War Dog Weapon Loadouts: Brigand, Karnivore, and Stalker by Combat Role

Choose a Chaos Knights War Dog by its intended job: ranged pressure with a Brigand, close combat with a Karnivore, or a mixed build with a Stalker. See the documented weapon options, Houndpack Lance context, and rules checks to make before building or list-making.

Choose a War Dog for the job you need it to do: the Brigand is the ranged-pressure build, the Karnivore is the melee-focused build, and the Stalker trades some specialization for a mix of ranged and melee options. None is automatically the best choice for every Chaos Knights army. Your intended targets, ability to get into position, detachment, and the rules version you are playing all matter.

This guide interprets “Wardogs” as Chaos Knights War Dogs in Warhammer 40,000. It covers their documented weapon choices and battlefield roles, not a universal competitive ranking. Exact rules and points can change, so check the current codex, datasheets, and official FAQ or errata before settling on a list.

Start with the job, not a universal “best” loadout

War Dogs are not interchangeable just because they share a chassis. The Brigand’s listed weapons and ability point toward shooting; the Karnivore’s weapons and charge-roll re-roll support a close-combat role; and the Stalker can exchange one melee weapon for a choice of ranged weapon. That gives you three different ways to contribute, rather than one build that is best in every situation.

A useful first question is what your army lacks. If you want a War Dog to apply ranged pressure, begin with the Brigand. If you want one whose main purpose is to threaten targets in close combat, consider the Karnivore. If you want to retain a melee weapon while adding a ranged option, look at the Stalker. These are role-based choices, not guarantees about damage, survival, or tournament performance.

Before choosing, picture the targets and positions you expect the model to face. A melee-focused model needs a realistic route to a suitable target; a shooting-focused model needs opportunities to see and attack useful targets. A flexible build can cover more kinds of situations, but the choice to trade a melee weapon for a ranged one is still a trade-off. The intended job should guide both the build and how you plan to use it.

Compare the three variants

Variant Role Documented weapon options Planning question
Brigand Ranged pressure Avenger chaincannon, daemonbreath spear, diabolus heavy stubber, and armoured feet Can it get useful ranged attacks against a worthwhile target?
Karnivore Close-combat focus Reaper chaintalon, slaughterclaw, and armoured feet Can it reach an appropriate target and make its melee role matter?
Stalker Mixed threat A choice to trade one melee weapon for an avenger chaincannon or daemonbreath spear Which capability are you willing to give up for the ranged option?

The table describes documented loadout distinctions, not every possible restriction or rule interaction in every edition. Confirm legal options against the datasheet and codex that apply to your game before assembling a model or submitting a list.

Brigand: build for ranged pressure

What the listed weapons do for the role

The Brigand datasheet lists an avenger chaincannon with a 24-inch range and 12 attacks, and a daemonbreath spear with a 24-inch range and two attacks, with Melta 4. It also lists a diabolus heavy stubber and armoured feet. Those profiles give the Brigand a defined ranged identity, with different weapon profiles rather than a single undifferentiated gun. The figures here are the ones in the December 2024 datasheet consulted for this guide; check your current datasheet for any later changes.

The Brigand’s ability improves the AP characteristic of its ranged attacks against the closest eligible enemy unit. That makes target selection part of the role: consider which eligible enemy is closest, whether it is a useful target for the weapons you have, and whether the model can make the attacks it needs to. The ability does not mean the Brigand must always shoot the closest unit, nor does it guarantee a particular result.

How to decide whether it fits your list

  • Choose it for the role: you want a War Dog whose documented equipment is oriented toward ranged attacks.
  • Think about target access: assess whether the table and your planned movement are likely to give it worthwhile targets within range and visibility.
  • Plan around the ability: account for the closest eligible enemy when deciding where to position the Brigand and what targets are available.
  • Do not infer a damage promise: the listed range, attack count, Melta value, and AP-related ability describe rules characteristics; they do not establish an automatic output against a particular army.

In short, the Brigand is the clearest starting point when your requirement is ranged pressure. The intended target, current weapon profiles, and position on the table still determine how useful that pressure can be.

Karnivore: commit to the melee role

Two melee weapons for different targets

Warhammer Community describes the Karnivore as a dedicated melee monster. Its listed melee choices include a reaper chaintalon, which has strike and sweep profiles, and a slaughterclaw. The distinction gives the model more than one way to approach close combat: the chaintalon’s profiles address different kinds of target, while the slaughterclaw is another melee weapon option. The datasheet also lists a charge-roll re-roll ability.

Those features support selecting a Karnivore when you want the War Dog’s main contribution to be a close-combat threat. They do not eliminate the practical requirement to get it into a position where it can use those weapons. Movement routes, intervening terrain and enemy placement, the timing of a charge, and the mission’s needs all affect whether the melee role is achievable in a given game.

When the Karnivore makes sense

  • You want a dedicated melee piece: its documented weapons and charge-related ability point toward close combat rather than a mixed shooting role.
  • You can plan for access: consider how it can move toward an appropriate target instead of assuming it will begin every turn with a charge available.
  • You need to choose a suitable target: the chaintalon’s strike and sweep profiles let you select between profiles, but the target and current rules determine which is appropriate.
  • You are evaluating the whole army: a melee specialist is most useful when its role complements the rest of your list and the objectives you need to play.

The charge-roll re-roll is a relevant part of the Karnivore’s profile, but it is not a guarantee that a charge succeeds or that the model reaches the target you want. Treat it as a rule to verify and account for, not a substitute for planning its route and target.

