop, fair, or real-time class directly.

sched_ext is a separate mechanism

The kernel’s sched_ext framework lets BPF programs define scheduler behavior. Its documentation says the kernel falls back to fair scheduling if the BPF scheduler exits or hits an internal error. The article does not say that CPUAD uses sched_ext, and nothing reviewed indicates that it does. CPUAD as described is a userspace daemon adjusting priorities and governors, which is a different design.

What would count as evidence for the performance claims

The article describes results such as smooth performance and stable frame times, but gives no hardware, workload, baseline, or measurement method. Before a comparison with stock Arch or another desktop can be taken seriously, the following would be needed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source code or a technical design document for CPUAD and Harch .exe Manager, publicly available.
  • The kernel version, Arch package versions, and Wine and graphics layer versions used in each run.
  • The hardware specification, including CPU model, GPU and driver, and memory.
  • The named workload, such as a particular game or build job, with its settings.
  • The measurement method, such as a frame-time capture tool and its sampling window.
  • A baseline run on the same hardware with the daemon disabled, and a matching run on stock Arch.
  • Repeated runs with reported variation, rather than a single best result.

The author has asked for feedback on the prefix approach and the scheduling daemon, and the checklists above give that feedback a concrete form.
