The iOS 18 developer beta and public beta served different audiences: developers could test and build apps, while public testers could try pre-release software and provide feedback. Apple announced the developer beta on June 10, 2024, and said the public beta would follow the next month. The programs may provide different beta software, so don’t assume their builds or features are always identical—or that the public beta is guaranteed to be more stable.
Developer beta vs. public beta
| Comparison | Developer beta | Public beta |
|---|---|---|
| Intended audience | Developers testing and building apps for upcoming Apple platforms. | Users who want to try pre-release software and provide feedback about quality and usability. |
| iOS 18 launch timing | Apple announced availability through the Apple Developer Program on June 10, 2024. | Apple said it would follow the next month through the Apple Beta Software Program. |
| Access | On iOS 16.4 or later, select the developer beta in Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates. The iPhone must use the Apple Account used to sign in to the Apple Developer website. | Enroll in Apple’s Beta Software Program with a valid Apple Account and accept its agreement. Apple says the program and public beta software are free. |
| Builds and features | Apple says participants in the two programs may receive different beta software. Check the version and release notes for the specific build rather than assuming the tracks match. | |
Apple’s materials do not establish a build-by-build comparison for iOS 18. The public program is intended for a broader group of testers, but that does not prove every public build is a more stable version of its developer counterpart.

Which beta should you choose?
Choose the developer beta if you
- Need to test app compatibility or build apps for upcoming Apple platforms.
- Want access through the Apple Developer Program and can meet its Apple Account requirement.
- Can handle pre-release software issues and consult release notes for known issues, fixes, workarounds, and API changes.
Choose the public beta if you
- Want to preview iOS and provide feedback about its quality and usability.
- Prefer to enroll through Apple’s free Beta Software Program rather than test as a developer.
- Understand that it is still pre-release software and may not match developer beta builds.
What to know before installing
Apple warns that beta software may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software. Apple recommends installing it on a non-production device, backing up first, and reading the release notes for the exact build.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Back up your iPhone with iCloud or a computer before installing. Apple describes a pre-beta backup as the route to restore a prior released iOS version.
- Use a device that is not critical for work or other essential tasks, if possible.
- Read the release notes for the build you plan to install. They can list known issues, workarounds, fixes, and other changes.
- Check compatibility and feature availability. Apple announced iOS 18 for iPhone XS and later, and noted that some features vary by device, region, and language.
Apple’s June 2024 announcement specified iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPad and Mac with M1 or later, for the Apple Intelligence beta, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English. Those were the announcement’s conditions, not a guarantee that every later iOS 18 beta included every announced feature.

What changes did Apple announce for iOS 18?
Apple highlighted more Home Screen and Control Center customization, a redesigned Photos app, new Mail inbox categories, Messages via satellite, and Apple Intelligence. Availability varied by device, region, and language, so these announcements should not be read as a promise that a particular beta build or every device included every feature.
Is the iOS 18 public beta the same as the developer beta?
Not necessarily. Apple says participants in the two programs may receive different beta software, and the official material reviewed does not settle whether each public iOS 18 build exactly matched a developer build. Check the installed version and its release notes.