Stalker: keep a mixed threat, with a real trade-off

The Stalker sits between the two more specialized roles. Warhammer Community describes it as a middle ground: it can trade one of its melee weapons for an avenger chaincannon or daemonbreath spear. Its documented ranged choices therefore let you add shooting while keeping another melee weapon, rather than converting the model into the Brigand’s listed ranged configuration.

That flexibility is useful if you want a model to threaten targets at different distances or to have a ranged option without giving up all melee capability. But “mixed” does not mean “best of both worlds.” Exchanging a melee weapon changes what the Stalker can do in combat; selecting a gun does not give it the same listed loadout or role as a Brigand. Decide which weapon you are giving up and what capability you expect to gain before choosing the build.

Questions to ask before building a Stalker

  • Do you specifically want both ranged and melee capability in one War Dog?
  • Which of the documented ranged options, chaincannon or daemonbreath spear, better suits the targets and role you have in mind?
  • Are you comfortable trading one melee weapon for that ranged option?
  • Would a more specialized Brigand or Karnivore do the required job more clearly in this army?

The available trade-off makes the Stalker adaptable as a concept, but it does not establish that it will outperform a specialist or cover every situation equally well. Confirm the current datasheet’s exact options before treating an older description as a build instruction.

Choose by battlefield need

If you need… Start with… Why What to check
Ranged pressure Brigand Its listed chaincannon and daemonbreath spear profiles, plus an ability that improves ranged AP against the closest eligible enemy, support this job. Current profiles, target eligibility, range, and whether the model can attack a useful target.
A close-combat threat Karnivore The chaintalon’s strike and sweep profiles, slaughterclaw, and charge-roll re-roll support a melee-focused role. Whether it can reach a suitable target and how the current rules affect the charge and attacks.
A mixture of ranged and melee capability Stalker It can trade one melee weapon for a chaincannon or daemonbreath spear. Which melee capability is surrendered and whether the mixed role is more useful than a specialist.

This is a decision aid, not a tier list. The official descriptions support distinctions between roles and options; they do not establish current competitive win rates, a universally strongest build, or which variant belongs in a specific army list. Those judgments need a defined list, rules version, and game context.

What Houndpack Lance changes

Houndpack Lance is a detachment announced as being built around War Dogs. The 2025 Warhammer Community announcement describes a requirement of three or more War Dog units, gives War Dog units the Battleline keyword, and allows the player to select three units to gain Character. Its Marked Prey rule selects an enemy unit at the start of the Command phase; War Dog attacks against that selected unit gain Sustained Hits 1 when it is visible to the attacking model.

That outline is relevant if you are building an army around War Dogs, but it does not by itself make one variant the right choice. A target-dependent rule and a visibility condition make positioning and target selection part of the detachment’s use. The Brigand, Karnivore, and Stalker still have distinct weapon roles; assess which mix serves your plan rather than treating the detachment as a blanket endorsement of a single build.

Because these details come from a 2025 announcement, verify the current printed or digital codex and official errata before relying on the exact unit requirement, keywords, selection timing, or attack effect. Detachment wording and army-building rules are the kind of details where an older article may no longer be sufficient for a current game.

Build planning and rules checks

Check the rules before committing to a configuration

  1. Identify the rules version: establish which codex, datasheets, FAQ or errata, and points document your group or event uses.
  2. Confirm the variant’s legal options: read the current datasheet for the Brigand, Karnivore, or Stalker rather than assuming a previously documented option remains unchanged.
  3. Match the model to its job: choose ranged pressure, melee focus, or a mixed threat based on what the army needs, not simply on which profile looks strongest in isolation.
  4. Check the detachment interaction: if you are using Houndpack Lance, confirm its current unit-count requirement and rules text in the codex and errata.
  5. Verify points separately: consult the points document current for your game date. Do not use an older total as if it were current.

For physical assembly, official Warhammer Community material describes a Houndpack Lance battleforce containing seven plastic War Dogs with parts to build them as Stalkers, Karnivores, or Brigands. That establishes a documented kit option, not current stock, price, or the exact contents of every shop listing. If you are buying a Chaos Knights War Dog kit or another listing, confirm that it includes the parts needed for the build you want. If you already own a kit, check its instructions and available components before deciding which weapon configuration to assemble.

Points and how to handle dated values

A March 2025 Munitorum Field Manual listed the War Dog Brigand at 165 points and the Karnivore and Stalker at 140 points each. Those are historical values from that manual, not a claim about current points. Do not use them to compare today’s list-building efficiency unless you have confirmed that the applicable current points document still gives the same values.

Even when points are unchanged, points alone cannot answer which loadout is best. The relevant comparison includes the job each model performs, the targets it can engage, whether it can get into position, how the detachment applies, and what else your army needs. A difference in points is meaningful only alongside the rules version and list context in which it is being considered.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Picking by a headline claim: role descriptions are not evidence of a universal best build or competitive ranking.
  • Ignoring access to targets: a melee-focused configuration depends on reaching a suitable target; a ranged build depends on being able to make useful attacks.
  • Reading the Brigand ability too broadly: it improves ranged AP against the closest eligible enemy; it does not force every attack onto that unit or guarantee damage.
  • Calling the Stalker a no-compromise hybrid: its ranged option is gained by trading one melee weapon, so decide whether that exchange suits the intended role.
  • Using old rules or points as current: the datasheet material consulted is labelled December 2024, the points manual is from March 2025, and Houndpack Lance was described in 2025. Check current official documents for the game you are playing.
